The basic problem in the study of tick-borne virus diseases is to establish where the virus is maintained in nature. In general, this focus will be found where there are large and relatively stable populations of ticks, small rodents and insectivores. In the Tribec region the principal vector of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is Ixodes ricinus, although other species can circulate the virus under suitable conditions. The virus can persist during winter either in starving nymphs or adults or in non-starving larvae or nymphs. It can also persist in hibernating mammals, but this is a less importan

Tuco-tucos (Ctenomys coludo) are Neotropical rodents that inhabit the extreme photic environment of the subterranean, thus being intriguing models for chronobiological studies of circadian and seasonal rhythms. Here we characterized day/night profiles of plasma melatonin and glucocorticoids along with their activity/rest rhythms from freshly caught animals during two seasons. Animals were live-trapped in their native Monte Desert (Argentina) during summer (n = 27) and winter (n = 18), housed under constant dark conditions with wheel-running activity recording prior to sample collection. Rodent models are critical tools in the study of trauma and burn injury, giving mechanistic insights into the unique pathophysiological response and the systemic complications that follow. These models allow researchers to control injury patterns, longitudinally assess immune and metabolic responses, and evaluate therapeutic strategies in ways that are not feasible in human subjects. In this second part of our review, we examine how experimental trauma and burn models have evolved to better replicate the clinical trajectory of critically ill patients, with emphasis on polytrauma, burn injury,

Sterility control is one of the key tools for regulating pest rodent population density. An in-depth analysis of the molecular mechanism of sterility caused by control agents is of great significance for further exploration of novel sterility controls and the development of alternative drugs. In this study, male plateau zokors (Eospalax baileyi) in the breeding period were tested to explore the molecular mechanism of quinestrol-induced sterility. We used RNA-seq technology to investigate key genes and signaling pathways associated with the inhibition of testicular development and spermatogenes

Rodents and shrews are important reservoir hosts due to their close association with human activities and their role in carrying various zoonotic pathogens. Recently, meta-transcriptomic sequencing has become a powerful tool for surveilling and screening novel pathogens from wild animals. However, many of these studies focused only on the diversity and genetic evolution of viruses from wildlife, while ignoring non-viral pathogens such as bacterial and eukaryotic microorganisms. Here, we performed a comprehensive infectome analysis of 227 tissue samples collected from 42 rodents and 16 shrews a

This article provides a comprehensive overview of dental disease in myomorphic rodents, particularly rats and hamsters, which are increasingly being presented to veterinary clinics due to their popularity as pets. The most common dental problems include malocclusion, periodontal disease, caries, and odontogenic abscesses. Diagnosis is based on a thorough clinical examination, stomatoscopy under anesthesia and imaging-techniques such as radiography and computed tomography, which are crucial for detecting pathologic lesions, planning treatment, and preventing complications. Treatment strategies

Pavlovian fear conditioning is a widely used behavioural task for studying fear memory in rodents. During conditioning, rodents learn to associate a conditioned stimulus (e.g., context or tone; contextual or auditory fear conditioning, CFC or AFC, respectively) with an aversive one (e.g., footshock), resulting in a conditioned fear response. Fear memory retention is assessed thorough freezing behaviour, a species-specific defensive reaction, observed during exposure to the conditioned stimulus alone. Fear memory is influenced by sex and stress, with stress exposure prior to conditioning potent

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is an effective treatment for patients with refractory neuropsychiatric disorders such as Parkinson's disease and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The mechanisms of DBS are not well understood and may involve adjacent structures. They are also associated with many side effects. The medial subthalamic region (MSR) has been characterized in humans as an anatomical target of the hyperdirect pathway originating in limbic cortical areas. However, no clearly identified cell clusters or nuclei have been described. In contrast, the rod

In the United States, hantaviruses can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in humans, an acute respiratory illness with a high mortality rate. Most people contract HPS from exposure to infected rodent excrement. The interannual dynamics of hantavirus transmission are tied to both environmental and human-related factors, including changes in annual climate conditions, rodent populations, and the built environment in which humans are more likely to be exposed. Similar environmental conditions and socioeconomic factors also likely determine the long-term risk of hantavirus exposure. Here, w

