Effects of a workplace participatory approach to support working caregivers in balancing work, private life and informal care: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Many employees combine their work with informal care responsibilities for family and friends, potentially impacting their well-being and sustained employability. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a workplace participatory approach (PA) intervention in supporting working caregivers to prevent and solve problems related to balancing work, private life, and informal care tasks. METHODS: We conducted a two-armed randomized controlled trial (ISRCTN15363783) in which working caregivers either received the PA (N=57), under guidance of an occupational professional servi

Identifying long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 and their association with social determinants of health in a cohort of over one million COVID-19 survivors.

BACKGROUND: Despite an abundance of information on the risk factors of SARS-CoV-2, there have been few US-wide studies of long-term effects. In this paper we analyzed a large medical claims database of US based individuals to identify common long-term effects as well as their associations with various social and medical risk factors. METHODS: The medical claims database was obtained from a prominent US based claims data processing company, namely Change Healthcare. In addition to the claims data, the dataset also consisted of various social determinants of health such as race, income, educati

Welfare consequences for people diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): A matched nationwide study in Denmark.

There is insufficient data regarding the excess direct and indirect costs associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Using the Danish National Patient Registry (2002-2016), we identified 83,613 people of any age with a diagnosis of ADHD or who were using central-acting medication against ADHD (primarily methylphenidate, with at least two prescriptions) and matched them to 334,446 control individuals. Additionally, 18,959 partners of patients aged ≥18 years with ADHD were identified, and compared with 74,032 control partners. Direct costs were based on data from the Danish

How to reduce the latent social risk of disease: the determinants of vaccination against rabies in Taiwan.

To control the latent social risk of disease, the government usually spreads accurate information and attempts to improve the public's attitude toward adopting prevention. However, these methods with the Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) model do not always work. Therefore, we used the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to understand dog owners' behavior and distinguished the knowledge effect as objective knowledge (OK) and subjective knowledge (SK). A total of 310 dog owners completed a questionnaire based on our model. We employed structural equation modeling to verify the structural r

[A model for integrating mental health care resources in the rural population of Mexico].

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this project was to identify behaviors of health service utilization to solve mental health-related problems among rural inhabitants of Mexico. A model of pathways to mental health services was built. Based on this model, an integration-intervention model is proposed to help improve access to mental health services and their quality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 1997, in-depth interviews were conducted among 21 adults (9 men and 12 women) and seven healthcare providers, in a rural community in Jalisco, Mexico. Women's age ranged from 23 to 44 years; ten were married and

Navigating HIV status disclosure: Adolescents' privacy management strategies in Rural South Africa.

We examined how adolescents living with HIV in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, navigate privacy boundaries in disclosure-related issues. We conducted small group discussions with 31 adolescents (aged 16-19 years) recruited from three HIV clinics. Reflexive thematic data analysis was conducted through the lens of communication privacy management theory. Three major themes emerged: (1) ownership and control of private information, in which adolescents demonstrated varying levels of autonomy over their HIV status information, often developing strategies to manage medication discreetly; (2) man

Area-Level Social Determinants of Alcohol-Related Mortality: Knowledge Gaps and Implications for Community Health.

PURPOSE: Rates of alcohol-related mortality (including deaths attributed to chronic alcohol use as well as acute causes involving alcohol) have been increasing in the United States, particularly for certain population subgroups, such as women. This review summarizes associations of area-level social determinants of health with alcohol-related mortality. These determinants, measured at the community, county, or state level, include alcohol control policies, health care availability, and a community's socioeconomic environment. Examining multiple geographic levels illuminates how macro-level soc

Right lateral fusiform gyrus dysfunction during facial information processing in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia exhibit facial information processing deficits that likely contribute to their social dysfunction. Whether the deficits involve facial affect and/or identity processing or result from other cognitive abnormalities in schizophrenia remains controversial, and a brain dysfunction specifically related to them has never been reported. If such dysfunction existed, it should be consistently observed across groups of patients and during performance of different facial information processing tasks, independently of whether such tasks demand working memory (WM), s

Study protocol: CareAvenue program to improve unmet social risk factors and diabetes outcomes- A randomized controlled trial.

