Diagnosis and Treatment Guided by 3D Imaging and Modeling: A W-shaped Interventricular Septal Phenotype in Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy.

Surgical treatment of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy is challenging. It requires balancing adequate myocardial excision against the risk of excessive resection, which can result in an iatrogenic ventricular septal defect. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a high-risk septal myectomy in complex anatomy W-shaped hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy with a deep interventricular septum crypt and apical aneurysm. CT angiography-based three-dimensional modeling of the interventricular septum and a virtual myectomy enabled detailed preoperative planning and successful s

A novel vision-based system for quantitative analysis of abdominal aortic aneurysm deformation.

BACKGROUND: In clinical diagnostics, combination of different imaging techniques is applied to assess spatial configuration of the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and deformation of its wall. As deformation of aneurysm wall is crucial parameter in assessing wall rupture, we aimed to develop and validate a Non-Invasive Vision-Based System (NIVBS) for the analysis of 3D elastic artificial abdominal aortic models. 3D-printed elastic AAA models from four patients were applied for the reconstruction of real hemodynamic. During experiments, the inlet boundary conditions included the injection volume

From Patient to Procedure: The Process of Creating a Custom 3D-Printed Medical Device for Foot and Ankle Pathology.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has advanced greatly over the past decade and is being used extensively throughout the field of medicine. Several orthopaedic surgery specialties have demonstrated that 3D printing technology can improve patient care and physician education. Foot and ankle pathology can be complex as the 3D anatomy can be challenging to appreciate. Deformity can occur in several planes simultaneously and bone defects either from previous surgery or trauma can further complicate surgical correction. Three-dimensional printing technology provides an avenue to tackle the

Advanced dental surgeries using fused filament fabrication and stereolithography printing: Case reports.

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of digital imaging can now be combined with additive three-dimensional (3D) printing, changing traditional clinical dentistry, especially in challenging cases. Visualizing the bone and soft tissue anatomy using computed tomography (CT) and intraoral scanning generated digital files that can be further processed for 3D printing. Among the popular 3D printing approaches, fused filament fabrication (FFF) and stereolithography (SLA) are broadly used due to their rapid production, precision, and ease of use. METHODS: The current case series outlines three challenging

3D printing of intracranial artery stenosis based on the source images of magnetic resonance angiograph.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Three dimensional (3D) printing techniques for brain diseases have not been widely studied. We attempted to 'print' the segments of intracranial arteries based on magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS: Three dimensional magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) was performed on two patients with middle cerebral artery (MCA) stenosis. Using scale-adaptive vascular modeling, 3D vascular models were constructed from the MRA source images. The magnified (ten times) regions of interest (ROI) of the stenotic segments were selected and fabricated by a 3D printer with a resolution of

A case study on occupational exposure assessment and characterization of particles in a printing shop in China.

Printers can release numerous particles to contaminate indoor environments and pose health risks. Clarifying the exposure level and physicochemical properties of printer-emitted particles (PEPs) will help to evaluate the health risks of printer operator. In our study, the particles concentration in the printing shop was monitored in real time for a long time (12 h/day, total 6 days), and the PEPs were collected to characterize their physicochemical properties including shape, size and compositions. The result showed that the concentration of PEPs is closely related to the printing workload and

Bioprinting of Hydrogel Tumor Slices as a 3D Model for Mantle Cell Lymphoma.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell neoplasm that frequently relapses and only shows a limited response to conventional chemotherapy. A major challenge in MCL research is culturing primary MCL cells ex vivo, as cells tend to undergo spontaneous apoptosis when cultured in 2D suspension culture. Although 3D models are known to better recapitulate the in vivo situation of solid tumors, their application is still poorly explored in lymphomas. Developing 3D models that replicate the in vivo conditions of MCL within the lymph node could enhance their survival, facilitate the stud

A foldable small-scale soft electromagnetic robot for multimodal navigation in confined and unstructured environments.

Multimodal locomotion is crucial for an animal's adaptability in unstructured wild environments. Analogously, in the human gastrointestinal tract, characterized by viscoelastic mucus, complex rugae, and narrow openings like the cardia, multimodal locomotion is also essential for a small-scale soft robot to conduct tasks. Here, we introduce a small-scale, compact, foldable, and robust soft electromagnetic robot with more than nine locomotion modes designed for such a scenario. Featuring a six-spoke elastomer body embedded with liquid metal channels and driven by Laplace forces under a static ma

Rapid on-site quantification of total polar materials in edible oils via a polarity-triggered fluorescent probe and smart 3D-printed sensing platform.

Edible oil is a crucial component of human dietary nutrition, and its safety directly impacts public health. Total polar materials (TPM) are a key indicator of oil degradation. However, restaurants and food processing facilities often lack the tools to quickly and accurately assess TPM levels, hindering effective oil management to reduce costs while ensuring oil quality and safety. In this study, we designed and synthesized a merocyanine-based probe, which is driven by microenvironmental polarity to exhibit a fluorescence "turn-on" response. The TPM content can be evaluated by the ratio of red
