Emergency management of hyperkalemia in dogs and cats - Part 1: Pathophysiology and etiology.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperkalemia is a frequent, life-threatening emergency in dogs and cats. It disrupts neuromuscular function and cardiac conductio … acidosis, extensive tissue injury); increased intake or iatrogenic load when excretion is limited (potassium chloride in IV fluids, older stored blood, drugs that reduce aldosterone effect or distal sodium delivery); and pseudohyperkalemia due to sample factors (hemolysis, marked thrombocytosis or leukocytosis, anticoagulant contamination). CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL …

Inherited ion channel disorders.

UNLABELLED: The inherited ion channel disorders (channelopathies) are a group of disorders caused by mutations in genes encoding ion channels. Ion channel disorders can affect any tissue, but the majority affect skeletal muscle or the central nervous system. These disorders include skeletal muscle sodium channelopathies causing hyperkalaemic periodic paralysis, paramyotonia congenita and potassium-aggravated myotonia. Skeletal muscle calcium channelopathies can cause hypokalaemic periodic paralysis, malignant hyperthermia and central core disease. Skeletal muscle chloride channelopathies can c

Effects of replacement partial sodium chloride on characteristic flavor substances of bacon during storage based on GC×GC-MS and non-targeted metabolomics analyses.

Comprehensive 2D gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC × GC-MS) and non-targeted metabolomics were employed to investigate the difference … torage significantly impact its overall quality. By partially substituting sodium chloride with 22% potassium chloride and 11% calcium ascorbate, coupled with appropriate storage conditions, the quality of bacon can be improved.

Regulatory volume increase after hypertonicity- or vasoactive-intestinal-peptide-induced cell-volume decrease in small-intestinal crypts is dependent on Na(+)-K(+)-2Cl- cotransport.

The volume of intact crypts isolated from guinea-pig small intestine has been measured to assess the capacity of the cells to regulate their volume after hypertonic shock or vasoactive-intestinal-peptide (VIP)-induced shrinkage. Crypts exposed to anisotonic medium initially behave as perfect osmometers. Continued exposure to a hypertonic (400 mosmol/l) medium was followed by regulatory volume increase (RVI), which led to complete volume recovery in about 20 min. VIP produced a volume reduction, attributed to KCl loss through channels activated by the secretagogue, without any recovery during e

Chloride efflux is involved in ET-1 and 5-HT-induced contraction in rabbit basilar artery.

Chloride (Cl-) efflux induces depolarization and contributes to contraction of cerebral arteries. We tested the effect of endothelin-1 and 5-hydroxytryptamine on isometric tension in rabbit basilar artery by inhibition of Na+-K+-2Cl- co-transporter and Cl-/HCO3- exchanger to decrease Cl-, by decreasing extracellular Cl- concentration, and by blocking Cl- channels using Cl- channel inhibitors. We have made the following observations: (i)endothelin-1 and 5-hydroxytryptamine produced contraction in the normal Cl- Krebs-Henseleit bicarbonate solution (123 mM Cl-); (ii)inhibition of Na+-K+-2Cl- co-

Cell volume regulation during hyperosmotic shrinkage is mediated by Na+/K+-ATPase and Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporter in Necturus gastrics surface epithelial cells.

Cell volume regulation was investigated in gastric surface epithelial cells during hypertonic conditions. Isolated Necturus antral mucosa was perfused on the serosal side with Ringer's solution (pH 7.25, 95%O2/5%CO2) and on the mucosal side successively with 150-500 mM NaCl. Amiloride, ouabain, and bumetanide were used to experimentally inhibit Na+/H+, Na+/K+ ATPase or Na+-K+-2Cl- ion transporters. Intracellular sodium activity and cell volume changes were measured with liquid sensor microelectrodes. The increase in intracellular sodium activity caused by luminal hyperosmolar exposure was main

Importance of Recognizing Renal Tubular Disorders as a Cause of Bone Hypomineralization and Fractures in Adults.

Renal tubular disorders are often overlooked causes of acquired or inherited bone hypomineralization and fragility fractures in adults. The proximal tubule reabsorbs glucose, phosphate, low-molecular-weight proteins, amino acids, bicarbonate, and much of the sodium, potassium, chloride, and calcium. The distal nephron-the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, the distal convoluted tubule, and the collecting duct-regulates urine concentration and dilution, maintains acid-base balance via urinary proton secretion, and controls electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calciu

Severe Hypokalemia and Metabolic Alkalosis Caused by Licorice Discovered During the Treatment of Intraoperative Hypoxemia.

