Effect of hyperextension of the neck (rose position) on cerebral blood oxygenation in patients who underwent cleft palate reconstructive surgery: prospective cohort study using near-infrared spectroscopy.

OBJECTIVES: To facilitate the best approach during cleft palate surgery, children are positioned with hyperextension of the neck. Extensive head extension may induce intraoperative cerebral ischemia if collateral flow is insufficient. To evaluate and monitor the effect of cerebral blood flow on cerebral tissue oxygenation, near-infrared spectroscopy has proved to be a valuable method. The aim of this study was to evaluate and quantify whether hyperextension affects the cerebral tissue oxygenation in children during cleft palate surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study included c

Acute changes in cortical activation during active ankle movement after whole-body vibration for spasticity in hemiplegic legs of stroke patients: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Background: A recent study revealed that whole-body vibration (WBV) tends to decrease spasticity in stroke-related hemiplegic legs. However, acute changes in cortical activation after WBV are unclear. Objective: To examine whether WBV induces acute changes in sensorimotor cortical activation in patients with stroke-related hemiplegic legs. Methods: Eleven stroke patients (mean age 52.6 [SD 15.4] years; median time after stroke 3 [25th and 75th percentiles; 3 and 10.5, respectively] months) participated in a comparative before-and-after intervention trial. Six healthy adults were also studied. WB

Quantification of the severity of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury in a neonatal preclinical model using measurements of cytochrome-c-oxidase from a miniature broadband-near-infrared spectroscopy system.

We describe the development of a miniaturized broadband near-infrared spectroscopy system (bNIRS), which measures changes in cerebral tissue oxyhemoglobin ( [ HbO 2 ] ) and deoxyhemoglobin ([HHb]) plus tissue metabolism via changes in the oxidation state of cytochrome-c-oxidase ([oxCCO]). The system is based on a small light source and a customized mini-spectrometer. We assessed the instrument in a preclinical study in 27 newborn piglets undergoing transient cerebral hypoxia-ischemia (HI). We aimed to quantify the recovery of the HI insult and estimate the severity of the injury. The recover

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and vagus somatosensory evoked potentials (VSEP) in the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease: rationale, design, methods, and first baseline data of the Vogel study.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and vagus somatosensory evoked potentials (VSEP) show deviant patterns in subjects with Alzheimer's disease (AD) compared to healthy controls. We now aimed at testing the predictive value of these methods in the early diagnosis of AD. The Vogel study is a prospective, observational, long-term follow-up study with three time points of investigation within 6 years. Residents of the city of Würzburg born between 1936 and 1941 were recruited. Every participant underwent physical, psychiatric, and laboratory examinations, and performed an intense neurop

Feasibility of combining functional near-infrared spectroscopy with electroencephalography to identify chronic stroke responders to cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation-a computational modeling and portable neuroimaging methodological study.

Feasibility of portable neuroimaging of cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (ctDCS) effects on the cerebral cortex has not been investigated vis-à-vis cerebellar lobular electric field strength. We studied functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in conjunction with electroencephalography (EEG) to measure changes in the brain activation at the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the sensorimotor cortex (SMC) following ctDCS as well as virtual reality-based balance training (VBaT) before and after ctDCS treatment in 12 hemiparetic chronic stroke survivors. We performed general linea

Establishment of optimal exercise therapy using near-infrared spectroscopy monitoring of tissue muscle oxygenation after therapeutic angiogenesis for patients with critical limb ischemia: A multicenter, randomized, controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is a potentially life-threatening condition that involves severely reduced blood flow to the peripheral arteries due to arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO) of the limbs or a similar condition. CLI patients must undergo revascularization to avoid amputation of the lower limbs and improve their survival prognosis. However, the outcomes of conventional surgical revascularization or endovascular therapy are inadequate; therefore, establishing further effective treatment methods is an urgent task. We perform therapeutic angiogenesis using autologous bone marro

