Association of obesity and menarche SNPs and interaction with environmental factors on precocious puberty.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is an important cause for the precocious or early puberty. However, the association between obesity-related loci and the risk of precocious puberty as well as the effect of gene-environment interaction are unclear, especially in the Chinese children population. METHODS: This was a case-control study using baseline data from two cohorts and hospital cases in China. 15 SNPs loci and several environmental factors were included in the analysis of 1201 participants. Chi-square test and logistic regression were used to analyze the association between SNPs and precocious puberty.

Kisspeptin and DLK1 levels for monitoring treatment of girls with central precocious puberty.

BACKGROUND: Kisspeptin and delta-like 1 homolog (DLK1) are neuropeptides that reportedly play an important role in pubertal timing by activating and inhibiting the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, respectively. Consequently, serum kisspeptin and DLK1 levels may be novel biomarkers for differentiating between central precocious puberty (CPP) and premature thelarche (PT) in girls and used to monitor CPP treatment. PURPOSE: To compare baseline serum kisspeptin and DLK1 levels in girls with CPP at diagnosis and after treatment to age-matched girls with PT. METHODS: This prospective longitudi

Serum phoenixin levels in girls with central precocious puberty and premature thelarche.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Phoenixin (PNX), a newly discovered neuropeptide associated with reproduction, has been speculated to be involved in precocious puberty. Therefore, we assessed serum PNX levels in girls with precocious puberty. METHODS: Serum phoenixin-14 (PNX-14) and phoenixin-20 (PNX-20) levels were determined in girls with central precocious puberty (CPP) and premature thelarche (PT) and in healthy controls (n = 58 per group). Spearman's correlation was used to analyze the correlations between variables. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate the performance of P

Altered degree centrality and functional connectivity in girls with central precocious puberty.

Girls who suffer from central precocious puberty (CPP) are at risk of experiencing detrimental psychological and behavioural consequences, along with impaired brain development. However, the mechanism by which puberty hormones affect patients with CPP remains unclear. This study aimed to use degree centrality (DC) analysis to explore the impact of premature activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis on brain functional development in girls with CPP. In this cross-sectional study, thirty-four girls (mean ± SD, 7.89 ± 0.81 years) with CPP and 25 age-matched girls without CPP (me

Assessment of Quality of Life and Behavioral Problems in Children with Central Precocious Puberty.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to estimate the impact of central precocious puberty (CPP) on psychosocial aspects in the cohort of children and to assess whether these aspects changed after treatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogues. METHODS: A case-control study enrolled 30 CPP children and 30 normal controls. The CPP group was assessed with emphasis on anthropometric measurements (Tanner staging for pubertal changes). The hormonal profile included gonadotropins, estradiol or testosterone, and GnRH stimulation test. The instruments used for neuropsychological assessment included t

Long-term exposure to air pollution and precocious puberty in South Korea.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The increasing prevalence of precocious puberty (PP) has emerged as a significant medical and social problem worldwide. However, research on the relationship between long-term air pollution exposure and PP has been relatively limited. We thus investigated the association between long-term air pollution exposure and the onset of PP in South Korea. METHODS: We investigated a retrospective cohort using the Korea National Health Insurance Database. Six-year-old children born from 2007 to 2009 were examined (2013-2015). We included boys ≤10 years and girls aged ≤9 years who vis

Adult height in girls with idiopathic central precocious puberty treated with triptorelin.

OBJECTIVE: Idiopathic central precocious puberty (CPP) precipitates epiphyseal fusion of growth plates in long bones, leading to reduced adult stature. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues (GnRHa) are the treatment of choice for idiopathic CPP, but their benefit on height gain is unclear. We aimed to elucidate the effects of GnRHa treatment on adult height in girls with idiopathic CPP. DESIGN: This prospective observational descriptive study analyzed data of girls with idiopathic CPP diagnosed at 55 centers in Spain between January 1, 1998 and December 31, 2012 included in the Spanish Soc

Precocious Puberty as a Unique Presentation of Hepatoblastoma in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report.

Hepatoblastoma is a rare pediatric cancer. Hepatoblastoma typically presents asymptomatically with an enlarging abdominal mass but can be associated with paraneoplastic secretion of beta-gonadotropin leading it to present like peripheral precocious puberty. This case highlights a rare initial presentation of hepatoblastoma as precocious puberty in a two-year-old patient who presented with persistent abdominal and genital pain. The patient was treated with right hepatic lobectomy and subsequently two cycles of cisplatin and was considered to be in remission without concern for recurrent disease

Clinical significance of serum MBD3 detection in girls with central precocious puberty.

Diagnosis of central precocious puberty (CPP) in girls remains a huge challenge. The current study was to measure the serum expression of methyl-DNA bind protein 3 (MBD3) in CPP girls and assess its diagnostic efficacy. To begin with, we enrolled 109 CPP girls and 74 healthy pre-puberty girls. Then, MBD3 expression in their serum samples was measured via reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and its diagnostic efficacy on CPP was assessed via the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, followed by correlation analysis between serum MBD3 and patient age, gender, b

Alterations in Appetite-Regulating Hormones in Girls with Central Early or Precocious Puberty.

The prevalence of central precocious puberty (CPP) in girls has increased worldwide and is often associated with obesity in childhood as well as high fat/high glycemic index diets. Evidence suggests that subjects with obesity present with alterations in appetite-regulating hormones. The arcuate and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus are the centers of action of appetite hormones, as well as the location of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons, the activation of which results in the onset of puberty. This anatomical proximity raises the question of possible alterations in appet

A Rare Case of Precocious Puberty Secondary to an LH-secreting Pituitary Adenoma.

An 8-year, 7-month-old male presented with puberty symptoms, including a 1.5-year history of facial hair with 9 months of phallic growth, body odor, and acne. Physical examination revealed phallic enlargement but only 4 mL testes bilaterally. Laboratory evaluation revealed markedly elevated LH and testosterone, but a prepubertal FSH level and minimally elevated adrenal androgens. A magnetic resonance imaging scan of the head revealed an anterior pituitary adenoma, and after the patient failed to respond to leuprolide, he was initiated on spironolactone and anastrozole to minimize pubertal prog

Use of the Subcutaneous Triptorelin Stimulation Test for Diagnosis of Central Precocious Puberty.

BACKGROUND: The gold standard gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation test uses the response to intravenously injected gonadorelin to diagnose central precocious puberty (CPP). However, gonadorelin is not always readily available. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the diagnostic efficacy of the subcutaneous triptorelin test and the optimal blood sampling time for diagnosis of CPP. METHODS: This study retrospectively examined the medical records of 220 girls who had undergone either the triptorelin or gonadorelin test and compared their clinical characteristics. We retrospectively

Aberrant Notch Signaling Pathway as a Potential Mechanism of Central Precocious Puberty.

The Notch signaling pathway is highly conserved during evolution. It has been well documented that Notch signaling regulates cell proliferation, migration, and death in the nervous, cardiac, and endocrine systems. The Notch pathway is relatively simple, but its activity is regulated by numerous complex mechanisms. Ligands bind to Notch receptors, inducing their activation and cleavage. Various post-translational processes regulate Notch signaling by affecting the synthesis, secretion, activation, and degradation of Notch pathway-related proteins. Through such post-translational regulatory proc
