Beyond Neuropsychiatric Manifestations of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Focus on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Alexithymia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To deepen the comprehension of the role of specific psychological conditions in the pathogenesis and in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Specifically, the present comprehensive review aims at examining the association between SLE, alexithymia (AT)-a personality construct referring to the inability to identify, describe, and express sensations, emotions, and physical state-and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), to infer potential biological relationships between these psychopathological issues and disease course, and to draw up a research agenda on gra

Intranasal temperature-sensitive hydrogels of cannabidiol inclusion complex for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disease that seriously affects brain function. Currently, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are used to treat PTSD clinically but have decreased efficiency and increased side effects. In this study, nasal cannabidiol inclusion complex temperature-sensitive hydrogels (CBD TSGs) were prepared and evaluated to treat PTSD. Mice model of PTSD was established with conditional fear box. CBD TSGs could significantly improve the spontaneous behavior, exploratory spirit and alleviate tension in open field box, relieve anxiety and tensi

Trauma-focused psychotherapies for post-traumatic stress disorder: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Meta-analytic reviews suggest similar outcomes across trauma-focused psychotherapies for adults with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, this conclusion may be premature due to suboptimal statistical-review methodologies. Network meta-analysis (NMA) allows a detailed rank-ordering of the efficacy of established psychotherapy interventions derived from indirect evidence as well as results from direct head-to-head comparisons. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the efficacy and attrition rates of psychotherapy interventions for PTSD by applying NMA. METHODS: We searche

Post-traumatic stress disorder in refugee minors in an outpatient care center: prevalence and associated factors.

Due to their likelihood for experiencing a number of traumatic events, refugee minors have an increased risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the prevalence of PTSD in refugee children varies widely between studies, and it remains somewhat unclear what factors increase children's risk of PTSD. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of PTSD in a clinical outpatient sample of refugee minors, and to evaluate the association of different risk factors with a PTSD diagnosis. N = 417 refugee minors were recruited from an outpatient clinical center in Hamburg, Germany.

Translational relevance of behavioral, neural, and electroencephalographic profiles in a mouse model of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe, long-term psychological disorder triggered by distressing events. The neural basis and underlying mechanisms of PTSD are not completely understood. Therefore, it is important to determine the pathology of PTSD using reliable animal models that mimic the symptoms of patients. However, the lack of evidence on the clinical relevance of PTSD animal models makes it difficult to interpret preclinical studies from a translational perspective. In this study, we performed a comprehensive screening of the behavioral, neuronal, glial, and electroencephal

Cost-effectiveness of 'screen-and-treat' interventions for post-traumatic stress disorder following major incidents.

OBJECTIVES: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is commonly experienced in the aftermath of major incidents such as terrorism and pandemics. Well-established principles of response include effective and scalable treatment for individuals affected by PTSD. In England, such responses have combined proactive outreach, screening and evidence-based interventions (a 'screen-and-treat' approach), but little is known about its cost-effectiveness. The objective of this paper is to report the first systematic attempt to assess the cost-effectiveness of this approach. METHODS: A decision modelling ana

Heartbeat evoked potentials in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder: an unaltered neurobiological regulation system?

BACKGROUND: Early life maltreatment is a risk factor for psychiatric disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Post-traumatic stress disorder is a severe and heterogeneous disorder with fluctuating states of emotional over- and undermodulation, including hypervigilance, dissociation, and emotion regulation deficits. The perception and regulation of emotions have been linked to interoception, the cortical representation and sensing of inner bodily processes. Although first therapeutic approaches targeting bodily sensations have been found effective in patients with PTSD, and d

Research on the frequency of post-traumatic stress disorder in healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: It is highly probable that the COVID-19 outbreak, one of the most severe pandemics to which humanity has been exposed, will promote post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a serious mental illness that decreases quality of life and functionality of healthcare workers (HCWs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. AIMS: This study aims to research the frequency of PTSD in HCWs who are working in a central pandemic hospital, during the COVID-19 outbreak. METHODS: In total, 300 HCWs were included in the study. Diagnosis of PTSD was made according to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, and the s

Post-traumatic stress disorder increases pain sensitivity by reducing descending noradrenergic and serotoninergic modulation.

Exposure to stress might influence pain sensitivity; however, little is known about whether post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-like symptoms alter pain sensitivity and how it can happen. Male rats were exposed to the inescapable footshock paired with either social isolation or a control condition (not exposed to footshock but subjected to social isolation). After 7, 14, or 21 days, memory retention was evaluated. In the following three days, animals underwent the following tests: open-field, social interaction and formalin tests. Another group of animals were subjected to the object recogni

Obstetric factors associated with postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder after spontaneous vaginal birth.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine whether there is an association between clinical practices carried out during spontaneous vaginal birth (SVB), or clinical situations that arise during vaginal birth, and the incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: A cross-sectional study with 839 puerperal women in Spain was conducted. The Perinatal Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Questionnaire (PPQ) was administered online. The relationship between the risk of postpartum PTSD and various intrapartum complications was studied in addition to practices or procedures performed during

Volume and shape analysis of the Hippocampus and amygdala in veterans with traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic stress disorder.

There is a need to improve the understanding of the neurobiological underpinnings of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Individuals with TBI experience comorbidities such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with considerable symptom overlap including depression and hyperarousal, confounding the ability to identify specific TBI-related brain changes. The aims of the current study were to investigate hippocampal and amygdalar volumes in Veterans with TBI with (TBI + PTSD, n = 32) and without (TBI - PTSD, n = 25) PTSD. Shape analysis was employed to reveal any relationship between the hippocampus

Use of a modified mandibular splint to reduce nocturnal symptoms in persons with post-traumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Based on a series of clinical observations that a thicker mandibular splint than that commonly used to treat bruxism and related craniomandibular myofascial pain reduced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) nocturnal symptomatology (sleep disruptions, headaches, and nightmares), this study of 100 PTSD participants was undertaken to systematically establish 'proof of concept' of the therapeutic effectiveness of this modified splinting procedure. METHODS: Following the fabrication of splints thicker than those conventionally used, the effectiveness of this new procedure used by dent

Reducing Shame, Promoting Dignity: A Model for the Primary Prevention of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) refers to the complex psychological and psychosocial sequelae caused by prolonged interpersonal abuse. Contemporary approaches to CPTSD are dominated by individualized psychological interventions that are long term and costly. However, accumulating evidence indicates that CPTSD is a high prevalence mental illness implicated in significant social problems, with a pattern of lateral and intergenerational transmission that impacts on already disadvantaged communities. Consequently, there have been calls for a public health model for the prevention of

Efficacy of Psychological Intervention for Children with Concurrent Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are common conditions following motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). Mild TBI and PTSD not only share similar features but may also coexist and interact. Nonetheless, research on psychotherapeutic interventions for PTSD in patients with a history of mTBI, particularly regarding pediatric populations, is limited. The present study compared the efficacy of the prolonged exposure treatment protocol for children and adolescents (PE-A) with PTSD and mTBI (n = 16) versus PTSD alone (n = 21); treatment commenced at least 3 months

Altered functional connectivity of the amygdala and its subregions in typhoon-related post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: New evidence suggests that the centromedial amygdala (CMA) and the basolateral amygdala (BLA) play different roles in threat processing. Our study aimed to investigate the effects of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on the functional connectivity (FC) of the amygdala and its subregions. METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with typhoon-related PTSD, 33 trauma-exposed controls (TEC), and 30 healthy controls (HC) were scanned with a 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging scanner. The FCs of the BLA, the CMA, and the amygdala as a whole were examined using a seed-based approach
