[Bisphosphonate and osteonecrosis of the jaw.].

Marx first reported avascular osteonecrosis of the jaw(ONJ)in oncology patients who had used high dose intravenous bisphosphonate(BP)at 2003. Ruggiero et al. also reported BP-related ONJ in osteoporosis patients who had used low dose oral BP at 2004. Since tooth extraction was considered one of risk factors for ONJ, discontinuation of BP before and after tooth extraction was recommended as one of preventive strategy for ONJ, especially in osteoporosis patients. However, recent studies showed that discontinuation of BP did not prevent ONJ, but increased the occurrence of adverse events such as

Three-dimensional modeling and finite element analysis in treatment planning for orthodontic tooth movement.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to demonstrate the potential of 3-dimensional modeling and finite element analysis as clinical tools in treatment planning for orthodontic tooth movement. High stresses in bone and miniscrew implants under load can cause fractures and trauma for orthodontic patients, and treatments are typically planned by using clinical experience or simple 2-dimensional radiographs. METHODS: Anatomically accurate 3-dimensional models reconstructed from cone-beam computed tomography scans were used to simulate the retraction of a single-rooted mandibular canine w

Follow Up on Simple (Closed) Extraction of Fractured Maxillary Canine Teeth in Domestic Ferrets (Mustela putorius furo).

Fractured canine teeth (especially maxillary canine teeth) are common in domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo). We evaluated (detailed oral/dental and radiographic examination under general anesthesia) 18 domestic ferrets affected by 23 complicated crown fractures of periodontally healthy permanent maxillary canine teeth over a 2-year period. Average age of the ferrets at the time of diagnosis was 2.6 years. Only three teeth were discolored on clinical examination. Out of 23 teeth, 22 were radiographically evaluated. No radiographic evidence of endodontic disease was observed in 11/22 canin

Coronectomy of two neighbouring ankylosed mandibular teeth--a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Intentional partial odontectomy or coronectomy is primarily advocated in situations with intimate relationships between the roots of the tooth indicated for extraction and the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). The aim of this report was to present a patient with two neighbouring infraoccluded teeth in the right mandible indicated for extraction prior to prosthetic rehabilitation, which were coronectomied as to prevent injuring of the IAN and causing iatrogenic fracture of the mandibular body. CASE REPORT: Coronectomy of both teeth was performed as recommended in the literature. The

Surgical removal of a dislocated lower third molar from the condyle region: case report.

INTRODUCTION: Migration of dislocated lower third molar into the condylar region is quite rare. Attention should be taken to avoid condyle fracture. METHODS: 49-year-old patient had an ectopic lower left third molal in the condylar region, suffered from a submandibular and masseter space abscess. Removal of the molar via intraoral approach was chosen avoiding facial nerve branches and unnecessary scar formation. Coronoid process is removed, the tooth is separated and removed. The defect is filled with iliac cancellous bone. The coronoid process was fixed as a cover with a resorbable plate and

Differences in bonding to acid-etched or Er:YAG-laser-treated enamel and dentin surfaces.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Er:YAG (erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) lasers have been effective in the removal of dental tissues. It has been suggested that they are also useful for preparing dental surfaces for adhesion, but results to date have been controversial. PURPOSE: This study compared the tensile strength of bracket-tooth bonds obtained after preparation of the surface for adhesion (dentin or enamel) by conventional acid-etching or by Er:YAG laser etching and investigated microstructure of resin-tooth interfaces using the 2 procedures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty healthy human pre

Comprehensive interdisciplinary management of multiple combination injuries in permanent maxillary anterior teeth in an adolescent patient.

