Frequent Δ9- tetrahydrocannabinol exposure during adolescence impairs sociability in adult mice exposed to an aversive painful stimulus.

Early-life exposure to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), the intoxicating constituent of cannabis, may produce enduring neurochemical changes in brain structures involved in the regulation of sociality but it is still unclear how such changes influence social behavior later in life. In the present study, we exposed male mice to moderate daily doses of Δ9-THC (5 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) during adolescence (postnatal day, PND, 30 to 43) and, when animals reached adulthood (PND70), we assessed their performance in the three-chamber social interaction task before and 3 weeks after injection of the …

Enhancing the conversation skills of a boy with Asperger's Disorder through Social Stories and video modeling.

This study combined Social Stories with video modeling in an effort to enhance the conversation skills of a boy with Asperger's Disorder. Treatment consisted of two components: (a) observation of video taped Social Stories that included two adults modeling targeted conversational skills and (b) 5-min social interactions. A multiple baseline design across behaviors was used to evaluate the intervention and an increase in 2 out of 3 targeted conversation skills occurred. In addition, generalized behavior changes were observed. These findings provide support for including Social Stories as part o…

SPREAD, a framework and open-source R toolbox to quantify behavioural contagion.

Behavioural contagion, when one individual's behaviour increases the likelihood of similar behaviours in others, is a fundamental dimension of social interaction, yet its empirical quantification remains methodologically challenging. Distinguishing contagion from coincidental co-occurrence, resolving contagion across continuous latencies rather than within fixed windows, accounting for behavioural base rates, and incorporating social structure require integrated analytical solutions. We present SPREAD, a conceptual and statistical framework implemented as an open-source R toolbox for quantifyi…

Social-Ecological Resilience Moderates the Effectiveness of Avoidant Coping in Children Exposed to Adversity: An Exploratory Study in Lithuania.

BACKGROUND: Against the high prevalence of adverse childhood experiences in Lithuania, the government testified a lack of effective ways to address the problem. A crucial endeavor for intervention planners is to identify the risk and protective factors whose interaction may lead at risk children to achieve greater levels of functioning. Internal qualities and external resources can act independently or interactively to reduce the damaging effects of adversities, and to enhance resilience process. In particular, both coping strategies and social resources have been shown to have a consistent in

Allostatic load profiles, resilience, and psychosocial adaptation in young adults.

INTRODUCTION: Allostatic load (AL) reflects the cumulative physiological burden on the body, quantified using biomarkers across multiple systems. The current study identified latent AL profiles in young adults and examined whether resilience moderates associations between AL and depressive symptoms, social functioning, and role functioning. METHODS: A total of 165 nonclinical young adults (84 women; aged 19-30 years) provided data on 15 biomarkers spanning the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, oxidative stress, inflammatory-immune, lipid/glucose-metabolic, and renal systems, which were z-s

Peer and familial influences on the association between behavioral inhibition and trajectories of social anxiety symptoms across adolescence.

Behavioral inhibition (BI) is one of the most reliable predictors of social anxiety, and both peers and family members play a key role in shaping this association. In a sample of adolescents enriched for elevated BI and social anxiety symptoms, we examined (1) the moderating role of familial and close peer relationship qualities on associations between BI, concurrent social anxiety symptoms, and social anxiety symptom trajectories and (2) indirect effects of adolescent BI on social anxiety through close peer and familial relationship qualities. Furthermore, we examined sex differences in these

The method of social-geriatric examination is described. This type of examination by an ambulatory team takes place at the patient's home. The examination is firstly directed to the interactions in the human-environmental system. By means of a scheme as an aid the interactions can be analyzed. This analysis, how people are dealing with each other and with need for care and with care, precedes the analysis of the chain of interacting unfavourable conditions of social, mental and physical nature, which are responsible for the disturbance of the balance of the system. This disturbance is signaled

Social inference and social anxiety: evidence of a fear-congruent self-referential learning bias.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Fears of negative evaluation characterise social anxiety, and preferential processing of fear-relevant information is implicated in maintaining symptoms. Little is known, however, about the relationship between social anxiety and the process of inferring negative evaluation. The ability to use social information to learn what others think about one, referred to here as self-referential learning, is fundamental for effective social interaction. The aim of this research was to examine whether social anxiety is associated with self-referential learning. METHODS: 102 Fe…

The association of gait speed and self-reported difficulty walking with social isolation: A nationally-representative study.

BACKGROUND: Mobility assessments are commonly used among older adults as risk stratification for falls, preoperative function, frailty, and mortality. We determined if gait speed and self-reported difficulty walking are similarly associated with social isolation and loneliness, which are key markers of social well-being and linked to health outcomes. METHODS: We used 2015-2016 data from the National Social life Health and Aging Project (NSHAP), an in-person nationally-representative survey of 2640 community-dwelling adults ≥65 years old. We measured gait speed (timed 3-m walk: unable to walk,

Prevalence of male DNA on female worn undergarments. How small datasets may support robust opinions in activity level evaluative reporting.

In cases of sexual assault, the interpretation of biological traces on clothing, and particularly undergarments, may be complex. This is especially so when the complainant and defendant interact socially, for instance as (ex-)partners or by co-habitation. Here we present the results from a study where latent male DNA on female worn undergarments is recovered in four groups with different levels of male-female social interaction. The results conform to prior expectation, in that less interaction tend to result in less male DNA on undergarments. We explore the use of these experimental data for …

Interactions between peers with and without severe handicaps: dynamics of teacher intervention.

The impact of teachers' verbal interventions upon the dyadic social interactions between 40 elementary school children with severe mental retardation and their regular-education peers was investigated. All interactions occurred in the context of a structured program designed to facilitate social interactions. Half of the dyads were further instructed in specific cooperative play behavior. Students' and teachers' behaviors were coded. Results showed that the intervention initially positively affected various social play behavior; however, these effects diminished or reversed themselves as the i…

Maternal Exposure to Witnessed Social Defeat Stress Induces Sex-Specific Disruptions in Juvenile Social Play Behavior in Rats.

Stressing rodent dams during lactation can impair offspring neurodevelopment, altering behavioral and physiological outcomes. Witnessed social defeat stress (WSDS) is a paradigm in which a juvenile or adult rodent observes aggressive encounters, affecting stress physiology and behavior. We developed a novel early-life stress model by exposing lactating rat dams to WSDS and assessed its impact on juvenile social behavior and stress-related physiology. At postnatal day 24, same-sex, age-matched pairs of offspring were tested for social play by scoring pouncing (play initiation), pinning, chasing

Revisiting the relationship between impaired social functioning and psychopathology in schizophrenia.

Impaired social functioning is a common and well-known feature of schizophrenia. The relationship between psychopathology and social functioning is poorly understood, but substance use disorder is often suspected to negatively impact social functioning. In this empirical study, we explored the relationship between psychopathology and social functioning in two groups of patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders with impaired social functioning: homeless and domiciled patients. The patients were thoroughly examined for psychopathology, social functioning, and substance use disorder. The res

Social anxiety and Internet gaming disorder: The role of motives and metacognitions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In recent years, Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) has been recognized as a mental health problem. Although research has found that social anxiety, motives, the preference for online social interactions (POSI), and metacognitions about online gaming are independent predictors of IGD, less is known about their relative contribution to IGD. The aim of the current study was to model the relationship between social anxiety, motives, POSI, metacognitions about online gaming, and IGD. METHODS: Five hundred and forty three Italian gamers who play more than 7 h a week (mean age = 23…
