The Effects of Vitamin Therapy on ASD and ADHD: A Narrative Review.

The effects of a sufficient amount of vitamins and nutrients on the proper function of the nervous system have always been regarded by scientists. In recent years, many studies have been done on controlling or improving the symptoms of neurological and behavioral disorders created by changes in the level of vitamins and other nutrition, such as omega-3 and iron supplements. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that disrupts individual communication, especially in social interactions. Its symptoms include anxiety, violence, depression, self-injury, trouble with social

Effects of Equine Therapy on Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Literature on effects of equine therapy in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has grown in recent times. Equine therapy is an alternative multimodal intervention that involves utilizing a horse to enhance core impairments in ASD. Recent systematic reviews in this area have several limitations including inclusion of populations other than ASD, assessment of a variety of animal-assisted interventions other than equine therapy, and a failure to conduct quantitative analyses to provide accurate effect size estimates. We conducted a focused systematic review to address these limitation

The structure of autism spectrum disorder symptoms in the general population at 18 months.

It is unclear whether symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in young children in the population fit the three-factor structure of ASD as described in the DSM-IV, and cluster together in individual subjects. This study analysed questionnaire data on ASD symptoms filled in by mothers of 11,332 18-month-old children that was collected in the context of the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study conducted by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. Confirmatory Factor Analyses showed that the three-factor model had a significantly better fit then the two- and one-factor model of ASD symptom

The clinical practice of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for children and young people with a diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome.

Children and young people diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) have significant social-communication difficulties and impaired empathy and theory of mind skills. These difficulties place them at risk of developing mental health problems, particularly anxiety, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. Although Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is recognised as an effective intervention for these problems in both child and adult populations, little research has specifically looked at the use of CBT with children and young people with an AS diagnosis. However, limited evidence suggests t

Cognitive behaviour therapy via interactive video.

Interactive video has been identified as a potential delivery medium for psychotherapy. Interactive video may restrict the range of both verbal and non-verbal communication and consequently impede the development of a therapeutic relationship, thus influencing the process and outcome of therapy. A single case study explored the feasibility of the provision of congnitive behaviour therapy using interactive video with a client diagnosed as having mixed anxiety and depressive disorder. A range of outcome measures were included together with an independent psychiatric assessment prior to, and on c

Anxiety, depression, loneliness and social network in the elderly: Longitudinal associations from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA).

BACKGROUND: Social network, loneliness, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depression disorder (MDD) are interrelated. However, as the directions of these associations are still unclear, we examined them prospectively using community-based data. METHODS: Data on 5066 adults aged ≥50 years from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) were analyzed. Loneliness was assessed through the UCLA loneliness scale. Social integration was measured using the Berkman-Syme Social Network Index. MDD and GAD were assessed with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). Logistic

Applying Group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety Disorders in Community Settings: Retention, Outcome, and Clinical Considerations.

The efficacy, and to a lesser extent, effectiveness, of individual cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety disorders has been demonstrated, but whether manualized treatments work in a group format in community settings is less established. We investigated the predictors of retention and outcome in 26 groups (11 Generalized Anxiety Disorder, 11 Panic, 4 Social Phobia groups), conducted for more than 10 years in a semirural community mental health center by 19 therapists. Members of the Anxiety Disorders Treatment Team delivered manualized group CBT treatments. Analysis of standard sympto

Health Communication Campaign Performance During the HEALing Communities Study: Cross-Sectional Examination of Digital Advertising Methods.

BACKGROUND: Research on the effectiveness of digital health campaign strategies is lacking. Understanding performance outcomes is essential for the successful implementation of campaigns. Two studies examined platforms, tactics, and content of digital health campaigns using paid media performance data. OBJECTIVE: This analysis compared 2 digital advertising methods (social media and banner or display) using click-through rate (CTR) and cost-per-click (CPC) as performance measures. Performance differences by state, community type, message approach, format, and image type were assessed. CTR and

Prevalence, Factor Structure, and Heritability of Avoidant Personality Disorder.

To review the community prevalence, factor structure, and heritability of avoidant personality disorder (AVPD), we reviewed the literature of empirical studies reported between years 1980 and 2020. Community point prevalence rates ranged from 0.8% to 5%, with one study of women older than 25 years finding a lifetime rate of 9.3%. A weighted point prevalence for studies involving both men and women was 3.3%. All factor analytic studies indicated a one factor solution. The themes were social inadequacy, feeling inferior, and fears of social rejection. Family studies of heritability for AVPD rang

Social ecology of child soldiers: child, family, and community determinants of mental health, psychosocial well-being, and reintegration in Nepal.

