The Marks-Sheehan anxiety scales are the only scales where self-ratings and observer ratings are perfectly matched by the number, the content and the scaling of the items. Therefore these scales are an excellent tool to investigate the compatibility and to study different structures in self- and observer ratings. This was done by using the data material on the Marks-Sheehan scales of the Cross National Collaborative Panic Study. In this study 1168 outpatients who met the DSM-III criteria for panic disorder were randomly allocated either to alprazolam, imipramine or placebo treatment. Our resul

The definition of empathy is controversial. Here one aspect of it, namely perception of others' feelings and personality, was investigated. Empathy was assessed by comparing self-rating with rating by other persons. Group psychotherapy patients were used. Nineteen patients with a history of schizophrenic psychosis and 20 neurotics were found to have lower empathy than 20 patients with borderline personality disorders whose empathy was as high as the descriptively used scores of four psychotherapists. Empathy was not found to be dependent on similarity of personalities. It correlated negatively

Inhibitory control, the ability to suppress or countermand an action or thought, is notably impaired in patients with bipolar disorder. However, the specific characteristics of this impairment and whether deficits can manifest prior to a formal bipolar disorder diagnosis or among individuals with subsyndromal symptoms are relatively unknown. Here we test whether healthy individuals exhibiting a higher level of hypomanic personality traits respond more rapidly, albeit with weaker inhibitory control. We evaluated 83 native French speakers using the Hypomanic Personality Scale (HPS) and administe

Antagonistic narcissism (AN), involving devaluation, aggression, and impulsivity, is a key feature of narcissism and overlaps with borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study compared explicit (self-reported) and implicit (indirectly measured) AN in women with BPD and a matched clinical control (CC) group and examined associations with aggression, interpersonal problems, and emotion dysregulation. Fifty-one women with BPD and 51 CC participants completed the AN Implicit Association Test (AN-IAT), the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire (NARQ), and clinical assessments. Grou

The authors tested whether emerging borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms mediated the association between childhood physical abuse (CPA) and aggression among incarcerated girls. Participants were 121 incarcerated adolescent girls (13-19 years old). Three forms of aggression (relational, overt, and violent offending behavior) and exposure to CPA by a parental figure were assessed using self-report inventories, whereas BPD symptoms were evaluated using a structured interview. Mediation models, including tests of indirect effects, were conducted in which each form of aggression was pred

BACKGROUND: Digital phenotyping uses passively collected smartphone-sensing data to characterize everyday behavior in naturalistic settings, and has become an important approach for studying mental well-being. Most previous studies have examined associations between individual sensing variables and mental health. However, mental well-being is likely reflected not by isolated behaviors but by combinations of co-occurring daily behaviors that together form lifestyles. Person-centered approaches capable of identifying these behavioral configurations may, therefore, provide more interpretable digi

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Impulsivity is an aspect of personality and a major component of multiple neuropsychiatric conditions. In Parkinson's disease, it has been associated with the expression of impulse control disorders, a highly prevalent non-motor complication. Even though multiple tests of impulsivity have been used in this context, the impact of test choice has not been addressed. The aim was to evaluate whether different impulsivity measures in Parkinson's disease share substantial inter-scale and anatomical correlations or rather mirror different underlying phenomena.
METHODS: In a c

The Life History of Aggression (LHA) assessment was administered to up to 252 subjects. In addition to a total LHA score, subscale scores for Aggression, Social Consequences and Antisocial Behavior, and Self-directed Aggression were calculated. Test-retest stability, interrater agreement, and internal consistency reliability were excellent both for the LHA Total score and the LHA Aggression subscore. There were moderately strong correlations between these scores and both self-reports of aggressive tendency (Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory: n = 214) and recent overt aggression (Overt Aggression

BACKGROUND: Whether psychological factors such as anxiety and pain catastrophizing levels influence the expression of endogenous analgesia in general and, more specifically, the conditioned pain modulation (CPM) response is still under debate. It may be assumed that other psychological characteristics also play a role in the CPM response. The neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine are involved both in CPM, as well as personality traits such as harm avoidance (HA), novelty seeking (NS), and reward dependence (RD), which can be obtained by the Tridimensional Personality Questi

In an era of streaming saturation, understanding why individuals repeatedly engage in prolonged viewing and how such behavior relates to well-being has become increasingly important. This study examines the associations among Dark Tetrad personality traits (Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy, and sadism), binge-watching behavior, and digital fatigue, and tests whether social identity formation moderates these relationships. Using survey data from 402 participants (Mage = 26.3 years; 51% female), we employed structural equation modeling with robust estimation and 5000-sample bootstrapped

