Incorporating social determinants of health into agent-based models of HIV transmission: methodological challenges and future directions.

There is much focus in the field of HIV prevention research on understanding the impact of social determinants of health (e.g., housing, employment, incarceration) on HIV transmission and developing interventions to address underlying structural drivers of HIV risk. However, such interventions are resource-intensive and logistically challenging, and their evaluation is often limited by small sample sizes and short duration of follow-up. Because they allow for both detailed and large-scale simulations of counterfactual experiments, agent-based models (ABMs) can demonstrate the potential impact

The effect of critical thinking education on nursing students' critical thinking dispositions, social intelligence levels, and nursing education stress: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Developing critical thinking is important in nursing as it supports basic cognitive processes; however, students may have difficulty developing these skills due to high academic and clinical stress. Social intelligence and stress management are seen as critical for clinical success and quality of care. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a structured critical thinking education course on nursing students' critical thinking dispositions, social intelligence levels, and nursing education-related stress. METHODS: A quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest cont

Impaired Right Temporoparietal Junction-Hippocampus Connectivity in Schizophrenia and Its Relevance for Generating Representations of Other Minds.

Schizophrenia is associated with impaired and exaggerated Theory of Mind processes, pointing on alterations in generating a representation of another person's mind. Despite recent work on healthy subjects suggesting that a coupling between the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) and the hippocampus is relevant for building representations of others' intentions, the neural basis of related dysfunctions in patients with schizophrenia remains unclear. Therefore, we used structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging together with a modified prisoner's dilemma game to test the hypotheses,

The field of medical anthropology in Social Science & Medicine.

Conceptually and methodologically, medical anthropology is well-positioned to support a "big-tent" research agenda on health and society. It fosters approaches to social and structural models of health and wellbeing in ways that are critically reflective, cross-cultural, people-centered, and transdisciplinary. In this review article, we showcase these four main characteristics of the field, as featured in Social Science & Medicine over the last fifty years, highlighting their relevance for an international and interdisciplinary readership. First, the practice of critical inquiry in ethnographi

Functions and sources of perceived social support among children affected by HIV/AIDS in China.

While the relationship between perceived social support (PSS) and psychosocial well-being has been well documented in the global literature, existing studies also suggest the existence of multiple domains in definition and measurement of PSS. The current study, utilizing data from 1299 rural children affected by HIV/AIDS in central China, examines the relative importance of PSS functional measures (informational/emotional, material/tangible, affectionate, and social interaction) and PSS structural measures (family/relatives, teachers, friends, and significant others) in predicting psychosocial

Changes in the development of subcortical structures in autism spectrum disorder.

Many studies have reported abnormalities in the volume of subcortical structures in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and many of these change with age. However, most studies that have investigated subcortical structures were cross-sectional and did not accurately segment the subcortical structures. In this study, we used volBrain, an automatic and reliable quantitative analysis tool, and a longitudinal design to examine developmental changes in the volume of subcortical structures in ASD, and quantified the relation between subcortical volume development and clinical correlates

Eating disorders: when social rank perceptions are shaped by early shame experiences.

OBJECTIVES: Recent research has shown that early adverse experiences can be an important risk factor for eating disorders. However, the role of early shame memories and how they are structured as traumatic and central memories to self-identity in eating disorders has never been investigated. This study explores the phenomenology of shame memories involving attachment figures and other agents from the wider social domain in patients with eating disorders, and examines the relationship between their traumatic and centrality features, social comparison based on physical appearance, and the severi

Utilising qualitative data for social network analysis in disaster research: opportunities, challenges, and an illustration.

An abundance of unstructured and loosely structured data on disasters exists and can be analysed using network methods. This paper overviews the use of qualitative data in quantitative social network analysis in disaster research. It discusses two types of networks, each with a relevant major topic in disaster research-that is, (i) whole network approaches to emergency management networks and (ii) personal network approaches to the social support of survivors-and four usable forms of qualitative data. This paper explains five opportunities afforded by these approaches, revolving around their f

The role of whole network analysis in understanding health behaviours: a systematic review of smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, and diet.

BACKGROUND: Health behaviours such as smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, and dietary habits are not only individual choices but are influenced by social interactions and relational contexts. Recently, Whole Network Analysis (WNA) has become a powerful methodological tool to explore how these behaviours spread and become established within social systems. Unlike egocentric approaches, which focus on individuals' personal networks, WNA captures the entire structure of social relations within a defined population. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of empirical studies applying WNA

Exploring adolescent academic stress in the digital and urban age: a mixed-methods study from CIT to checklist validation.

INTRODUCTION: In recent decades, middle and high school students have been experiencing increasing levels of academic stress. The reason may be rapid urbanization and the widespread use of the Internet, which have expanded students' environments from the confines of family and school to the open community and cyber world. Greater exposure to academic information and social interactions may contribute to heightened stress levels. However, the underlying mechanisms remain underexplored. Furthermore, the current taxonomy of academic stress conflates self-stress with stress arising from social eve

"Housing Insecurity Seems to Almost Go Hand in Hand with Being Trans": Housing Stress among Transgender and Gender Non-conforming Individuals in New Orleans.

Housing is an important social determinant of physical and mental health. Transgender and gender non-conforming individuals (T/GNCI) face a unique constellation of discrimination and compromised social services, putting them at risk for housing insecurity, homelessness, and its associated public health concerns. This study explores housing insecurity among T/GNCI in New Orleans, LA, where the infrastructural landscape is marked by an underinvestment in housing stock and disaster capitalism. In-depth interviews were conducted with T/GNCI (n = 17) living in New Orleans, identified through purpos

Social cognition in idiopathic generalized epilepsies and potential neuroanatomical correlates.

Social cognition allows us to elaborate mental representations of social relationships and use them appropriately in a social environment. One of its main attributes is the so-called Theory of Mind (ToM), which consists of the ability to attribute beliefs, intentions, emotions, and feelings to self and others. Investigating social cognition may help understand the poor social outcome often experienced by persons with Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsies (IGE), who otherwise present with normal intelligence. In recent years, several studies have addressed social cognition in subjects with focal ep
