A Qualitative Exploration of the Functional, Social, and Emotional Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on People Who Use Drugs.

Since 2020, people who use drugs (PWUD) experienced heightened risks related to drug supply disruptions, contamination, overdose, social isolation, and increased stress. This study explored how the lives of PWUD changed in Philadelphia over a one-year period. Using semi-structured interviews with 20 participants in a Housing First, low-barrier medication for opioid use (MOUD) program in Philadelphia, the effects of the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic on the daily lives, resources, functioning, substance use, and treatment of PWUD were explored. Interviews were analyzed using a combination

A Point in the Heart: Concepts of Emotional Distress Among Albanian-Speaking Immigrants in Switzerland.

Cultural variability regarding concepts of distress for common mental disorders (CMD) has been reported extensively in cultural clinical psychology across the globe. However, little is known about illness narratives in social communities from Southeast Europe. The purpose of this paper is to identify cultural concepts of distress (CCDs) among Albanian-speaking immigrants in Switzerland and to integrate the findings into literature from other parts of the world. Twenty semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted using the Barts Explanatory Model Inventory (BEMI). A set of concepts was

Distracted on duty: A theory-based exploration of influences leading to mobile phone distracted riding among food delivery workers.

Using mobile phones while riding is a form of distracted riding that significantly elevates crash risk. Regrettably, the factors contributing to mobile phone use while riding (MPUWR) among food delivery riders remain under-researched. Addressing this literature gap, the current study employs the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model and various socio-economic factors to examine the determinants of MPUWR. The research incorporates data from 558 delivery workers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The study utilizes two analytical methods to empirically test the hypotheses, considering non-line

Brain gray and white matter abnormalities in preterm-born adolescents: A meta-analysis of voxel-based morphometry studies.

INTRODUCTION: Studies using voxel-based morphometry report variable and inconsistent abnormalities of gray matter volume (GMV) and white matter volume (WMV) in brains of preterm-born adolescents (PBA). In such circumstances a meta-analysis can help identify the most prominent and consistent abnormalities. METHOD: We identified 9 eligible studies by systematic search of the literature up to October 2017. We used Seed-based d Mapping to analyze GMV and WMV alterations between PBA and healthy controls. RESULTS: In the GMV meta-analysis, PBA compared to healthy controls showed: increased GMV in

Visual Information Routes in the Posterior Dorsal and Ventral Face Network Studied with Intracranial Neurophysiology and White Matter Tract Endpoints.

Occipitotemporal regions within the face network process perceptual and socioemotional information, but the dynamics and information flow between different nodes of this network are still debated. Here, we analyzed intracerebral EEG from 11 epileptic patients viewing a stimulus sequence beginning with a neutral face with direct gaze. The gaze could avert or remain direct, while the emotion changed to fearful or happy. N200 field potential peak latencies indicated that face processing begins in inferior occipital cortex and proceeds anteroventrally to fusiform and inferior temporal cortices, in

Relationships between dimensions of disability experienced by adults living with HIV: a structural equation model analysis.

As individuals age with HIV it is increasingly important to consider the health-related consequences of HIV and multiple morbidities, known as disability. We assessed relationships between four dimensions of disability among adults living with HIV. We conducted a structural equation modeling analysis using data from 913 participants in the Ontario HIV Treatment Network Cohort Study to determine relationships between four latent variables of disability in the Episodic Disability Framework: physical symptoms and impairments, mental health symptoms and impairments, difficulties with day-to-day ac

Design and psychometric validation of a social capital questionnaire for adults with end-stage chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis or hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: The effects of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) can spill over into a patient's social life. Social capital (SC) is a determinant of health that can enhance patients' health through support and resources. However, no questionnaire is currently available to measure SC in ESKD patients. This study aimed to design and validate a questionnaire to measure SC in ESKD adults undergoing dialysis or hemodialysis. METHODS: A mixed methods approach was used to generate the questionnaire and determine its content validity with a panel of nine experts and content validity index, face validity t

Barriers and opportunities to accessing social support in the transition from community to prison: a qualitative interview study with incarcerated individuals in Northern Norway.