Patients with Wilson's disease, an autosomal recessive disorder caused by ATP7B mutations, present with hepatic and neurological symptoms, including tremors, chorea, personality changes, and rare manifestations such as neuropathy, autonomic dysfunction, headache, and epilepsy. This report describes the case of a 14-year-old man born to consanguineous parents who presented with focal seizures and oromandibular dystonia. A neurological exam revealed left upper limb hypotonia. An electroencephalogram showed right hemisphere epileptiform activity, and magnetic resonance imaging indicated bilateral

This study addresses the challenge of differentiating between bipolar disorder II (BD II) and borderline personality disorder (BPD), which is complicated by overlapping symptoms. To overcome this, a multimodal machine learning approach was employed, incorporating both electroencephalography (EEG) patterns and cognitive abnormalities for enhanced classification. Data were collected from 45 participants, including 20 with BD II and 25 with BPD. Analysis involved utilizing EEG signals and cognitive tests, specifically the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and Integrated Cognitive Assessment. The k-near

Hashimoto's encephalopathy (HE), also known as steroid-responsive encephalopathy, is associated with autoimmune-mediated thyroiditis. Onset is typically gradual often with evolution over the course of months. Characteristic symptoms include impaired concentration and memory, delusions, hallucinations, personality changes, incoordination, tremor, hemiparesis, seizures, and speech difficulties. Diagnosis is predicated upon discovery of elevated anti-thyroid antibodies, specifically anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPO) or anti-M antibodies. Some patients may also present with subclinical hypothyroidism

Fahr's syndrome is a rare neurological entity, primarily impacting basal ganglia with bilateral intracranial calcium deposition. It mainly manifests motor and psychiatric symptoms in affected individuals. After the patient and her family members' consent and proper ethical clearance from the institutional ethical committee, we here report a case presented with a few motor symptoms, features of delirium, and prominent psychiatric symptoms such as disorganized behavior, auditory hallucinations, and delusions. The imaging study found bilateral basal ganglia calcification and edema in the parietal

Recently, research has provided support for a moderate, inverse relationship between social anxiety and dispositional positive affect. However, the dynamics of this relationship remain poorly understood. The present study evaluates whether certain personality traits and emotion regulation variables predict short-term positive affect for individuals with social anxiety disorder and healthy controls. Positive affect as measured by two self-report instruments was assessed before and after two tasks in which the participant conversed with either a friend or a romantic partner. Tests of models exam

This research tests the applicability of the Integrated Pathways Model for gambling to adolescent problem gamblers, utilizing a cross-sectional design and self-report questionnaires. Although the overall sample consisted of 1,133 adolescents (Quebec: n = 994, 87.7 %; Ontario: n = 139, 12.3 %: Male = 558, 49.5 %; Female = 569, 50.5 %), only problem gamblers were retained in testing the model (N = 109). Personality and clinical features were assessed using the Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory, attention deficit hyperactivity (ADHD) using the Conners-Wells' Adolescent Self-Report Scale, and t

BACKGROUND: Dialectic behaviour therapy (DBT) has been widely used with individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder who exhibit severe emotional and behavioural dysregulation. There is a paucity of research in assessing the effectiveness of DBT with forensic clients with intellectual disability (ID).
METHODS: This pilot study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the DBT group skills training programme adapted particularly for offenders with ID. Six participants completed the 13-week adapted DBT group skills training programme. All participants exhibited challenging behaviours

The authors give an overview of the present state of knowledge on the genetics of anxiety disorders. According to ICD-10 or DSM III/IV classification, anxiety disorders comprise panic disorder, generalized anxiety, phobias, and post-traumatic stress disorder. In the context of the conceptual change from psychodynamic anxiety neuroses to complex, multifactorial anxiety disorders, a summary of biological hypotheses of the pathogenesis of anxiety derived from pharmacotherapy, challenge tests, and animal model disorders is provided. The relevant findings from clinical genetic studies (twin and fam

Mobbing represents nowadays a major challenge for Occupational Medicine. We examined, during the last seven years, 253 patients who asked medical assistance for psychopathological problems by them ascribed to mobbing in the working environment. All patients underwent occupational health visit, psychological counselling (including personality tests administration), and psychiatric evaluation. A clinical picture probably due to mobbing was diagnosed in 37 workers: 2 cases of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), 33 of Adjustment Disorder (AD), and 2 of anxiety disorder. Regarding mobbing typolo…
