Entopallium Lost GFAP Immunoreactivity during Avian Evolution: Is GFAP a "Condition Sine Qua Non"?

INTRODUCTION: The present study demonstrates that in the same brain area the astroglia can express GFAP (the main cytoskeletal protein of astroglia) in some species but not in the others of the same vertebrate class. It contrasts the former opinions that the distribution of GFAP found in a species is characteristic of the entire class. The present study investigated birds in different phylogenetic positions: duck (Cairina moschata domestica), chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus), and quails (Coturnix japonica and Excalfactoria chinensis) of Galloanserae; pigeon (Columba livia domestica) of a gro

Salmonella Typhi-specific multifunctional CD8+ T cells play a dominant role in protection from typhoid fever in humans.

BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever, caused by the human-restricted organism Salmonella Typhi (S. Typhi), is a major public health problem worldwide. Development of novel vaccines remains imperative, but is hampered by an incomplete understanding of the immune responses that correlate with protection. METHODS: Recently, a controlled human infection model was re-established in which volunteers received ~10(3) cfu wild-type S. Typhi (Quailes strain) orally. Twenty-one volunteers were evaluated for their cell-mediated immune (CMI) responses. Ex vivo PBMC isolated before and up to 1 year after challenge we

Minor retinal degeneration in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder with selective and progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra. Studies on Parkinson's disease patients and dopamine-depleted animals indicate that dopaminergic neurons in the retina degenerate due to the genetic and environmental factors that cause dopaminergic neuron loss in the substantia nigra. Besides motor and non-motor symptoms, visual symptoms are common in Parkinson's disease patients, ranging from complaints of reading and driving difficulties, to complex visual hallucinations. The delicate network of various neuron

The specificity of Centruroides sculpturatus Ewing (Arizona lethal scorpion) hemolymph agglutinins.

C. sculpturatus sera agglutinate human erythrocytes independently of the ABO blood group, enzyme treatment, incubation temperature or sex of the scorpions. Tested with human lymphocytes and reptile and bird erythrocytes, C. sculpturatus serum reacts like an anti-sialic acid agglutinin. With leukemic lymphocytes, titers are higher than with normal lymphocytes. Mammalian erythrocytes show characteristic agglutination patterns for C. sculpturatus for Limulus polyphemus (horseshoe crab) that suggest different receptors for agglutinins of both species. Cross absorption and elution experiments indic

APUD cells, apudomas and the neural crest.

The most characteristic feature of the APUD cell series is the ability to take up and decarboxylate amine precursors. Other features, regarded as characteristic by Pearse, are the secretion of polypeptide hormones and their origin from the neural crest. An increasing number of APUD cells is being shown to elaborate polypeptide hormones. It is acknowledged that some members are derived from the neural crest, but there is a good reason to believe that others are not, and no good reason to believe that yet others are so derived. It is therefore suggested that the common factor sought in the genes

Derivation of safe exposure levels for potential migration of formaldehyde into food.

Polyoxymethylene (POM) is a polymer of formaldehyde used inter alia for kitchenware and food processing machines. By migration into food, consumers may be exposed to small additional amounts of formaldehyde in food. In order to address such potential exposures, Specific Migration Limits are derived using all studies with oral exposure in mammals and birds. The assessment is not only based on local irritation observed in a 2-year rat study that has previously served to calculate acceptable exposure levels, but also on systemic effects, namely on effects on the kidney in adult rats and testes in

Distribution of doublecortin in the developing retina of birds: A comparative analysis.

The avian retina presents an elegant and highly accessible model for investigating the spatial and temporal dynamics of neurogenesis within the central nervous system. In recent years, the microtubule cytoskeleton has emerged not merely as a structural scaffold, but as a dynamic regulator of the transition of a morphologically homogeneous pool of multipotent progenitor cells to postmitotic neurons. Doublecortin (DCX) is a microtubule-associated protein broadly recognized for its fundamental roles in neuronal migration, differentiation, and structural plasticity within the developing nervous sy

A rare imaging presentation with multisystemic clinicopathological features of Langerhans cell histiocytosis: Case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a kind of rare disease in which dendritic cells proliferate abnormally. It often occurs in children and can involve any tissue and organ. The affected sites usually include bone, skin, pituitary gland, and lungs, while the thyroid gland and external auditory canal are rarely observed. The perineal and labial involvement of this disease has not been reported yet. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 47-year-old female patient experienced a swelling of the anterior neck area without an obvious inducement. She noticed a quail egg-like mass on the left side, and t

A perspective of the prevalent H9N2 virus with a special focus on molecular and pathological aspects in commercial broiler chicken in Punjab, Pakistan.

Frequent outbreaks of avian influenza H9N2 virus in Pakistan revealed that this subtype has become endemic in the poultry industry and, besides economic losses, poses a threat to public health. The present study describes the molecular characterization and pathological alterations in naturally infected broiler chickens with the current H9N2 field strain and their phylogenomic dynamics. In this study, tissue samples (trachea, lung, kidney and intestine) from 100 commercial chicken flocks were collected from July 2018 to August 2019. Samples were subjected to molecular detection, phylogeny and s

Effects of traffic noise exposure on corticosterone, glutathione and tonic immobility in chicks of a precocial bird.

