Lumbar position sense acuity during an electrical shock stressor.

BACKGROUND: Optimal motor control of the spine depends on proprioceptive input as a prerequisite for co-ordination and the stability of the spine. Muscle spindles are known to play an important role in proprioception. Animal experiments suggest that an increase in sympathetic outflow can depress muscle spindle sensitivity. As the muscle spindle may be influenced by sympathetic modulation, we hypothesized that a state of high sympathetic activity as during mental stress would affect the proprioceptive output from the muscle spindles in the back muscles leading to alterations in proprioception a…

Multiple vibrissae sensory regions in rat cerebellum: a (14C) 2-deoxyglucose study.

Repetitive tactile sensory stimulation of the right mystacial vibrissae (whiskers) was performed in awake, adult rats. Regions of increased (14C) 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) uptake were mapped autoradiographically in cerebellum. Predominantly ipsilateral activation of multiple discrete granule cell regions occurred in paramedian lobule, crus 2, crus 1, lobulus simplex, and anterior lobe hemisphere. Bilateral and contralateral activation of cerebellum did occur. Multiple small patches, as well as large granule cell regions, were activated. Mossy fiber afferents from the spinal trigeminal nuclei (parti

Spinal interneuronal populations encode static hindlimb posture in the cat.

Proprioceptive signals from primary afferents often correlate with single-joint states (but can also reflect multi-joint configuration), whereas neuronal populations in the cerebral cortex represent limb endpoint postures. Where and how this transformation emerges along the somatosensory axis from peripheral proprioceptive receptors remains unclear. We simultaneously recorded lumbosacral spinal neurons in two decerebrate, immobilized cats while a robotic device held the hindlimb at 16 static endpoint positions spanning hip-knee configurations. Using high-density multielectrode recordings, we a

Inherited Sensory and Autonomic Neuropathy in a Border Collie, Interest of Oclacitinib for the Control of Self-Mutilation.

Sensory and autonomic neuropathy was diagnosed in a five-month-old Border Collie puppy, who presented with progressive self-mutilation, proprioceptive ataxia and urinary incontinence. In the Border Collie, sensory neuropathy is different from what is observed in acral mutilation syndrome, as the genetic mutation is linked to an inversion disrupting the FAM134B gene. Diagnosis was based on history, clinical signs and genetic testing. The prognosis of sensory neuropathies is poor and no curative treatment is available. In the present case, oclacitinib was started for symptomatic treatment of the

The ataxic neuropathies.

Ataxia is a frequent symptom in neurological cases with many causes. Sensory ataxia (due to involvement of the proprioceptive pathways) is observed in conditions affecting the central nervous system (spinal cord disorder) and the peripheral nervous system (peripheral neuropathy). The latter correspond to what we refer to as 'ataxic neuropathies'. Ataxic neuropathies represent a wide and heterogeneous spectrum of disorders that may affect dorsal root nerves, dorsal root ganglia, nerve trunks, distal nerve endings or all of them together. The identification of a predominant sensory ataxia in a c

Does Compression Sensory Axonopathy in the Proximal Tibia Contribute to Noncontact Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury in a Causative Way?-A New Theory for the Injury Mechanism.

Anterior cruciate ligament injury occurs when the ligament fibers are stretched, partially torn, or completely torn. The authors propose a n … crush axonopathy of the proprioceptive sensory neurons in the proximal tibia. As a result, impaired proprioception could lead to injury of the anterior cruciate ligament as a secondary damage, which is suggested to occur during the deceleration phase. Elevated prostaglandin E2, nitric oxide and glutamate may have a critical neuro-modulatory role in the damage si …

Knee joint laxity and neuromuscular characteristics of male and female soccer and basketball players.

Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are occurring at a higher rate in female athletes compared with their male counterparts. Research in the area of anterior cruciate ligament injury has increasingly focused on the role of joint proprioception and muscle activity in promoting knee joint stability. We measured knee joint laxity, joint kinesthesia, lower extremity balance, the amount of time required to generate peak torque of the knee flexor and extensor musculature, and electromyographically assessed muscle activity in 34 healthy, collegiate-level athletes (average age, 19.6 +/- 1.5 years) who…

The cervico-ocular reflex changes following treatment in individuals with subclinical neck pain: a randomized control trial.

Individuals with subclinical neck pain (SCNP) exhibit altered cerebellar processing, likely due to disordered sensorimotor integration of inaccurate proprioceptive input. This association between proprioceptive feedback and SMI has been captured in cervico-ocular reflex (COR) differences where SCNP showed higher gain than healthy participants. Previous neurophysiological research demonstrated improved cerebellar processing in SCNP participants following a single treatment session, but it is unknown whether these neurophysiological changes transfer to cerebellar function. In a parallel group, r

Postural control in episodic ataxia type 2: no evidence for increased vestibular excitability.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with episodic ataxia type 2 (EA2) suffer from recurrent paroxysmal episodes of vertigo and oscillopsia. Pathophysiologically, altered neuronal excitability has been suspected. Vestibular excitability in 22 EA2 patients and 22 age-matched healthy participants was compared. METHODS: Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) was used to assess vestibular excitability by vestibular motion perception thresholds and mean postural sway velocity during various visual and proprioceptive conditions in the two groups. Control stimuli using sham and no GVS were established to

Skin Stretch Enhances Illusory Movement in Persons with Lower-Limb Amputation.

Performance of lower limb prostheses is related not only to the mechanical design and the control scheme, but also to the feedback provided to the user. Proprioceptive feedback, which is the sense of position and movement of one's body parts, can improve the utility as well as facilitate the embodiment of the prosthetic device. Recent studies have shown that proprioceptive kinesthetic (movement) sense can be elicited when non-invasively vibrating a muscle tendon proximal to the targeted joint. However, consistency and quality of the elicited sensation depend on several parameters and muscle te

Removing own-limb visual input using mixed reality (MR) produces a "telescoping" illusion in healthy individuals.

The purpose of the present study was to assess changes in body perception when visual feedback was removed from the hand and arm with the purpose of resembling the visual deprivation arising from amputation. The illusion was created by removing the visual feedback from the participants' own left forearm using a mixed reality (MR) and green screen environment. Thirty healthy persons (15 female) participated in the study. Each subject experienced two MR conditions, one with and one without visual feedback from the left hand, and a baseline condition with normal vision of the limb (no MR). Body p

Directional communication during movement execution interferes with tremor in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Both the cerebello-thalamo-cortical circuit and the basal ganglia/cortical motor loop have been postulated to be generators of tremor in PD. The recent suggestion that the basal ganglia trigger tremor episodes and the cerebello-thalamo-cortical circuitry modulates tremor amplitude combines both competing hypotheses. However, the role of the STN in tremor generation and the impact of proprioceptive feedback on tremor suppression during voluntary movements have not been considered in this model yet. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of the STN and prop

Probing the Human Spinal Locomotor Circuits by Phasic Step-Induced Feedback and by Tonic Electrical and Pharmacological Neuromodulation.

The mammalian lumbar spinal cord experimentally isolated from supraspinal and afferent feedback input remains capable of expressing some basic locomotor function when appropriately stimulated. This ability has been attributed to spinal neural circuits referred to as central pattern generators (CPGs). In individuals with a severe spinal cord injury, rhythmic activity in paralyzed leg muscles can be generated by phasic proprioceptive feedback during therapist- or robotic-assisted stepping on a motorized treadmill. Here, we critically review to what extent the resulting motor output represents lo