Traumatic dental injuries are prevalent among children and adolescents, especially those between 6 and 12 years of age with varying degrees … on injuries, including avulsion, in an early adolescent female child, concurrently with complicated tooth fractures of maxillary anterior teeth and its 5 year sequelae. The multidisciplinary management of the traumatised teeth involved endodontic therapy and mesialisation of teeth, resulting in a successful aesthetic reconstruction. This report highlights the pro …

Combined treatment of surgical extrusion and crown lengthening procedure for severe crown-root fracture of a growing patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Preservation of a healthy periodontium is critical for the long-term success of restored teeth. In cases of extensive caries, tooth fracture, inadequate crown length, and increased esthetic demands, the restorative margins need to be placed apical to the gingival margin. Violation of the biological width due to dental trauma frequently appears in clinical practice. There are three treatment options for preserving biological width and the ferrule effect: crown lengthening, orthodontic extrusion, and surgical extrusion. This case report describes the surgical intervention and fixed p

Longevity of frictional telescopic crowns in the severely reduced dentition: 3-year results of a longitudinal prospective clinical study.

OBJECTIVES: The longevity of frictional telescopic crowns (FTC) in severely reduced dentitions with 1 to 3 remaining teeth per jaw has not yet been studied prospectively and exclusively. Aims of this study were to estimate risks of telescope loss and abutment tooth loss and to determine abutment tooth mobility over time. METHOD AND MATERIALS: A total of 74 patients with severely reduced dentitions received 82 telescopic removable partial dentures (TRPDs) retained with 173 FTCs. Dentures were reexamined after 1 week and 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months. Tooth mobility was monitored with Per

Can fiber placement influence the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth with indirect partial ceramic restorations? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Restoring endodontically treated teeth with indirect partial ceramic restorations poses biomechanical challenges associated with the compromised tooth structure, and the potential role of fiber reinforcement in improving fracture resistance remains unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine whether reinforcing the endodontically treated tooth structures with fiber ribbons or short fiber-reinforced resin composites (SFRCs) increases the fracture resistance of indirect partial ceramic restorations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A da

Regenerative Strategies for Traumatic Dental Injuries in Craniofacial Trauma: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic dental injuries are an important component of craniofacial and dentoalveolar trauma and may compromise oral function, facial aesthetics, alveolar support, and long-term tooth preservation, particularly in young patients. They can lead to disruption of pulpal blood supply, pulp necrosis, and periapical tissue damage; in immature permanent teeth with open apices and thin root walls, infection control must be balanced against preservation of further root development. METHODS: Within the broader context of craniofacial trauma, this narrative review summarizes the indications

Application of the 10 Keys Checklist and Partial Extraction Techniques to Optimize Esthetic Outcomes for Adjacent Implants in the Esthetic Zone.

Placing immediate implants in the esthetic zone poses significant challenges. Implants should be placed with consideration to hard and soft tissues to optimize long-term implant and cosmetic success. In this case report, two maxillary central incisors were extracted at two different time points 5 years apart due to horizontal root fractures. Implants were placed according to immediate single-tooth guidelines using two different surgical and loading approaches, as risk assessment factors changed in the time between the first implant placement (right central incisor) and second implant placement

Implications of Post-Traumatic Treatment of Immature Maxillary Incisors.

The aim of this review was to discuss traumatic dental injuries in view of their treatment implications to provide an evidence-based resource for clinicians when planning treatment for traumatised immature maxillary incisors. Dental trauma to immature maxillary incisors can result in various complications, such as critical fractures, resorptions, or ankylosis, and might lead to tooth loss. Traumatised teeth may exhibit various unaesthetic discolourations as a result of different dental trauma sequelae or materials used for treatment. All of the above can influence patients' social experience,

Restoration of Complicated Crown-Root Fracture in a Primary Incisor with Fragment Reattachment.

In traumatic dental injuries in children, due to a lack of maturity to cope with the situation, pain intolerance, amount of treatment procedure, and parental anxiety, simplified and non-invasive treatment procedures, such as biologic restorations, are useful. Using advanced adhesive material for fragment reattachment provides excellent esthetic results and a positive attitude from the patient and family. The purpose of this case report is to describe the biological restoration of a complicated crown-root fracture of a primary maxillary central incisor with the fragment reattachment technique.
