During 1990 and 1991, nosocomial transmission of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) was documented in four hospitals in New York and Florida. Subsequently, additional MDR-TB outbreaks have been investigated by CDC. This report summarizes preliminary results of an investigation of transmission of MDR-TB in a correctional facility in New York.

Short course chemotherapy with 2SHRZ/7HR of 9 months duration was given in 41 proven cases of female genital tuberculosis. Thirty-two (78%) patients completed 9 months of therapy. Twenty-five (61%) were pronounced cured. Short course chemotherapy appears to be quite effective in patients of genital tract tuberculosis.

The problem of genito-urinary tuberculosis particularly for developing countries is stressed. The clinical presentation is outlined and investigations discussed, special mention being made of the importance of the high dose intravenous pyelogram and the limited use of retrograde pyelogram, cystography and arteriography. Intussusception is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in children, with a peak in children 5 to 7 months of age. Identifiable causes are found in 90% of adults, whereas in infants and young children the majority are idiopathic. We report a case of abdominal tuberculosis (ATB) presenting as an ileocolic intussusception in an infant. A 6-month-old infant presented with features of acute intestinal obstruction. Peroperatively, ileocolic intussusception was found. Histological examination revealed caseating epitheloid cell granulomas with positivity for acid-fast bacilli. Only 3 cases

We describe a patient with a presumed intramedullary tuberculoma treated only with antituberculous therapy. MRI showed a ring-enhancing annular lesion in the thoracic spinal cord with a distant syringomyelic cavity, which improved after therapy. MRI in this case allowed us not only to achieve a presumptive diagnosis but also to assess the therapeutic response, making surgical exploration unnecessary.

Since 1970 short course regimes of chemotherapy have been adopted for the treatment of 87 patients suffering from genitourinary tuberculosis. The response to chemotherapy, the effect of surgery, the importance of hypertension and the relapse rate have been studied. It is concluded that all cases of genitourinary tuberculosis will respond to a short intensive course of chemotherapy, which need not be given for longer than 6 months.

BACKGROUND: In response to increasing primary resistance to isoniazid, the Brazilian Ministry of Health modified the tuberculosis (TB) treatment regimen at the end of 2009.
