Peer victimization, rumination, and problem solving as risk contributors to adolescents' depressive symptoms.

The author examined the integration of 2 studies of literature on the development of depressive symptoms in adolescents, addressing ruminative coping styles and peer victimization. In particular, the author tested whether increasing levels of victimization and rumination along with perceived problem solving skills in Turkish adolescents are predictive of depressive symptoms. Participants were 250 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 years. The author conducted hierarchical multiple regression analyses to examine the joint and separate predictive power of problem solving, rumination, and v

A distant mirror: memories of parents and friends across childhood and adolescence.

Memories that were easily accessible (i.e., quickly retrieved in a memory-fluency task) of Italian university students were assessed. They were from four periods of life: preschool, elementary school, middle school, and high school/university. Half of the participants were instructed to recall only memories involving parents, and the other half memories involving friends. Across age at the time of remembered events, only memories of friends increased in frequency. For parental memories (but not friend memories), the proportion with negative affect increased over age, especially for males. Ther

Adolescent peer relations, friendships, and romantic relationships: do they predict social anxiety and depression?

This study examined multiple levels of adolescents' interpersonal functioning, including general peer relations (peer crowd affiliations, peer victimization), and qualities of best friendships and romantic relationships as predictors of symptoms of depression and social anxiety. An ethnically diverse sample of 421 adolescents (57% girls; 14 to 19 years) completed measures of peer crowd affiliation, peer victimization, and qualities of best friendships and romantic relationships. Peer crowd affiliations (high and low status), positive qualities in best friendships, and the presence of a dating

When the course of aggressive behavior in childhood does not predict antisocial outcomes in adolescence and young adulthood: an examination of potential explanatory variables.

Theoretical models and empirical studies suggest that there are a number of distinct pathways of aggressive behavior development in childhood that place youth at risk for antisocial outcomes in adolescence and young adulthood. The prediction of later antisocial behavior based on these early pathways, although substantial, is not perfect. The goal of the present study was to identify factors that explain why some boys on a high-risk developmental trajectory in middle childhood do not experience an untoward outcome, and, conversely, why some boys progressing on a low-risk trajectory do become in

Social support interventions: do they work?

Presence of support has repeatedly been linked to good long-term health outcomes based on demonstrations of better immune function, lower blood pressures, and reduced mortality (among others). Despite a massive literature on the benefits of support, there is surprisingly little hard evidence about how, and how well, social support interventions work. Using a computerized search strategy, 100 studies that evaluated the efficacy of such interventions were located. The presenting problems ranged from cancer, loneliness, weight loss, and substance abuse to lack in parenting skills, surgery, and bi

[Psychosocial development and problems in early adulthood: developmental psychological characterization of an important segment of the life cycle].

Young adulthood represents a genuine developmental phase in the life cycle. In its transitional position it shares many traits with the developmental process in youth and adulthood. Among its central developmental problems are: establishing a secure personal identity, forming mature friendships and mature intimate relationships, reorientation of family ties, building up a core of ideological values, selecting a long-term vocation, finding one's bearings, looking to the future. The perspective of "normative crisis" vs "continuous transformation" is discussed. Ths significance of the patterns of

Instrumental and hostile aggression in childhood disruptive behavior disorders.

An analogue task of instrumental and hostile aggression during a competitive game was evaluated in a sample of clinically-referred 8- to 12-year-old aggressive boys. Similar to a prior task in a normative sample (Hoving, Wallace, & La Forme, 1979), both types of aggression increased during provocation as compared to baseline, indicating the success of the provocation manipulation, with moderate correlations between the two aggressive responses. The aggressive group with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the aggressive group without ADHD each had higher rates of instrumental a

Perceived self-esteem among children diagnosed with precocious puberty.

Self-esteem is known to be altered in children with chronic illness. Do accelerated normal changes, such as those that occur in children with precocious puberty, also alter the child's self-esteem? Twenty-eight children with precocious puberty participated in a nonrandomized descriptive pilot study using a structured interview, the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale, and self-portrait drawings. Results indicate that the overall self-esteem of the majority of children was within normal limits as measured by the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale, but closer analysis found that m

The overconfidence effect in social prediction.

