BACKGROUND: The conventional surgical procedures for managing abdominal hydatids, including those of the liver, have a very high morbidity rate in terms of hospital stay and wound complications. Less invasive procedures may thus be logical alternatives.
METHOD: We enrolled 58 patients in the study. Using guided ultrasound aspiration followed by instillation of 15% saline, we were able to manage 16 patients as outpatients. Cryptosporidium is an obligate enteric protozoan parasite commonly associated with severe symptoms such as profound diarrhea and dehydration in the immunocompromised, particularly those living with HIV/AIDS. In the immunocompetent, Cryptosporidiosis is self-limited, and characterized by mild non-bloody diarrhea with associated nausea and vomiting. We present an unusual case of presumed Cryptosporidium colitis, in an immunocompetent host, characterized by anorexia and pneumoperitoneum.

A case of pneumoretroperitoneum which came out to be caused by pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis, after careful and proper diagnostic evaluation, is described. Physiopathology, etiopathogenesis and clinical peculiarities of this infrequent pathology are examined; most useful tests to be performed in diagnostic differential evaluation, and clinical and surgical therapeutic approaches are also described, especially facing rare complications of PCI, such as pneumoperitoneum and pneumoretroperitoneum.

Although subdiaphragmatic gas on an erect chest or abdominal radiograph usually indicates the presence of a gastrointestinal perforation, this sign is present in only 60-80% of cases. Other less well known radiographic signs of perforation that may nonetheless be of utmost importance in diagnosis are described. The presence of such signs may then prompt further diagnostic procedures or surgical intervention as appropriate.

We report an unusual presentation of annular pancreas with pneumoperitoneum in a newborn with an associated left sided Erb's palsy. The neurological deficit caused considerable confusion in the diagnosis and unexpected complications after surgery. We highlight the importance of clinical examination and the complications that an Erb's palsy can cause. This unusual triad of Erb's palsy, eventration of diaphragm and annular pancreas has hitherto not been described in literature.

We report a case of a three days old male newborn who suffered several apnea crisis. Radiologic studies revealed a pneumoperitoneum. Laparotomy proved it was caused by two intestinal perforations in the ascending colon. Histologic study showed a concomitant suppurated acute appendicitis. We discuss the case features, its possible etiopathogeny and the most frequent clinical aspects and treatment of intestinal perforation at this age.