One of the causes of preoperative hypokalemia is the prolonged use of herbal medicines, especially licorice. Licorice can induce pseudo-aldo … ic alkalosis. The symptoms improved after the discontinuation of herbal medicines and administering potassium chloride. It is necessary to suspect electrolyte abnormalities as one of the causes of hypoxemia, hypertension, or ECG abnormalities in patients prescribed herbal medicines. Therefore, it is also important to ensure that patients on such drugs have their blo …

A simple and rapid approach to hypokalemic paralysis.

Hypokalemia with paralysis (HP) is a potentially reversible medical emergency. It is primarily the result of either hypokalemic periodic par … lic alkalosis or metabolic acidosis favors non-HPP. The therapy of HPP requires only small doses of potassium chloride (KCl) to avoid rebound hyperkalemia. In contrast, higher doses of KCl should be administered to replete the large K(+) deficiency in non-HPP.

[Gitelman syndrome. An overlooked disease with chronic hypomagnesemia and hypokalemia in adults].

Gitelmans syndrome represents the clinical manifestations of inactivating mutations in the gene encoding for the thiazide sensitive sodium chloride cotransporter in the distal convoluted tubule. Thus, the biochemical characteristics resemble those seen with thiazide diuretics: hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, hypocalcuria, metabolic alkalosis and blood pressure in the low normal range. Until the genetic background was clarified in 1996, Gitelman's syndrome was often mistaken for Bartter's syndrome, which is now attributed to defects in the ion transportation system in the thick ascending limb of H

Biochemical changes in the sublingual and submandibular glands after interruption of chorda tympani.

The left chorda tympani nerve was interrupted through meatus acusticus externus in ten dogs. In total, 40 dog salivary glands (20 submandibular and 20 sublingual) innervated via chorda tympani were examined. Twenty glands (10 submandibular and 10 sublingual) on the left side were deprived of parasympathetic innervation by chordectomy, whereas contraleteral glands, on the right side, served as controls. Biochemical analysis showed that the interruption of chorda tympani did not cause any significant changes in the concentrations of eight enzymes investigated, i.e. lactate dehydrogenase, alkalin

An approach to the study of intracellular proteins related to the excitability of the squid giant axon.

The technique for covalently labeling proteins with 125I-labelled Bolton-Hunter reagent was used to determine the quantities of proteins rel … s found that proteins of approx. 56 000 daltons were released into the perfusate when a solution of potassium chloride or potassium bromide was introduced into the interior of an axon. Suppression of axonal excitability was associated with this release of proteins. The significance of these findings in relation to the structure and function of the axon is discussed.

[The value of alkalizing treatments in severe diabetic keto-acidosis].

In 37 diabetic patients with severe acidosis (pH less than 7.0; [HCO3-] less than 5.0 mMol/l), administration of insulin was preceded by a r … rum potassium. In most cases hypokalemia develops, but can be easily corrected by administration of potassium chloride. Normalization of arterial pH by bicarbonate infusion is not recommended in view of the development of late hypernatremia and metabolic alkalosis.

Laying hens respond differently to high dietary levels of phosphorus in monobasic and dibasic calcium phosphate.

A series of experiments were conducted to determine the relative acidogenicities of dietary chloride, phosphorus, and sulfate and their effects on shell quality. Calcium salts of these anions were added to a corn-soybean meal diet to provide supplemental levels of 150 to 450 meq/kg diet chloride, 150 to 600 meq/kg diet monobasic phosphate, 150 to 1,200 meq/kg diet dibasic phosphate, and 150 to 1,200 meq/kg diet sulfate. The results indicated that laying hens can safely tolerate up to 200 meq/kg diet supplemental chloride (.95% total chloride in the diet) and up to 450 to 600 meq/kg diet supple

Thermal decomposition and isomerization of cis-permethrin and beta-cypermethrin in the solid phase.

The stability to heart of cis-permethrin and beta-cypermethrin in the solid phase was studied and the decomposition products identified. Samples heated at 210 degrees C in an oven in the dark showed that, in the absence of potassium chlorate (the salt present in smoke-generating formulations of these pyrethroids), cis-permethrin was not isomerized, although in the presence of that salt, decomposition was greater and thermal isomerization occurred. Other salts of the type KXO3 or NaXO3, with X being halogen or nitrogen, also led to a considerable thermal isomerization. Heating the insecticides
