A Standardbred racehorse was presented for exercise intolerance, weight loss, pyrexia and facial deformity. Radiography and ultrasonography revealed periostitis and regional soft tissue swelling of maxillary bones. Computed tomography excluded any dental or sinus origin of these abnormalities. Further deformities on distal limbs and skin lesions appeared during hospitalization. Radiography identified bilateral periostitis and soft tissue swelling in the distal radius and metatarsal bones, as observed in the head, suggestive of hypertrophic osteopathy (HO). Skin biopsies revealed granulomatous

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary abscesses may be cavitary lesions on thoracic radiographs and computed tomography (CT).
CASE REPORT: A 26-day-old, cross-breed lamb presented for respiratory distress despite procaine penicillin treatment. Thoracic radiographs revealed several pulmonary ovoid thin-walled gas and soft tissue opacity structures. CT showed that these gas-filled structures enclosed mildly contrast enhancing soft tissue attenuating material and surrounded the lobar bronchus to the right middle and caudal lung lobes. Imaging revealed pulmonary cavitary lesions, and chronic pulmonary abscesses

Malakoplakia is a rare disease. Clinical presentation is non-specific, making its diagnosis an incidental finding on histopathological analysis. The aim of this case report is to describe a patient diagnosed with colon, renal and soft tissue malacoplakia mimicking a locally advanced colorectal cancer. A 75-year-old man was admitted due to intense abdominal pain. No relevant findings at the physical examination. Computed tomography showed parietal thickening of the descending colon with left kidney, iliopsoas muscle and retroperitoneum involvement. An elevated blood serum creatinine, elevated g

Fournier gangrene is an emergency condition that is associated with a high mortality rate. It is defined as a rapidly progressing infective necrotizing fasciitis of the perineal, perianal, and genital regions. Early diagnosis, broad-spectrum antibiotic coverage, and adequate surgical debridement are crucial and lead to better prognosis and patient survival. There is increasing utilization of computed tomography (CT) in the initial evaluation of Fournier gangrene. CT can confirm the diagnosis in equivocal cases, determine the source of infection, and evaluate the disease extent. In this pictori

Recent metal artifact reduction techniques in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have sparked a new aera in visualization of the peri-implant region and assessment of failing orthopaedic hardware. Modes of failure after total hip arthroplasty can be classified into four broad categories: osseous abnormalities, implant instability and dislocation, implant-associated synovitis, and soft tissue abnormalities. Although MRI is complementary to plain radiography and computed tomography to diagnose the first two categories, it is paramount to investigate the complications related to the synovium and so

Leiomyosarcomas of soft tissue are the rare tumors and the retroperitoneum is the most common site involved. We report a case of primary leiomyosarcoma of the peritoneal cavity which clinically presented with suprapubic, freely mobile, nontender mass which measured 10×10 cm in size. Contrast enhanced computed tomography revealed well defined heterogenous hypodense solid cystic mass. The mass was surgically excised out in its entirety. The histopathological examination revealed spindle cells arranged in alternating fascicles having pleomorphic nuclei, indistinct margin and eosinophilic cytoplas

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is the most common soft-tissue sarcoma occurring in adults. This entity was first described by O'Brian and Stout in 1964. Apart from the soft-tissues, this tumor has been reported to occur in all other parts of the body including bone. It has male predilection and is usually noticed in the fifth to seventh decades of life. It commonly affects extremities and retroperitoneum, whereas involvement of the head and neck region is comparatively rare. However, when the head and neck region is affected, the most common sites are the maxillary sinus and the nasal ca

Obstructive jaundice caused by tuberculous lymphadenitis is a rare manifestation of tuberculosis (TB), with 15 cases having been reported in Korea. We experienced a case of obstructive jaundice caused by pericholedochal tuberculous lymphadenitis in a 30-year-old man. The patient's initial serum total bilirubin level was 21.1 mg/dL. Abdominal computed tomography revealed narrowing of the bile duct by a conglomerated soft-tissue mass involving the main portal vein. Abrupt obstruction of the common bile duct was observed on cholangiography. Pathologic analysis of a ultrasonography-guided biopsy s

A female spayed domestic longhair cat aged 3 years and 9 months was referred for investigation of regurgitation and weight loss of 2 months' duration. Thoracic radiographs revealed a soft tissue mass within the cranial mediastinum causing focal oesophageal dilation. Computed tomography confirmed a contrast-enhancing mass located cranial to the heart base, possibly originating from the oesophagus. Exploratory thoracotomy revealed an intramural soft tissue mass within the ventral oesophageal wall. Surgical excision of the mass and reconstruction of the oesophagus around an oesophageal tube was p