In five studies with overlapping designs and intents, subjects predicted a specific peer's responses to a variety of stimulus situations, each of which offered a pair of mutually exclusive and exhaustive response alternatives. Each prediction was accompanied by a subjective probability estimate reflecting the subjects' confidence in its accuracy--a measure validated in Study 5 by having subjects choose whether to "gamble" on the accuracy of their prediction or on the outcome of a simple aleatory event. Our primary finding was that in social prediction, as in other judgmental domains, subjects

An Innovation to Expand the Reach of Peer Support: A Feasibility and Acceptability Study.

INTRODUCTION: Peer support is a well-established part of veteran care and a cost-effective way to support individuals pursuing health behavior change. Common models of peer support, peer coaching, and mutual peer support have limitations that could be minimized by building on the strengths of each to increase the overall reach and effectiveness. We conducted a 12-week, proof-of-concept study to test the acceptability and feasibility of a hybrid model of peer support which supplements dyadic mutual peer support with as-needed peer coaching. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We tested our novel peer suppo

The Association between Prosocial Behaviour and Peer Relationships with Comorbid Externalizing Disorders and Quality of Life in Treatment-Naïve Children and Adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Several recent studies confirmed that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has a negative influence on peer relationship and quality of life in children. The aim of the current study is to investigate the association between prosocial behaviour, peer relationships and quality of life in treatment naïve ADHD samples. The samples included 79 children with ADHD (64 boys and 15 girls, mean age = 10.24 years, SD = 2.51) and 54 healthy control children (30 boys and 23 girls, mean age = 9.66 years, SD = 1.73). A study of the effect of peer-led instruction on the improvement of swimming skills of university students.

BACKGROUND: Peer-led instruction has been increasingly adopted in physical education; however, empirical evidence regarding its effectiveness in improving specific aquatic motor skills remains limited, particularly in university swimming education. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study examined the effects of peer-led versus traditional teacher-centred instruction on university students' 25-m breaststroke kicking performance over a 12-week intervention. A total of 80 s-year university students (19.6 ± 0.8 years; 40 males and 40 females) were included in the final analysis and allocated to ei

Barriers and Facilitators of Smoking Cessation Among People Receiving Treatment for Mental Health Disorders: Perspectives of Healthcare Providers.

People experiencing mental illness smoke tobacco at disproportionately higher rates than the general population. Staff at mental health services are well placed to assist clients with smoking cessation, yet such support is often limited by time or knowledge constraints. Guided by the COM-B model, this study explored barriers and facilitators of smoking cessation among people receiving treatment for mental health disorders as perceived by staff members of community mental health services in Brisbane, Australia. Three focus groups were conducted in August-October 2021 with 29 healthcare professi

Peer Support and Mentorship in a US Rare Disease Community: Findings from the Cystinosis in Emerging Adulthood Study.

PURPOSE: Medical advances have transformed the rare disease cystinosis from fatal in childhood to chronic and manageable into adulthood. Disease-specific advocacy groups and interaction via the Internet create opportunities for peer support, part of the changing experience and outcomes of the illness. METHODS: This study utilized a qualitative grounded theory approach to explore the experience of emerging adults and adults with cystinosis, and their parents. Individuals (n = 49) from 21 families were recruited online and in person for focus groups and/or individual interviews. RESULTS: Indiv

School climate for transgender youth: a mixed method investigation of student experiences and school responses.

Transgender youth experience negative school environments and may not benefit directly from interventions defined to support Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual (LGB) youth. This study utilized a multi-method approach to consider the issues that transgender students encounter in school environments. Using data from two studies, survey data (total n = 2260, 68 transgender youth) from study 1 and focus groups (n = 35) from study 2, we examine transgender youth's experience of school harassment, school strategies implemented to reduce harassment, the protective role of supportive school personnel, and indi

Neural representations of popularity and leadership status relate to conformity in daily life.

Individuals are motivated to increase their social status. To succeed in this pursuit, people must track information about others in their social sphere, monitor group norms, and adjust their behavior strategically. This study employed functional MRI and ecological momentary assessment methods in a sample of 92 college students belonging to 9 social groups to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying these processes and their relationship to conformity in the context of alcohol use. When young adults passively looked at faces of their real-life social group peers, brain systems implicated in