This study employed a social ecology framework to evaluate psychosocial well-being in a cross-sectional sample of 142 former child soldiers in Nepal. Outcome measures included the Depression Self Rating Scale (DSRS), Child Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Scale (CPSS), and locally developed measures of functional impairment and reintegration. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to examine the contribution of factors at multiple levels. At the child level, traumatic exposures, especially torture, predicted poor outcomes, while education improved outcomes. At the family level, conflict-re

Atypical Social Behavior is Predicted by Overconnectivity Between Salience and Default Mode Networks in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

As Default Mode and Salience networks (DMN, SN) contribute to social behavior and switching between inner and outer attention, they are believed to function and develop differently in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, it remains unclear what alterations of their interactivity are connected to certain autistic traits and how age influences these networks' maturing. Behavioral (social responsiveness, executive functions and communication skills) and resting-state functional connectivity (FC) data from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange were analyzed comprising individ

Pediatric social robotics in ASD: navigating AI blind-spots toward clinical validation.

UNLABELLED: As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into children's therapeutic environments, social robots are emerging as one of the most clinically complex AI applications for pediatric autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This mini-review examines three under-validated "blind-spot" domains: robot-wearable sensor integration, immersive VR-robot hybrid systems, and generative AI conversational interfaces. Although these technologies offer promising opportunities for adaptive and personalized intervention, current evidence remains limited by small pilot studies, insufficient lon

Human-derived fecal microbiota transplantation alleviates social deficits of the BTBR mouse model of autism through a potential mechanism involving vitamin B6 metabolism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social communication deficiencies and stereotypic behaviors influenced by hereditary and/or environmental risk factors. There are currently no approved medications for treating the core symptoms of ASD. Human fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has emerged as a potential intervention to improve autistic symptoms, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, we evaluated the effects of human-derived FMT on behavioral and multi-omics profiles of the BTBR mice, an establish

Social anxiety and the interpretation of positive social events.

We report four independent studies that examined the relationship between social interaction anxiety and the tendency to interpret positive social events in a threat-maintaining manner. Study 1 described the development of a scale that measures negative interpretations of positive social events, the interpretation of positive events scale (IPES). Study 2 cross-validated the structure of the IPES and established that social interaction anxiety explained significant variance in negative interpretations of positive social events beyond negative affect in general. Study 3 demonstrated that negativ

Behavioral and neurochemical profile of MK-801 adult zebrafish model: Forebrain β2-adrenoceptors contribute to social withdrawal and anxiety-like behavior.

Deficits in social communication and interaction are core clinical symptoms characterizing multiple neuropsychiatric conditions, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia. Interestingly, elevated anxiety levels are a common comorbid psychopathology characterizing individuals with aberrant social behavior. Despite recent progress, the underlying neurobiological mechanisms that link anxiety with social withdrawal remain poorly understood. The present study developed a zebrafish pharmacological model displaying social withdrawal behavior, following a 3-h exposure to 4 μΜ (+)-MK-8

Validation of the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) to screen for atypical social behaviors in juvenile macaques.

Primates form strong social bonds and depend on social relationships and networks that provide shared resources and protection critical for survival. Social deficits such as those present in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other psychiatric disorders hinder the individual's functioning in communities. Given that early diagnosis and intervention can improve outcomes and trajectories of ASD, there is a great need for tools to identify early markers for screening/diagnosis, and for translational animal models to uncover biological mechanisms and develop treatments. One of the most widely used

A Point in the Heart: Concepts of Emotional Distress Among Albanian-Speaking Immigrants in Switzerland.

Cultural variability regarding concepts of distress for common mental disorders (CMD) has been reported extensively in cultural clinical psychology across the globe. However, little is known about illness narratives in social communities from Southeast Europe. The purpose of this paper is to identify cultural concepts of distress (CCDs) among Albanian-speaking immigrants in Switzerland and to integrate the findings into literature from other parts of the world. Twenty semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted using the Barts Explanatory Model Inventory (BEMI). A set of concepts was

Community severance and mental health-related hospital visits in New York City.

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders are more prevalent in urban areas; urban living has been linked to increased risk of anxiety, mood, and schizophrenia disorders. These associations may be partially explained by the social and physical urban environment. While traffic-related exposures such as air pollution and noise have been linked to adverse mental health outcomes, the role of road infrastructure and traffic in severing communities and breaking down the social fabric-termed community severance-remains understudied. METHODS: We conducted ZIP code-level analyses (2011-2014) to investigate
