[Dynamic ultrasound examination of the shoulder of golf players].

Although golf is becoming popular it can result in injury, usually from overuse and from poor technique. The shoulder is a commonly affected site, with the lead shoulder (or the left shoulder in the right-handed golfer) vulnerable to injury. With this study we tried to figure out any hyperlaxity of the lead shoulder using ultrasonography. 33 golf-players were investigated by questionnaire, clinical examination and dynamic ultrasonography. Neither clinically nor by using ultrasonography hyperlaxity of the shoulder was found. Nevertheless hyperlaxity followed by secondary impingement should be c

Spinal Accessory Nerve Injury Induced by Manipulation Therapy: A Case Report.

Spinal accessory nerve (SAN) injury mostly occurs during surgical procedures. SAN injury caused by manipulation therapy has been rarely reported. We present a rare case of SAN injury associated with manipulation therapy showing scapular winging and droopy shoulder. A 42-year-old woman visited our outpatient clinic complaining of pain and limited active range of motion (ROM) in right shoulder and scapular winging after manipulation therapy. Needle electromyography and nerve conduction study suggested SAN injury. Physical therapy (PT) three times a week for 2 weeks were prescribed. After a total

First-time traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation: Approach for the primary health care physician.

Traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation is a very common injury encountered in emergency rooms as well as in the primary health care physician's office. This injury occurs either in the setting of competitive or recreational sports injuries or as a high-energy injury during a fall or a road traffic accident. Common complications such as a recurrent dislocation can be predicted, monitored and prevented. Early appropriate treatment of associated cuff tears or fractures is associated with improved outcomes. There is a plethora of literature on the assessment and management of the primary anterior

MRI of the rotator cuff and internal derangement.

Disease to the rotator cuff is the most common cause of shoulder pain and dysfunction in adults. This group of muscles performs multiple functions and is often stressed during various activities. The anatomy and physiology of the rotator cuff is complex and interconnected to other muscle groups in the shoulder. One must take the anatomic status of the rotator cuff tendons into account when planning the treatment of the rotator cuff injury. Diagnostic imaging of the rotator cuff, performed by MRI, provides valuable information about the nature of the injury. In this article, we will review the

Shoulder instability in the young athlete.

Shoulder instability is among the most common musculoskeletal injuries and overuse conditions in pediatric and adolescent athletes requiring orthopaedic care. Injury patterns in skeletally immature patients are unique to the developing musculoskeletal system and may be specific to the involved sport. It is helpful to have an outline of the basic diagnostic approaches and to review the literature that guides management principles in young athletes with shoulder instability.

Management of the throwing shoulder: cuff, labrum and internal impingement.

Repetitive throwing or other overhead activity places great stress on the shoulder. As a result, the shoulder is a common site of injury in athletes. Addressing throwing-related injuries requires an understanding of throwing biomechanics and pathology. Nonoperative treatment is directed at restoring strength, flexibility, and neuromuscular control to the entire kinetic chain. Surgery is indicated when nonoperative treatment fails, and is directed at correcting labral, capsular, and rotator cuff pathology.

Descriptive epidemiology of collegiate women's softball injuries: National Collegiate Athletic Association Injury Surveillance System, 1988-1989 through 2003-2004.

OBJECTIVE: To review 16 years of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) injury surveillance data for women's softball and to identify potential areas for injury prevention initiatives. BACKGROUND: The NCAA Injury Surveillance System has tracked injuries in all divisions of NCAA softball from the 1988-1989 to the 2003-2004 seasons. This report describes what was found and why the findings are important for the safety, enhancement, and continued growth of the sport. MAIN RESULTS: Across all divisions, preseason practice injury rates were more than double the regular-season practice in

Restoring Horizontal Stability of the Acromioclavicular Joint: Open Acromioclavicular Ligament Reconstruction and Repair With Semitendinosus Allograft.

Injuries to the acromioclavicular (AC) joint are common and comprise ∼12% of shoulder injuries. Stability to the AC joint depends on the coracoclavicular (CC) ligaments for vertical stability and AC ligaments and capsular structures for horizontal stability. Injuries to the AC ligaments can lead to horizontal instability of the AC joint. There is no gold standard technique for treating these injuries surgically, and many of the described procedures focus on vertical instability rather than horizontal instability. This article describes an open AC ligament reconstruction with semitendinosus all…

Acute high-grade acromioclavicular joint injuries: quality of life comparison between patients managed operatively with a hook plate versus patients managed non-operatively.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical indication for acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) injuries still represents a reason for shoulder and trauma debate. In high-grade injuries, surgery is advocated because some of the non-operatively managed patients may have persistent shoulder pain that could make them unable to return to their previous activity. It has been shown that many of the patients with high-grade ACJ injuries that are managed non-operatively involve the development of scapular dyskinesis, situation that may result in loss of strength and weakness. On the other side, it has been widely reported that t

Traumatic Serratus Anterior Muscle Tear Presenting as Isolated Posterior Shoulder Pain in a Professional Volleyball Athlete: A Case Report.

Serratus anterior muscle injuries are rare, most commonly reported in rowing and overhead throwing athletes. These injuries typically present with anterolateral chest wall pain and a palpable mass. Atypical presentations may lead to diagnostic challenges, particularly when symptoms mimic shoulder pathology. We report the case of a 26-year-old male professional volleyball player who presented with acute-onset posterior shoulder pain following a serving motion. The pain persisted for two weeks and was exacerbated by overhead movements, particularly during spiking. Physical examination revealed l

Primary traumatic shoulder dislocation associated with rotator cuff tear in the elderly.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The shoulder is one of the most unstable joints of the body. Shoulder dislocation accounts for up to 60% of all major joint dislocations. This study reports two cases of primary traumatic shoulder dislocation and shows that in the elderly, primary traumatic shoulder dislocation is associated with a rotator cuff tear (RCT). CASE PRESENTATION: A case report and narrative review included two female patients, aged 63 and 100 years. Presenting symptoms were instability, pain, and restricted shoulder movement. Both were successfully treated by surgery. Arthroscopy was p

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Locked Posterior Dislocation of the Shoulder Treated with Shoulder Arthroplasty: Improved Outcomes for Total Shoulder Arthroplasty are Associated with Increased Age.

Locked shoulder dislocations account for up to 5% of shoulder dislocations. These relatively rare injuries are characterized by dislocation of the humeral head from the scapular glenoid cavity with the humeral head incarcerated on the glenoid in a "locked" fashion. Diagnosis is often delayed because of the complexity of clinical presentation and subtle radiographic findings, resulting in locking of the humeral head out of the glenoid cavity with severe functional deficits. Most commonly, there are bony injuries to the glenoid and humeral head that engage and prevent closed reduction. Since few
