Real-time confocal microscopy of keratocyte activity in wound healing after cryoablation in rabbit corneas.

A modified tandem scanning confocal microscope was used for real-time in vivo examination of the rabbit cornea following a cryogenic injury. The corneas of New Zealand white rabbits were frozen with a probe that had been cooled by immersion in liquid nitrogen, effectively destroying keratocytes in a central 5 mm diameter zone throughout the total thickness of the cornea. In these eyes, keratocyte repopulation and corneal stromal wound healing proceeded similarly to that which occurs after epikeratophakia, a refractive surgical procedure designed to change the curvature and optical power of the

Keratocyte activity in wound healing after epikeratophakia in rabbits.

Epikeratophakia is a refractive surgical procedure for the correction of aphakia, high myopia, or keratoconus. To solve clinical problems associated with epikeratophakia, a basic knowledge of its postoperative healing process is needed. The authors investigated keratocyte activities, particularly cell proliferation and collagen synthesis, during wound healing after epikeratophakia in rabbits. Epikeratophakia was done on rabbit corneas with a homologous cryolathed keratolens. Ten, 16, 28, 45, 63, 90, 254, and 360 days after the operation, the corneas were excised, labeled with either 3H-thymidi

Real-time visualization of endoscope-brain interactions using a transparent ventricular model.

PURPOSE: Safe intraventricular neuroendoscopy requires refined instrument control within narrow and often distorted working corridors. A significant proportion of surgical complications-such as forniceal injury and vascular compromise-arises from mechanical interactions between the endoscope shaft/sheath and intraventricular structures that remain invisible to the surgeon during the procedure. No existing high-fidelity simulator allows for the real-time, external visualization of these "blind" movements. We developed a novel, high-clarity transparent ventricular model to clarify these interact

[First Experience with Femtosecond Laser Presbyopia Correction Method INTRACOR].

UNLABELLED: We report the first experience with presbyopia correcting femtosecond laser surgical procedure INTRACOR. This procedure is so far the only one that is made purely intrastromally without generating a wound connected to corneal surface or anterior chamber.Presbyopia - caused by physiological aging and decreasing elasticity of the lens, impairs patients accommodative ability. In the case of the method INTRACOR, presbyopia is corrected by steepening of corneal curvature in the central optical zone. Procedure is usually performed only in the non-dominant eye. METHODS: Intracor procedur
