Clinical Updates in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Concussion).

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects > 3 million people in the United States annually. Although the number of deaths related to severe TBIs has stabalized, mild TBIs, often termed concussions, are increasing. As evidence indicates that a significant proportion of these mild injuries are associated with long-lasting functional deficits that impact work performance, social integration, and may predispose to later cognitive decline, it is important that we (a) recognize these injuries, (b) identify those at highest risk of poor recovery, and (c) initiate appropriate treatments promptly. We discus…

Neighborhood Disorganization and Child-rearing Beliefs Toward Physical Punishment Among Asian American Parents: The Mediation Role of Parenting Stress.

Previous studies have indicated that neighborhood disorganization affects child-rearing beliefs in the United States, but few studies have focused on such influences among Asian American parents. Largely due to Asian American parents' immigration experiences, neighborhood disorganization factors inevitably intersect with their traditional cultures, which may lead to different patterns in their parental beliefs. Using structural equation modeling, this study found that neighborhood disorganization factors directly influenced Asian American parents' beliefs toward physical punishment and parenti

Pain, Opioids, and Pregnancy: Historical Context and Medical Management.

Women are being disproportionately affected by the opioid crisis, including during pregnancy. Pain and other vulnerabilities to addiction differ between men and women. Management of opioid use disorder should be gender informed and accessible across the lifespan. During pregnancy, care teams should be multidisciplinary to include obstetrics, addiction, social work, anesthesia, pediatrics, and behavioral health. Pain management for women with opioid use disorder requires tailored approaches, including integration of trauma-informed care and addressing psychosocial needs. Thus, coordinated conti

Prosthetic rehabilitation of a child suffering from hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with complete anodontia.

A 7-year-old male, described in the case report, exhibited many of the manifestations of ectodermal dysplasia as well as behavioral problems. The treatment to improve his appearance and oral function included a removable prosthesis. The results were significant improvements in speech, masticatory function, and facial esthetics, contributing to the development of normal dietary habits, and the improved and more rapid social integration of the child. How to cite this article: Bala S, Nikhil M, Chugh A, Narwal A. Prosthetic Rehabilitation of a Child Suffering from Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasi…

Effects of a Virtual Reality-Based Nursing Intervention Using the Roy Adaptation Model on Social Anxiety in Young Adults.

PURPOSE: To determine the effects of an innovative nursing practice approach based on the Roy Adaptation Model (RAM) integrated with virtual reality (VR) on social anxiety levels among young adults. METHOD: A single-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted with 55 young adults aged 18 to 25 years. The intervention, based on the RAM, comprised six sessions focusing on psychoeducation, relaxation, and cognitive restructuring. VR was integrated into four of the sessions, aiming to simulate social situations and provide real-time feedback. Data were collected using the Liebowitz Social An

Psychosocial factors of insomnia in depression: a network approach.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) are common and deleterious. Childhood trauma, personality traits, interpersonal distress, and social support contribute to insomnia, but how they interact to affect insomnia remains uncertain. METHODS: A total of 791 patients with MDD completed the Insomnia Severity Index, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, Interpersonal Relationship Comprehensive Diagnostic Scale, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Social Support Rating Scale and Hamilton Depression Scale-17. This study utilized network analyses to identify the centr

Group-Based Integrative Pain Management in Primary Care: A Study Protocol for Multilevel Interventions to Address Health Disparities.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomically disadvantaged populations have a high prevalence of chronic pain, exacerbated by social isolation, intersectional stigma, and disparities in pain assessment and treatment. Effective interventions using a multilevel, biopsychosocial approach are needed to decrease the unequal burden of pain. Group-based integrative pain management in primary care safety net clinics is a promising model to improve pain care for racially and ethnically diverse low-income people. OBJECTIVE: To describe a study protocol to test the impacts of 2 group-based models - group acupuncture a

Major clinical improvement in a boy with developmental disabilities and a PTPN4 mutation with intensive re-education and an enriched environment in a day care hospital: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Protein tyrosine phosphatase, non-receptor type 4 (PTPN4) is a gene involved in glutamate downstream signaling contributing to cerebral maturation. Loss-of-function of this gene has been reported in patients showing various neurodevelopmental disorders, although the PTPN4 gene is not clearly considered a disease-causing gene in the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man catalogue. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report the case of a 7-year-old white boy with a homogeneous, heterozygous, 170 kb chromosomal deletion encompassing several exons of the PTPN4 gene. The mutation was transmitted

Mapping the evidence on public health competency assessment strategies in undergraduate medical education: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The increasing complexity of health systems and the growing importance of social determinants of health require physicians trained with a population-based perspective. However, assessment of public health competencies in undergraduate medical education remains heterogeneous, with limited conceptual integration and lack of standardised approaches. OBJECTIVE: To map and characterise the scientific evidence on strategies used to assess public health competencies in undergraduate medical students. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following Joanna Briggs Institute methodology a