A 5-year-old male cross-breed dog with chronic rhinosinusitis was presented. Computed tomography (CT) revealed opacities consistent with soft tissue or fluid in the left nasal cavity and frontal sinus. A diagnosis of chronic rhinosinusitis with myxomatous polyps was based on the histology of biopsy samples, so prednisolone treatment was administered for 1 month. Although the clinical signs slightly improved, no changes were observed on the CT images. At 8 months after the initial presentation, the dog was treated with antivascular photodynamic therapy (PDT) using benzoporphyrin derivative mono

To determine computed tomographic (CT) imaging characteristics of retropharygeal edema, we reviewed CT images in 18 patients with head and neck tumors. Retropharyngeal edema spread craniocaudally between soft palate and upper half of thyroid cartilage in all patients. No edema fluid extended above soft palate and below thyroid cartilage. Horizontally, it spread symmetrically in ten and asymmetrically in eight patients. Predominance in asymmetrical retropharyngeal edema was found on the same side as that of unilateral predominance both in lymph nodes enlargement and jugular vein stenosis/occlus

Two cases of intralabyrinthine schwannoma were studied with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. On CT scans, a soft-tissue mass was identified in the round window niche in both cases. Widening of the basilar turn of the cochlea and characteristic erosion of the promontory were noticed in one case. Preoperative MR imaging (performed in only one case) revealed a soft-tissue mass in the labyrnth, extending into the round window niche. Findings at CT and MR imaging are discussed, and a differential diagnosis is given. The literature is reviewed. The authors' findings sugg

Because it has been suggested that patients with obstructive sleep apnea have a narrower pharyngeal airway than normal persons, we performed lateral fluoroscopy and computed tomographic (CT) scans of the pharynx in patients with this syndrome. Fluoroscopy in 6 sleeping patients showed that the obstruction always began during inspiration when the soft palate touched the tongue and posterior pharyngeal wall. The CT scans in 9 awake subjects demonstrated that the narrowest section of the airway in patients and in control subjects was the region posterior to the soft palate. The cross-sectional ar

Crystal arthropathies of the hand encompass a wide spectrum of disorders characterized by the deposition of various crystals within joints and soft tissues, often leading to inflammatory and degenerative changes. Due to their ability to mimic other rheumatic diseases, accurate diagnosis is challenging and relies heavily on imaging. This review highlights the pathophysiologic features and typical manifestations of key crystal arthropathies-calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition, gout, hydroxyapatite deposition disease, oxalosis, amyloidosis, and rare mimickers such as ochronosis-focusing on t

A 29-year-old female patient was referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Taleghani Hospital of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Science, Tehran, Iran, in 2019, complaining of increased volume and pain in the posterior mandibular region. Cone-beam computed tomography and multislice computed tomography were performed, and an incisional biopsy was done. The histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of Odontogenic Keratocyst (OKC). Surgical treatment was performed with marsupialization. After a year of follow-up, the resultant small-sized cyst was curetted, a

AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the present paper is to determine the diagnostic features of the rare presentation of osteochondroma in the mandible. The unusual aspect in this case is that the diagnosis was not established with cone beam computer tomography, which is a commonly used radiographic technique in dentistry, but with the use of ultrasonography.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Ultrasonography is very useful for initial examinations, avoiding patient exposure to additional radiation and setting the diagnosis in debatable soft tissue involvement of various lesions. In the presented case, even though

An accessory spleen refers to single or multiple splenic tissues that appear outside the normal spleen position and have structures and functions similar to those of a normal spleen. We herein present a rare case of a 31-year-old woman who was hospitalized because of a 14-year history of sudden left upper abdominal pain after running. Abdominal computed tomography suggested a large soft tissue mass at the left renal hilum surrounded by several enlarged lymph nodes, which was totally different from computed tomography scanning of normal accessory spleen. The mass was resected by robot-assisted

Intussusception is rare in adults and it is difficult to diagnose on admission. We present the case of a 43-year-old woman with the chief complaint of nausea and upper abdominal pain. Abdominal multidetector-row computed tomography showed ileo-ileal small bowel intussusception with an intraluminal soft tissue mass with attenuation numbers suggestive of a lipoma. The patient was treated with a laparoscopic-assisted extracorporeal partial resection of the small bowel including ileal lipoma, followed by a functional end-to-end anastomosis. Histologic diagnosis of the resected tumor, 2.4×2.0×2.0 c

We investigated the skull of a juvenile living in Southern Germany between 1400 and 1800 A.D. A remarkable hemifacial microsomia led to further detailed computed tomographic examination especially of the petrous bone revealing a total bony atresia of the external auditory canal as well as distinct anomalies of the middle ear on the same side. The combination of these findings strongly suggests the diagnosis of Goldenhar syndrome. This very heterogeneous syndrome affects primarily aural, ocular, oral and mandibular development, whereby the constellation of anomalies indicate their origin at app
