The pathology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an old enemy of the human race, with evidence of infection observed as early as 5000 years ago. Although more host-restricted than Mycobacterium bovis, which can infect all warm-blooded vertebrates, M. tuberculosis can infect, and cause morbidity and mortality in, several veterinary species as well. As M. tuberculosis is one of the earliest described bacterial pathogens, the literature describing this organism is vast and overwhelming. This review strives to distill what is currently known about this bacterium and the disease it causes for the veterinary pathologi

Molecular pathology of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.

Pancreatic endocrine tumors (PETs) are rare neoplasms which account for 1% to 2% of all pancreatic malignancies. The diagnostic, grading and prognostic criteria for PETs have been controversial in surgical pathology and clinical medicine. The newly updated 2010 WHO classification introduced in clinical practice will give more insight into genetic and molecular changes related to PET subtypes. These neoplasms can be graded into 1 of 3 tiers, based on histologic characteristics in likeness to epithelial neuroendocrine tumors in other anatomic sites. Most PETs are sporadic, however, some of them,…

Tissue physiology and pathology of aromatase.

Aromatase is expressed in multiple tissues, indicating a crucial role for locally produced oestrogens in the differentiation, regulation and normal function of several organs and processes. This review is an overview of the role of aromatase in different tissues under normal physiological conditions and its contribution to the development of some oestrogen-related pathologies.

Soft tissue pathology around the hip.

Snapping hip syndromes have been treated with open surgery for many years. Recently, endoscopic techniques have been developed for treatment of snapping hip syndromes with results that are at least comparable if not better than those reported for open procedures. The greater trochanteric pain syndrome is well known by orthopedic surgeons. However, deep understanding of the pathologic conditions generating pain in the greater trochanteric region and endoscopic access to it has only recently been described. Although evidence regarding endoscopic techniques for the treatment of the greater trocha

Lung vasculitis and alveolar hemorrhage: pathology.

Pulmonary vasculitides are a diverse group of limited and systemic disorders associated with inflammation of pulmonary vessels and parenchyma. These diseases often have distinctive clinical, serological, and histopathological features-extrapulmonary sites of involvement, circulating autoantibodies, predispositions for small or large vessels, and others. Some have characteristic inflammatory lesions; others are characterized by the absence of such lesions. Frequently pathological findings overlap, rendering classification, and diagnosis a challenge. The anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANC

The Chernobyl thyroid cancer experience: pathology.

The Chernobyl accident was followed by a large increase in the incidence of thyroid carcinoma in the areas exposed to high levels of fallout. The Chernobyl Tumor Bank was set up in 1998 to make tumours available for study internationally, and a pathology panel reviewed all the tumours and established an agreed diagnosis. The thyroid tumours that were discovered after the Chernobyl nuclear accident were virtually all (95%) of the papillary carcinoma type. Rare examples of other tumour types were identified. Within the papillary group, several subtypes were noted, including classical or usual ty…

The liver is a special lymphoid organ with its own defense mechanism and it is prone to chronic viral and autoimmune diseases. All constitue … atitis is a paradigm of immune-mediated liver injury and has a special, but not pathognomonic, histopathology. The main effector lymphocytes belong to the CD8 population, which are antigen-specific; however, the mechanisms seem to be suppressed by regulatory T cells.

Perspectives on margins in DCIS: pathology.

All breast carcinomas must originate within the ductal/lobular system as carcinoma in situ, but only a subset of these lesions progress to invasive carcinoma. Although pathologic evaluation of the extent of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), the distance to margins, and the degree of margin involvement provides an estimation of the likelihood of residual disease, the amount of disease in the remaining breast cannot be predicted with certainty. Factors other than residual disease may be more important in determining whether patients with DCIS survive or succumb to breast cancer, including biologi

[Pancreatic cancer. Molecular and surgical pathology].

The incidence of ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas shows a slight upward trend, while the prognosis for patients with pancreatic cancer remains poor. Little progress has been made in early diagnosis due to accompanying chronic pancreatitis and the histopathologically well known "desmoplastic stroma reaction". The cancer originates in the ductal epithelium, while the cell of origin is the "centroacinar" cell. Up to 20% of patients with pancreatic cancer have a family history of the disease. In about 10%, a hereditary tumor syndrome could be identified. At initial diagnosis, only 20% of pati

Molecular pathology in forensic medicine--Introduction.

Techniques of molecular biology have improved diagnostic sensitivity, accuracy and validity in forensic medicine very much, especially in the field of identification (paternity testing, stain analysis). Since more than 10 years these techniques - meanwhile well established in clinical disciplines - are used also for other applications in forensic medicine: determination of cause and manner of death, tissue identification by mRNA and microRNA, examination of gene expression levels (survival time, time since death, cause of death), toxicogenetics.

Scleroderma renal crisis: a pathology perspective.

Scleroderma renal crisis (SRC) is an infrequent but serious complication of systemic sclerosis (SSc). It is associated with increased vascular permeability, activation of coagulation cascade, and renin secretion, which may lead to the acute renal failure typically associated with accelerated hypertension. The histologic picture of SRC is that of a thrombotic microangiopathy process with prominent small vessel involvement manifesting as myxoid intimal changes, thrombi, onion skin lesions, and/or fibrointimal sclerosis. Renal biopsies play an important role in confirming the clinical diagnosis,

The pathology of bone marrow failure.

An important indication for bone marrow investigation is the presence of bone marrow failure, which manifests itself as (pan)cytopenia. The causes of cytopenia are varied and differ considerably between childhood and adulthood. In the paediatric age group inherited bone marrow failure syndromes are important causes of bone marrow failure, but they play only a minor role in later life. This review gives a comprehensive overview of bone marrow failure disorders in children and adults. We classified the causes of bone marrow failure according to the main presenting haematological abnormality, i.e

Pathology of inhalational anthrax animal models.

Anthrax is a lethal disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. There are three principal forms of the disease in humans-cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and inhalational-depending on the route of exposure. Of these, inhalational anthrax is the most dangerous; it is rapidly fatal; and it has been used as a deadly biological warfare agent in the last decade. Suitable animal models of inhalational anthrax have been utilized to study pathogenesis of disease, investigate bacterial characteristics such as virulence, and test effectiveness of vaccines and therapeutics. To date, mice, guinea pigs

[CT dacryocystography: normal findings and pathology].

CT dacryocystography, performed under sterile technique and following local anesthesia, is well tolerated by patients. It is the imaging technique of choice in patients with persistent tearing following clinical examination with non-invasive procedures when patency of the lacrimal drainage system remains uncertain, when a dacryolith or tumor is suspected or following unsuccessful dacryocystorhinostomy. Two techniques are available: instillation or direct cannulation, either initially or after non-visualization of the nasolacrimal system after contrast instillation. Non-specific idiopathic sten

Reverse referral: from pathology to endocrinology.

Establishing a diagnosis of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) especially in children, adolescents, and young adults can be challenging because of phenotypic heterogeneity even among family members. We report an adolescent girl diagnosed to have MEN1 following presentation with multiple collagenomas. Histological evaluation of her cutaneous lesions revealed >70 collagenomas. Hormonal evaluation included calcium, phosphate, and parathormone measurements. Exons 2-10 of the MEN1 gene and flanking intron-exon borders were sequenced and revealed a novel nonsense mutation, Y222X. Following t