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated individuals have poor mental health compared to the general population. Social support has a beneficial effect on mental health. The buffering model proposes that social support facilitates coping under stressful conditions, while the main effects model suggests that belonging to social networks and having positive social interactions are beneficial for mental health. Prisons are a highly interesting context for studying social support, as imprisonment is perceived as stressful and disrupts social relationships and the availability of support. This study aims to explor

Transcriptomic changes in the posterior pallium of male zebra finches associated with social niche conformance.

Animals plastically adjust their physiological and behavioural phenotypes to conform to their social environment-social niche conformance. The degree of sexual competition is a critical part of the social environment to which animals adjust their phenotypes, but the underlying genetic mechanisms are poorly understood. We conducted a study to investigate how differences in sperm competition risk affect the gene expression profiles of the testes and two brain areas (posterior pallium and optic tectum) in breeding male zebra finches (Taeniopygia castanotis). In this pre-registered study, we inves

Meta-analytic evidence for common and distinct neural networks associated with directly experienced pain and empathy for pain.

A growing body of evidence suggests that empathy for pain is underpinned by neural structures that are also involved in the direct experience of pain. In order to assess the consistency of this finding, an image-based meta-analysis of nine independent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) investigations and a coordinate-based meta-analysis of 32 studies that had investigated empathy for pain using fMRI were conducted. The results indicate that a core network consisting of bilateral anterior insular cortex and medial/anterior cingulate cortex is associated with empathy for pain. Activati

Abnormal network connectivity in frontotemporal dementia: evidence for prefrontal isolation.

INTRODUCTION: Degraded social function, disinhibition, and stereotypy are defining characteristics of frontotemporal dementia (FTD), manifesting in both the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and semantic dementia (SD) subtypes. Recent neuroimaging research also associates FTD with alterations in the brain's intrinsic connectivity networks. The present study explored the relationship between neural network connectivity and specific behavioral symptoms in FTD. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was employed to investigate neural network changes in b

Communication and Support-Focused Experiences and Needs of Young Adult Couples Coping With Cancer: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Cancer among young adult (YA) couples is a profoundly distressing experience, extracting a significant toll on YA couples' relationships (e.g., with partners, family, friends). It is well recognized that effective communication within social relationships is critical for fostering well-being among couples coping with cancer. Despite this, limited research exists focused on communication and support needs among YA couples. AIMS: Through qualitative semi-structured interviews, we explored the unique needs and experiences of YA couples with a focus on communication and support within

Mental health markers and protective factors in students with symptoms of physical pain across WEIRD and non-WEIRD samples - a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Studies conducted in Western societies have identified variables associated with chronic pain, but few have done so across cultures. Our study aimed to clarify the relationship between specific mental health markers (i.e., depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], perceived stress) as well as specific protective factors (i.e., social support and self-efficacy) related to physical pain among university students across non-WEIRD and WEIRD samples. METHOD: A total of 188 university students (131 women and 57 men) were included in the study. We used network analysis t

Cerebellar engagement in an action observation network.

The cerebellum has traditionally been viewed as a brain structure subserving skilled motor behaviors. However, the cerebellum might be involved not only in movement coordination, but also in action observation and understanding of others' actions. Veridical visual perception of human body motion is of immense importance for a variety of daily-life situations and for successful social interactions. Here, by combining visual psychophysics with a lesion analysis, we assessed visual sensitivity to human walking in patients with lesions to the left cerebellum. Patients with left lateral cerebellar

Network-based identification of central ADL and IADL items in older adults living alone.

BACKGROUND: The proportion of older adults living alone is rapidly increasing in Korea, making this population vulnerable to physical, psychological and social health problems. Functional decline in activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) is particularly pronounced among those living alone. This study applied network analysis to identify the structural relationships and central ADL/IADL items in older adults living alone. METHODS: We utilised the data from the 2022 Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging. Participants were 1,006 community-dwelling older