Bridging the policy-practice gap: A call for urgent early intervention and early education South African policy reform for children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

In the global context, South Africa demonstrates higher disabling-hearing-loss prevalence rates than high-income countries because of its contextual challenges such as high burden of disease and audiology service access inequity. While high-income countries demonstrate integrated Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programmes with mandated support, South Africa faces distinctive challenges in translating its early intervention policy precepts into actionable support systems, with fragmentation across health, social development, and education sectors for children who are deaf or har

Provider perspectives on screening and treatment for opioid use disorder and mental health in HIV care: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: HIV, opioid use disorder (OUD), and mental health challenges share multiple syndemic risk factors. Each can be effectively treated with routine outpatient appointments, medication management, and psychosocial support, leading implementers to consider integrated screening and treatment for OUD and mental health in HIV care. Provider perspectives are crucial to understanding barriers and strategies for treatment integration. METHODS: We conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with 21 HIV treatment providers and social services providers (12 individual interviews and 1 group interv

The AI health divide: Three challenges and recommendations to improve design, transparency, and access for low-SES communities.

BackgroundLow socioeconomic status (SES) communities have been historically disadvantaged by food deserts, limited health and digital literacy, and restricted access to healthcare and digital technologies. These factors have increased the prevalence of chronic disease and contributed to reduced engagement with healthcare systems. Alongside this, the rapid increase in popularity of Artificial Intelligence (AI), integration into healthcare systems such as patient portals, symptom checkers, and care coordination platforms has become commonplace. However, the incorporation of AI assumes inflated l

Beyond Stigma-Integrating Neurobiology, Genetics, and Awareness Integration Theory in Addiction Recovery.

Addiction continues to be heavily stigmatized due to lingering misconceptions that frame substance use as a moral failing rather than a treatable neurobiological disorder. This stigma, when internalized, intensifies shame and obstructs recovery. Awareness Integration Theory, a multidisciplinary therapeutic model, addresses these internalized beliefs by identifying and integrating fragmented aspects of the self across thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and promotes self-awareness, emotional regulation, and cognitive restructuring, critical components in reducing shame and fostering resilience. This

Clinical and cognitive correlates of unsheltered status in homeless persons with psychotic disorders.

Homeless persons with psychosis are particularly susceptible to unsheltered homelessness, which includes living on the streets, in cars, and other places not meant for human habitation. Homeless persons with psychosis have distinct barriers to accessing care and comprise a high-need and hard-to-serve homeless subpopulation. Therefore, this study sought to understand unsheltered homelessness in persons with psychosis and its relationship to cognitive impairment, clinical symptoms, and community functioning, examined both categorically and dimensionally. This study included 76 homeless participa

Navigating Social Enactments in Psychoanalytic Group Therapy.

Addressing social enactments in group therapy requires integrating developmental theory with cultural identity dynamics. As social power dynamics emerge, the effectiveness of psychoanalytic group psychotherapy can be enhanced by modifying perspectives on transference, resistance, and the emotional transparency of the leader. This paper proposes theoretical and technical modifications to respond to repetitions of social inequities in the group process, including revised thinking about resistance analysis, the group agreement and the contact function. These changes aim to equip leaders to engage

Dissociative experience and cultural neuroscience: narrative, metaphor and mechanism.

Approaches to trance and possession in anthropology have tended to use outmoded models drawn from psychodynamic theory or treated such dissociative phenomena as purely discursive processes of attributing action and experience to agencies other than the self. Within psychology and psychiatry, understanding of dissociative disorders has been hindered by polemical "either/or" arguments: either dissociative disorders are real, spontaneous alterations in brain states that reflect basic neurobiological phenomena, or they are imaginary, socially constructed role performances dictated by interpersonal

Male-to-female and female-to-male transsexuals: a comparison.

Male-to-female and female-to-male transsexuals differed with respect to social, partnership, and sexual behavior, independently of whether they had had surgery. Female-to-male transsexuals more often had close ties to their parents and siblings, established stable partnerships more frequently solely with the same biological sex, and were more satisfied sexually. When they first consulted a physician about sex change, they were already more integrated socially. By the time the follow-up assessment took place, male-to-female transsexuals were as integrated socially as their female-to-male counte

Understanding happiness among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender populations through a data-driven path analysis in a Chinese sample: A three capitals model.

Studies on Happiness in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other sexual and gender diverse (SGD) populations are limited and have, in a majority of cases, been studied in Western populations. Prior popular frameworks to explain well-being in SGD populations include minority stress and Bourdieu's forms of capital, though few have integrated these frameworks. We leverage structural equation models, integrating these constructs to examine the relative influence of forms of capital and stigma on happiness among a large sample of culturally and linguistically Chinese SGD populations.