Repeated exposure to traffic noise may be perceived as a succession of stressors, and therefore, noisy urban environments could lead to a state of chronic stress. In developing animals, glucocorticoids can have organizational effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in addition to the classic activation effects, so evaluating the effect of traffic noise during development is urgently needed. To our knowledge, to date six studies have investigated the effects of traffic noise on baseline corticosterone (CORT) and/or the stress response in birds during development; however, these studi

Feeding behavior and spatial distribution of Culex mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in wetland areas of the Czech Republic.

Mosquito feeding behavior determines the degree of vector-host contact and may have a serious impact on the risk of pathogen transmission, including that of the West Nile virus (WNV). To measure the role of Culex mosquitoes as WNV vectors, host-seeking females were collected using animal-baited traps containing live birds (quail) or mammals (rabbits) and CO2-baited Center for Disease Control and Prevention traps placed in several wetland areas in the Czech Republic. Culex pipiens (L.) and Culex modestus (F.) were the most frequently collected species. Although Cx. modestus did not distinguish

Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone action in the brain and pituitary.

Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) was first identified in the Japanese quail as a hypothalamic neuropeptide inhibitor of gonadotropin secretion. Subsequent studies have shown that GnIH is present in the brains of birds including songbirds, and mammals including humans. The identified avian and mammalian GnIH peptides universally possess an LPXRFamide (X = L or Q) motif at their C-termini. Mammalian GnIH peptides are also designated as RFamide-related peptides from their structures. The receptor for GnIH is the G protein-coupled receptor 147 (GPR147), which is thought to be coupled to G(αi

Repeated West Nile virus epidemic transmission in Kern County, California, 2004-2007.

West Nile virus (WNV) has remained epidemic in Kern County, CA, since its introduction in 2004 through 2007 when the human case annual incidence increased from 6-8 to 17 per 100,000, respectively. The 2007 increase in human infection was associated with contradicting surveillance indicators, including severe drought, warm spring but cool summer temperature anomalies, decreased rural and urban mosquito abundance but increased early season infection in urban Culex quinquefasciatus Say, moderate avian "herd immunity," and declines in the catch of competent (western scrub-jay and house finch) and

Distribution, markers, and functions of retinal microglia.

Retinal microglia originate from hemopoietic cells and invade the retina from the retinal margin and the optic disc, most likely via the blood vessels of the ciliary body and iris, and the retinal vasculature, respectively. The microglial precursors that appear in the retina prior to vascularization are major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I- and II-positive and express the CD45 marker, but lack specific macrophage markers. They differentiate into ramified parenchymal microglia in the adult retina. A second category of microglial precursors, which do express specific macrophage markers

The recombinant limb as a model for the study of limb patterning, and its application to muscle development.

The recombinant limb is a model system that has proved fruitful for analyzing epithelial-mesenchymal interactions and understanding the functional properties of the components of the limb bud. Here we present an overview of some of the insights obtained through the use of this technique. Among these are the understanding that fore or hind limb identity is inherent to the limb bud mesoderm, that the apical ectodermal ridge (AER) is a permissive signaling center and that the limb bud ectoderm plays a central role in the control of dorsoventral polarity. Recombinant limb studies have also allowed

Late emigrating neural crest cells migrate specifically to the exit points of cranial branchiomotor nerves.

Morphological segmentation of the avian hindbrain into rhombomeres is also reflected by the emergent organisation of branchiomotor nerves. In each case, the motor neurons of these nerves lie in two adjacent rhombomeres (e.g. of the Vth nerve in r2 and r3, VIIth in r4 and r5 etc.), and their outgrowing axons emerge into the periphery through defined exit points in rhombomeres r2, r4 and r6, respectively. Sensory axons of the cranial ganglia also enter the neuroepithelium at the same points. Motor axon outgrowth through experimentally rotated rhombomeres has suggested that a chemoattractive mech

[The study of the contamination and the levels of Campylobacter spp. during the processing of selected types of foods].

The purpose of the work was to study the nature of the Campylobacter spp. contamination during the processing of food products of plant and animal origin (raw poultry and beef meat, raw milk, leafy salads, sliced raw vegetables). In the study of 148 samples 50 strains of Campylobacter spp. (33.8%) were found. For the main phenotypic characteristics they were identified as C. jejuni spp. jejuni and C. jejuni spp. doylei (over 75%). The highest level of detection of campylobacteria (over 45%) was set for raw poultry, including the carcasses of chickens broilers, quails, turkeys and their semi-fi

The effect of vagal neural crest ablation on the chick embryo cloaca.

The cloaca, the caudal limit of the avian gastrointestinal tract, acts as a collecting chamber into which the gastrointestinal, urinary, and genital tracts discharge. It is intrinsically innervated by the enteric nervous system, which is derived from neural crest emigres that migrate from the vagal and sacral regions of the neural tube. Abnormal cloacal development can cause a number of anorectal anomalies, including persistent cloaca. Ablation of the vagal neural crest has previously been shown to result in an aganglionic hindgut to the extent of the colorectum. The aim of our study was to in