Stepwise regression of non-culprit lipid-rich plaque observed using serial near-infrared spectroscopy-intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomographic measurements after aggressive cholesterol-lowering treatment: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Lipid-rich plaques (LRP) in the non-culprit lesions (NCL) in patients with the acute coronary syndrome may trigger lesion-related, adverse cardiovascular events. Aggressive lipid-lowering therapy may stabilize LRP; however, the times of stabilization remain undefined. CASE SUMMARY: A 60-year-old man presented with unstable angina. Coronary angiography revealed a severely stenotic lesion (culprit lesion) in the left descending artery, and another non-obstructive lesion in the distal left main trunk artery. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) imaging showed LRP with a maximum lipid co

Evaluation of static ulcer on lower extremities using wireless wearable near-infrared spectroscopy device: Effect of deep venous thrombosis on TRiggered Angiography Non-Contrast-Enhanced sequence magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Venous leg ulcers, or static leg ulcers, are chronic wounds associated with ambulatory venous hypertension of the lower extremities as a consequence of venous valve reflux, reduce venous capacitance, poor calf venous pump, heart failure, or in conjunction with venous obstruction. A static ulcer with venous thrombosis in a pelvic or thigh vein responds favorably to anticoagulation agents. However, anticoagulation is less effective and even harmful when ambulatory venous hypertension has another cause such as venous reflux, poorly heart function, and poor calf venous pump. METHOD: T

A low-cost, wireless near-infrared spectroscopy device detects the presence of lower extremity atherosclerosis as measured by computed tomographic angiography and characterizes walking impairment in peripheral artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) who experience intermittent claudication report a range of symptoms. Patients with symptoms other than classically described intermittent claudication may be at the highest risk for functional decline and mobility loss. Therefore, technologies allowing for characterization of PAD severity are desirable. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) allows for measurements of muscle heme oxygen saturation (StO2) during exercise. We hypothesized lower extremities affected by PAD would exhibit distinct NIRS profiles as measured by a low-cost, wireless

A Case Report of Changes in Regional Cortical Blood Volume and Oxygenation During Induction of General Anaesthesia with Sevoflurane Versus Propofol in a Paediatric Moyamoya Disease, Evaluated by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

A safe induction method of general anaesthesia for paediatric moyamoya disease patients has not been fully established. We had the opportunity to administer general anaesthesia twice to a two-year-old girl diagnosed with moyamoya disease. We used different induction methods for general anaesthesia at each session, i.e. slow induction with sevoflurane and rapid induction with propofol, and were able to evaluate changes in her left regional cortical blood volume (rCBV) and oxygenation (rCBO) during both anaesthesia inductions using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The mean change value of tota

Evaluation of Four Methods to Determine the Degree of Cure of Melamine-Based Direct Pressed Laminates on Particleboards: Two Improved UV Absorption Methods, the Kiton Test, and Near Infrared Spectroscopy.

Despite its importance, the determination of the degree of cure of melamine-based laminates often relies on tests with limited accuracy and validity. Undercured surfaces may suffer insufficient resistance to scratching and heat as well as substandard surface quality. Overcured melamine surfaces tend to crack and entail the inefficient utilization of the press-the panels could have been pressed for a shorter time. Four methods to determine the degree of cure of a melamine resin coating under industrial conditions were compared: the Kiton test, the most common method in industry, Near Infrared S

500 ml of blood loss does not decrease non-invasive tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) as measured by near infrared spectroscopy - A hypothesis generating pilot study in healthy adult women.

BACKGROUND: The goal when resuscitating trauma patients is to achieve adequate tissue perfusion. One parameter of tissue perfusion is tissue oxygen saturation (StO2), as measured by near infrared spectroscopy. Using a commercially available device, we investigated whether clinically relevant blood loss of 500 ml in healthy volunteers can be detected by changes in StO2 after a standardized ischemic event. METHODS: We performed occlusion of the brachial artery for 3 minutes in 20 healthy female blood donors before and after blood donation. StO2 and total oxygenated tissue hemoglobin (O2Hb) were
