The low frequency of most dental conditions is an indication that the Garamantian diet was overall balanced, while the high frequency of ante-mortem tooth loss may be related to factors such as oral hygiene, food preparation or eating mode, which c …

BACKGROUND: Prosthodontic and orthodontic procedures have been described for the treatment of patients with traumatic loss of teeth.
PATIENT AND METHODS: Both upper central incisors and the upper right lateral incisor had to be extracted in an 8-year-old patient after failure of conservative procedures following a sports accident. The patient was treated on a temporary basis with a space retainer as a substitute for the teeth. Definitive therapy was carried out by transplanting a lower bicuspid germ into the upper arch with subsequent orthodontic gap closure.
RESULTS: 8 years after the inter

Tooth autotransplantation is performed in patients with congenitally missing teeth and those with traumatic tooth loss. We report a course of edgewise treatment of a girl with multiple congenitally missing teeth and residual features of ectodermal dysplasia, who was treated with autotransplantation of 2 premolars with developing roots. She was 8 years old at the beginning of the treatment. No signs of inflammation, root resorption, or pulp symptoms were observed during the 2.5 years of edgewise treatment after autotransplantation. Cervical external root resorption was detected 31 months postop…

Tooth transposition is defined as positional interchange of 2 adjacent teeth within the same quadrant. The incidence has been reported as about 0.4%, and the maxillary permanent canine has been reported as the tooth most frequently involved. Several etiologic factors like genetics, interchange in position of the developing tooth buds, trauma, mechanical interferences, and early loss of incisors have been associated with tooth transposition. Articles in the literature report various kinds of transpositions, but there are only a few reported cases of transposition of the maxillary canine to cent

The aim of the present study was to perform a retrospective study of autotransplanted teeth with a variable but individually maximized follow-up period in order to provide information on the long-term clinical outcome. The sample was obtained from patients who were treated at the University Hospitals KU-Leuven, Belgium, during the period 1996-2010. Of the total of 109 subjects (137 teeth), 98 patients were invited for recall, of whom 68 patients (87 teeth) responded positively. Eleven out of the 109 patients were excluded due to loss of the transplanted tooth. Although 41 patients had no re-ex

INTRODUCTION: This article reports the use of an orthodontic mini-implant for a temporary crown restoration in a small edentulous space after limited orthodontic treatment.
METHODS: Two clinical cases are presented: a 23-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy. In the adult patient, a 2-piece orthodontic C-implant (Cimplant, Seoul, Korea) was placed in a 3-mm wide edentulous space to build up a temporary crown restoration after a short orthodontic treatment to regain space for a missing mandibular right permanent lateral incisor. In the boy, a C-implant was placed in the space resulting from an

Short Root Defects defined by a reduced ratio of root to crown, may culminate in root resorption and subsequent tooth loss, in spite of the absence of apparent symptoms. Such defects present considerable impediments to orthodontic treatment and restoration. Recent identification of Fam20a, an emergent pseudokinase, has been associated with enamel development and tooth eruption, yet its definitive role in root formation and eruption remains ambiguous. In this research, we initially ascertained that the targeted knockout of Fam20a within the epithelium led to truncated tooth roots, irregular bre…

The Schneider membrane is the mucosa that covers the inner part of the maxillary sinus cavities. The free surface is a ciliated pseudostratified epithelium, while the deeper portion is a highly vascularized connective tissue. The stromal fraction, bordering the bony wall of the sinus, after tooth loss can exhibit increased osteoclastic activity resulting in resorption of the bone in the posterior maxilla. Goal of our study was to isolate and characterize mesenchymal progenitors in the Schneider's membrane connective net and to evaluate their self ability to differentiate toward osteoblastic li…

Gingival recession or root exposure is associated with the loss of soft and hard tissue around the root. Gingival recession not only leads to aesthetic problem, but also affects tooth function, and even causes the loss of tooth. A case was diagnosed as gingival recession of upper incisor and periodontal- endodontic combined lesion. This report included the history of disease, clinical examination, X-ray film, treatment planning, root canal treatment and sequence of periodontal disease treatment (initial therapy, local drug therapy, bone graft and guided tissue regeneration combined with double

INTRODUCTION: Dental restoration following endodontic treatment aims to restore tooth function, aesthetics, and strength compromised by caries or trauma. Loss of tooth structure post-treatment can reduce strength by up to 60%, increasing fracture risk. Restoration choice depends on remaining tooth structure, coronal sealing, retention, and occlusal factors. Direct restorations suit minimal damage, while indirect options like crowns or endocrowns address significant structural loss.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the durability and success of post-endodontic restorations through a scoping review focus

Invasive cervical resorption of the tooth is a relatively rare and uncommon phenomenon where the etiology remains idiopathic and unclear, and if not treated may lead to ultimate loss of tooth structure. Advancements in digital imaging have made the clinician to diagnose the pathological changes with great precision. Proper diagnosis and management of this condition is key to the successful outcome. The aim of this article was to elaborate two case reports of invasive cervical root resorption with surgical management using biocompatible restorative material.

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear encompasses the loss of dental hard tissues through processes including attrition, abrasion and erosion. Previous studies have identified potential associations with age, sex, salivary characteristics, socioeconomic factors and bruxism; however, findings remain inconsistent and often based on single-factor analyses. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with tooth wear, with emphasis on subject‑based bruxism, and to evaluate the relative contribution of bruxism in relation to demographic, socioeconomic, clinical, and functional factors using a multivariate a

BACKGROUND: Traditional distraction osteogenesis (DO) with the tooth-borne rigid external device (RED) system was regularly used in treating patients with cleft-related maxillary hypoplasia. However, the bone-borne RED system with miniplates and bone screws has currently become an effective treatment. This retrospective study was to compare bone-borne RED with traditional tooth-borne RED in distraction effectiveness, blood loss, operative time, and long-term stability.
METHODS: Twenty-two growing patients who underwent RED therapy were divided into two groups: eleven patients utilizing the bo