BACKGROUND: Sand flies are vectors of the protozoan Leishmania spp. and phleboviruses. In Europe, several species are widely distributed in the Mediterranean region and a northward spread can be observed. They can be found regularly also in some regions of Central Europe, with Phlebotomus mascittii being the most cold-tolerant and northerly distributed species, but the knowledge on their distribution in countries such as Germany, Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary remains fragmentary because of a lack of comprehensive field studies and a poor understanding of the ecological requirements a

Tourette disorder (TD) is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting approximately 0.3%-1% of children and adolescents. It is defined by motor and vocal tics but encompasses wide ranging phenotypes due to its complex genetic origins, involving hundreds of risk genes across various signaling pathways. Traditional animal models of TD have focused on circuit manipulation or neuron ablation strategies to investigate its underlying causes and associated brain changes. However, the recent identification of high-confidence risk genes has opened new possibilities for creating models that express the exa

In this first report of endoparasites from endemic land-mammals of the Galápagos Islands, we describe a new species of cestode of the genus Raillietina (Cyclophyllidea: Davaineidae) from a species of Nesoryzomys and summarize the extent of helminth parasitism in both oryzomyine endemics and introduced species of Rattus. Up to the current time, no helminth parasites have been reported from rodents of the Galápagos, and little work has yet been done describing and synthesizing Galápagos parasite diversity. In historical times, several species of autochthonous rodents have occupied the islands in

The rat flea Xenopsylla brasiliensis, a known plague vector present in East and South Africa, has recently been identified in Mandritsara, Madagascar, a plague-endemic area. However, its national distribution remains poorly documented, and studies on other flea vectors and their small mammal hosts in this district are limited. We surveyed flea species, their mammalian hosts, and flea abundance, with a particular focus on X. brasiliensis, in four sites of Mandritsara District between 2021 and 2022. Small mammals were trapped for three consecutive nights per site, inside and outside houses, off-

Exposure of rodents to mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) is known to disrupt the blood-testis barrier and cause testicular germ cell apoptosis. Peritubular macrophages (PTMφ) are a newly identified type of testicular macrophage that aggregates near the spermatogonial stem cell niche. We have previously reported that MEHP exposure increased the numbers of PTMφs by 6-fold within the testis of peripubertal rats. The underlying mechanism(s) accounting for this change in PTMφs and its biological significance is unknown. This study investigates if MEHP-induced alterations in PTMφs occur in rodent

In December 2021, a wildlife conservation base in Hunan, China, reported illness and death among its captive Myocastor coypus population. A gram-positive pathogen was isolated from the affected animals. The 16S rDNA sequence of the isolated strain was approximately 1,500 bp long and exhibited 98.4% homogeneity with Staphylococcus cohnii found in sea cucumbers. Interestingly, the biochemical reactions of the isolated strain were consistent with the characteristics of S. cohnii. The LD100 for BALB/c mice was 1.2 × 107 CFU/g, while the MLD was 0.6 × 107 CFU/g. Inflammatory cell infiltration was o

Preclinical models (typically ovariectomized rats and genetically altered mice) have underpinned much of what we know about skeletal biology. They have been pivotal for developing therapies for osteoporosis and monogenic skeletal conditions, including osteogenesis imperfecta, achondroplasia, hypophosphatasia, and craniodysplasias. Further therapeutic advances, particularly to improve cortical strength, require improved understanding and more rigorous use and reporting. We describe here how trabecular and cortical bone structure develop, are maintained, and degenerate with aging in mice, rats,

We report the effect of a rodent control program on the incidence of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in an endemic region of Iran. A 1-year interruption in rodent control led to 2 years of increased incidence of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis. Restarting rodent control led to a decline of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis.

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a life-threatening disease in humans caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis. Domestic animals, dogs, foxes, and small mammals constitute the circular chain of AE. To evaluate the infection, distribution, and genetic polymorphism of AE in the Ili Prefecture (Nilka, Xinyuan and Zhaosu), we conducted this survey.
METHODS: In June and July 2018, 267 small mammals were captured using water-infusion and mousetrap methods. Combined pathogenic and molecular biological methods were used to observe the histopathology of Echinococcus carri