Despite the burdens costs can place on adults with diabetes, few evidence-based, scalable interventions have been identified that address prevalent health-related financial burdens and unmet social risk factors that serve as major obstacles to effective diabetes management. In this study, we will test the effectiveness of CareAvenue - an automated e-health tool that screens for unmet social risk factors and informs and activates individuals to take steps to connect to resources and engage in self-care. We will determine the effectiveness of CareAvenue relative to standard care with respect to

Evolving HIV Epidemiology in Mainland China: 2009-2018.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review is intended to provide an overview of the evolution of HIV epidemiology over the past decade in China. RECENT FINDINGS: We provided a succinct overall view of the epidemic, followed by surveillance data, profiles of key populations, HIV molecular epidemiology, and drug resistance, as well as survival in the age of antiretroviral therapy usage. For each topical issue, we first reviewed the latest empirical evidence, followed by a brief summary assessment. We briefly addressed the challenges and opportunities of the next generation of HIV control and prevention ef

Brief report: impaired identification of discrepancies between expressive faces and voices in adults with Asperger's syndrome.

The aim of the present experiment was to examine the ability of adults with Asperger's syndrome and age-matched typically-developing controls to identify incongruent and congruent emotional information from the face and voice. In the first part of the experiment, participants determined whether simultaneously presented expressive faces and voices were the same or different. In the second part, participants identified expressive faces and voices in isolation. Results showed that relative to controls, adults with AS were less accurate at distinguishing between congruent and incongruent expressiv

The Community Navigator Study: a feasibility randomised controlled trial of an intervention to increase community connections and reduce loneliness for people with complex anxiety or depression.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is associated with poor health outcomes at all ages, including shorter life expectancy and greater risk of developing depression. People with mental health problems are particularly vulnerable to loneliness and, for those with anxiety or depression, loneliness is associated with poorer outcomes. Interventions which support people to utilise existing networks and access new social contact are advocated in policy but there is little evidence regarding their effectiveness. People with mental health problems have potential to benefit from interventions to reduce loneliness,

Feasibility and cross-cultural validation of an adapted social skills group training programme (KONTAKTTM CHILD) for Chinese autistic children: a waitlist RCT protocol.

INTRODUCTION: School-age autistic children commonly experience social communication and interaction challenges in their everyday lives. While international evidence suggests that social skills group training (SSGT) programmes can support autistic children, improving their psychosocial functioning, to date there is no standardised evidence-based SSGT tailored towards the needs of autistic children aged 8-12 years living in the Chinese Mainland. Therefore, the primary objective of this study will be to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a culturally adapted 16-session version of the s

Severity of childhood maltreatment predicts reaction times and heart rate variability during an emotional working memory task in borderline personality disorder.

UNLABELLED: Background: Difficulties in emotion regulation are a core symptom of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and often interfere with cognitive functions, such as working memory (WM). Traumatic childhood experiences, including severe maltreatment, can contribute to emotion dysregulation, possibly mediated by changes in high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV). However, it is not yet entirely understood if HF-HRV alterations underlie impaired WM during emotional distraction in BPD and if this is related to traumatic childhood experiences and to comorbid post-traumatic stress dis

Theory-Based Social Media Intervention for Nonmedical Use of Prescription Opioids in Young Adults: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The nonmedical use of prescription opioids (NMUPO) in young adults in the United States is concerning and is robustly influenced by many psychosocial factors. Given the advantages of flexibility, wide coverage, and real-time responses and assessment, using social media appears to be a promising and innovative approach to delivering psychosocial intervention to young adults. However, few theory-based social media interventions are available for NMUPO targeting this at-risk population. OBJECTIVE: Guided by the information-motivation-behavioral skills model, the proposed research aim
