The Foxb1-expressing neurons of the ventrolateral hypothalamic parvafox nucleus project to defensive circuits.

The parvafox nucleus is an elongated structure that is lodged within the ventrolateral hypothalamus and lies along the optic tract. It compr … ay (PAG), the Su3 and PV2 nuclei of the ventrolateral PAG, the cuneiform nucleus, the mesencephalic reticular formation, and the superior colliculus. Intermediate densities of terminals were encountered in the septum, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, substantia innominata, various thalamic and hypothalamic nuclei, pedunculopontine nucleus, Barrington's nucleus, r …

Blink reflex in progressive myoclonic epilepsies.

PURPOSE: Progressive myoclonic epilepsies (PME) include a heterogeneous group of disorders. The brainstem is involved in these disorders, as … ONCLUSION: The abnormalities of the R2 and R2c components of the BR confirmed the inhibition of the reticular formation. The findings are probably related to disease processes and partially due to the use of multiple antiepileptic drugs.

Immunotropic effects of hexavalent chromium soluble compounds on the thymus and peripheral blood values in a subacute experiment.

Intraperitoneal injections of hexavalent chromium (sodium bichromate) in the concentrations of 0.025 μg/kg (10-fold lower than MAC; group 1) and 2.5 μg/kg (10-fold higher than MAC; group 2) to rats in a subacute experiment caused dose-dependent morphological changes in the thymus: increased the counts of cells in a state of destruction, macrophages, and plasmocytes and impairs interactions between epithelial reticular cells and lymphocytes with formation of cystic cavities. Proliferation of lymphoblasts and large lymphocytes of the glandular cortical matter was detected in groups 1 and 2, of m

Nuclear, internuclear, and supranuclear ocular motor disorders.

Ipsilateral saccades are controlled by the ipsilateral paramedian pontine reticular formation located close to the sixth nucleus, whereas the ipsilateral VOR is controlled by the contralateral medial vestibular nucleus. Vertical eye movements are controlled by the third- and fourth-nerve nuclei in the midbrain. A lesion unilaterally affectin …

Distribution of the protein IMPACT, an inhibitor of GCN2, in the mouse, rat, and marmoset brain.

IMPACT is an inhibitor of GCN2, a kinase that phosphorylates the alpha subunit of the translation initiation factor 2 (eIF2 alpha). GCN2 has been implicated in regulating feeding behavior and learning and memory in mice. IMPACT is highly abundant in the brain, suggesting its relevance in the control of GCN2 activation in the central nervous system. We describe here the distribution of IMPACT in the brain of rodents (mice and rats) and of a primate (marmoset) using highly specific antibodies raised against the mouse IMPACT protein. Neurons expressing high levels of IMPACT were found in most are

Identification of penile inputs to the rat gracile nucleus.

Neurons in the medullary reticular formation (MRF) of the rat receive a vast array of urogenital inputs. Using select acute and chronic spinal cord lesions to identify the location of the ascending neural circuitries providing either direct or indirect inputs to MRF from the penis, our previous studies demonstrated that the dorsal columns and dorsal half of the lateral funiculus convey low- and high-threshold inputs, respectively. In the present study, the gracile nucleus was targeted as one of the likely sources of low-threshold information from the penis to MRF. Both electrophysiological rec…

Activation and desensitization of neuronal nicotinic receptors modulate glutamatergic transmission on neonatal rat hypoglossal motoneurons.

Hypoglossal motoneurons expressed functional nAChRs with characteristics of alpha4beta2 and alpha7 receptor subunits. Vocal circuitry in Xenopus laevis: telencephalon to laryngeal motor neurons.

Sexually differentiated calling patterns of Xenopus laevis are conveyed to the vocal organ by a dedicated neuromuscular system. Here, we def … irmed. Plausible hypotheses are that a set of rhombencephalic neurons located in DTAM, the inferior reticular formation and n.IX-X are responsible for generating patterned vocal activity, that activity is modulated by neurons in rRpd, and that activity in VS (particularly that evoked by conspecific calls), together with effects of steroid hormones at many sites in th …

The nucleus raphe interpositus in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (Machado-Joseph disease).

The nucleus raphe interpositus (RIP) plays an important role in the premotor network for saccades. Its omnipause neurons gate the activity of the burst neurons for vertical saccades lying within the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fascicle and that for horizontal saccades residing in the caudal subnucleus of the pontine reticular formation. In the present study we investigated the RIP in five patients with clinically diagnosed and genetically confirmed spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3), also known as Machado-Joseph disease. Polyethylene glycol-embedded 100 microm ser…
