Recognition and Stigma of Gambling Disorder in Singapore.

Gambling Disorder (GD) is a highly stigmatised condition with serious psychological, social and financial consequences. Limited public recognition regarding GD may hinder help-seeking, shape beliefs about recovery and reinforce stigma. This study seeks to establish the extent of recognition of GD as well as stigma towards it in Singapore's population using a vignette-based approach. Data from 595 participants from a nationwide vignette-based study on mental health literacy were analysed using weighted analysis and multivariable logistic and linear regression to address the aims. Participants r

Neuroticism modulates the qualitative effects of inferior parietal tDCS on negatively-valenced memories.

For individuals with increased levels of neuroticism, experiencing criticism or receiving negative feedback has been associated with worse psychological and cognitive outcomes. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can change cognitive processes in clinical populations. We bilaterally stimulated the posterior inferior parietal lobule (pIPL), a critical superficial node of the default model network. We investigated how baseline neuroticism modulates the impact of bilateral tDCS to pIPL on qualitative measures of memory after hearing criticism, hypothesizing that cathodal stimulation of

Disruption to well-being activities and depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic: The mediational role of social connectedness and rumination.

BACKGROUND: Disruption to everyday routine during the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in considerable implications for global mental health. The inter- and intra-personal mechanisms by which disrupted routine can contribute to elevated depressive symptoms has not been well-explored. The present study aimed to examine how feelings of social (dis)connectedness and rumination, as a maladaptive coping strategy, could explain the association between disrupted well-being activities and depressive symptoms. METHODS: Participants (N = 496) ranging in age from 18 to 73 years (M = 28.73, SD = 10.93) com

Inequalities in mental health, self-rated health, and social support among sexual minority young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: analyses from the UK Millennium Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Young adults who self-identify as a sexual minority may have been particularly harmed by the consequences of lockdown, closure of educational institutions, and social distancing measures as they are likely to have been confined in households that may not be supportive of their sexual orientation. We examine inequalities in the mental health and self-rated health of sexual minority young adults, compared to their heterosexual peers, at the height of lockdown restrictions in the UK. METHODS: We analysed data from singletons who participated in waves 6, 7, and the wave 1 COVID-19 survey

How to Make the Ghosts in my Bedroom Disappear? Focused-Attention Meditation Combined with Muscle Relaxation (MR Therapy)-A Direct Treatment Intervention for Sleep Paralysis.

Sleep paralysis (SP) is a common state of involuntary immobility occurring at sleep onset or offset. It can include terrifying hypnogogic or hypnopompic hallucinations of menacing bedroom intruders. Unsurprisingly, the experience is associated with great fear and horror worldwide. To date, there exist no direct treatment intervention for SP. In this article, I propose for the first time a type of focused inward-attention meditation combined with muscle relaxation as a direct intervention to be applied during the attack, to ameliorate and possibly eliminate it (what could be called, meditation-

Causes and consequences of pedestrian injuries in children.

UNLABELLED: Pedestrian-car collisions are in motorised countries one of the leading causes of unintentional-injury-related death and morbidity among children. The objective of this study was to assess correlations between the mode and the severity or post-traumatic sequels of the injury. A 12-year (1989-2001) retrospective study of children aged 0-16 years injured in pedestrian-motor-vehicle collisions was undertaken. An anonymous survey with questionnaires completed by families was conducted. In this time period, 501 children (average age: 7.9 years) were injured. The lack of visibility of th

This study investigates how social crowding (e.g., overcrowded environments) influences individuals' preferences for different modes of shar … s their preference for sharing with strangers (i.e., sharing-out). This relationship is mediated by psychological distance. Furthermore, resource mindset (scarcity vs. abundance) moderates this effect. Specifically, under a scarcity mindset, social crowding strengthens preferences for sharing-in, whereas under an abundance mindset, it promotes preferences for sharing-ou …

A Confirmatory Factory Analysis of the Exercise Sensitivity Questionnaire (ESQ).

PURPOSE: The Exercise Sensitivity Questionnaire (ESQ) is a self-report measure used to assess the extent to which different physical sensations of exercise elicit anxiety (ie, exercise sensitivity). The ESQ was developed for individuals with cardiovascular conditions and initially validated in a non-clinical sample. This study evaluates the factor structure and measurement invariance in a clinical sample of adults with various cardiovascular conditions. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study with retrospective chart review. Patients (N = 265; 73% male, mean age 67.8 ± 10.5 years) were atte

Heterogeneity of patients with functional/dissociative seizures: Three multidimensional profiles.

OBJECTIVE: Current concepts highlight the neurological and psychological heterogeneity of functional/dissociative seizures (FDS). However, it remains uncertain whether it is possible to distinguish between a limited number of subtypes of FDS disorders. We aimed to identify profiles of distinct FDS subtypes by cluster analysis of a multidimensional dataset without any a priori hypothesis. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory, prospective multicenter study of 169 patients with FDS. We collected biographical, trauma (childhood and adulthood traumatic experiences), semiological (seizure character
