BACKGROUND/AIMS: To determine whether self-reported illness perceptions in newly diagnosed patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT) are more negative compared with peers who have lived with their diagnosis for more than 2 years.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 58 newly diagnosed patients with POAG and OHT recruited at their first clinic visit. Electronic patient records were used to identify similar patients (n=58, related by age and severity of visual field loss) who had their diagnosis for >2 years. All participants completed the Brief Illness Perce

INTRODUCTION: the relevance of sociocultural factors with respect to etiology, development and treatment of eating disorders has been supported by many studies.
OBJECTIVES: the aims of this study were: a) to analyze the different effects of the aesthetic body shape model on adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) vs bulimia nervosa (BN); b) to analyze possible differences, regarding that body shape model, between patients with purging behaviors vs non purging types of patients; and c) to explore the relationship between the influence of the aesthetic body shape model and other clinically relev

OBJECTIVE: Psychogenic movement disorder (PMD) and psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) are two subtypes of conversion disorder (CD). In this case-control study, we asked whether these subtypes varied as a function of personality and history of childhood abuse.
METHODS: Fifty-nine patients with PMD from the Human Motor Control Section Clinic at the National Institutes of Health, 43 patients with PNES from the Rhode Island Hospital Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Neurology Division, and 26 healthy volunteers (HC) received a battery of neurological, psychiatric and psychological assessments,

According to sociocognitive theories, aggression is learned and elicited through a series of cognitive processes, such as expectancies, or the various consequences that an individual considers more or less likely following aggressive behavior. The current manuscript describes a measurement development project that ultimately yielded a 16-item measure of positive and negative aggression expectancies suitable for use in adult populations. Across two content generation surveys, two preliminary item refinement studies, and three full studies, we took an iterative approach and administered large it

BACKGROUND: Avoidant personality disorder (APD) is generally believed to be related to social phobia (SP), especially to generalized subtype. However, it has also been reported to be prevalent in panic disorder-agoraphobia (PDA). In the present investigation, we wished to explore whether APD in each of these disorders has discriminatory features.
METHOD: We studied 71 SP and 119 PDA patients with state-of-the-art clinical instruments based on DSM-III-R.
RESULTS: The pattern of social avoidance in SP was more pervasive: it was characterized by a higher level of interpersonal sensitivity and g

A more complete understanding of the psychosocial and clinical predictors of response to pharmacotherapy would be of great value to both patients and physicians. Most demographic and clinical factors have not been found to be useful predictors of response. Although comorbid illness affects quality of life, there is confounding evidence about its importance when predicting response to antidepressant therapy. Some social support factors appear to be positive predictors of outcome in most trials. There is evidence to suggest that comorbid anxiety disorders and panic-agoraphobic spectrum symptoms

Ratings of Potential for Hostility and Hostile Style based on responses during the Type A Structured Interview (SI) are related to incidence of coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality. As there are very limited data on what precisely the SI ratings of hostility mean, the present study evaluated, in a sample of middle-aged men and women, and adolescent boys, a) the distributions of SI ratings of hostility according to gender and age group; b) their relationships to other hostility and personality scores; and c) their relationships to heightened cardiovascular responses to psychological s

Defined barely one decade ago, Frontotemporal Dementia emerges as a new clinical entity that reestablishes the classical Pick's disease as part of a extensive syndrome with important and unsuspected prevalence. Frontotemporal Dementia includes all primary degenerative processes starting in the anterior portions of the brain. This type of dementia is clinically characterized by behavior and personality disorders, more than cognitive alterations. In the present research we performed a bibliographic review of the subject including clinical characteristics, laboratory tests, and neuropathology. Fu

The Type A behavior pattern (TABP), a complex of personality traits characterized by insecurity of status, hyperaggressiveness, sense of time urgency, free-floating hostility, and a tendency toward self-destruction, has been linked to coronary heart disease in both prospective and clinical studies. Attempts to modify the TABP are complicated by conceptual understandings of the behavioral complex. However, intervention studies, such as the San Francisco Recurrent Coronary Prevention Project, have shown that modification is possible. Both psychological and religious factors need to be taken into

While contraception has been an acquired freedom for more than 10 years, a number of women present clinical manifestations resulting in the restriction or the suppression of this freedom. The symptoms are extremely diversified, from forgetting the pill to severe depression, from repeated infections to personality disorders. If many symptoms may be explained from an organic standpoint, others only derive from an unconscious resistance to contraception. The authors attempt to determine the origins of such resistance, their possible variations and advocate a management protocol for patients prese

An attitude towards the disease in patients with chronic somatic disturbances is determined by three factors: the nature of the disease, personality type and the attitude to this particular disease in the microsocial environment to which the patient belongs. Three main types of attitudes towards their disease in patients with chronic somatic disturbances are described: anxious-depressive, melancholic, obsessive-phobic, hypochondriacal, neurasthenical, dysphoric, euphoric, anozognosic, apathetic, egopathic (a fanatic preoccupation with work), sensitive, egocentric, paranoiac. These types may be

BACKGROUND: Substantial literature exists on risk factors for suicidal behaviour. However, their comparative strength, independence and specificity for either suicidal ideation or suicide attempt(s) remain unclear.
METHODS: The Helsinki University Psychiatric Consortium (HUPC) Study surveyed 287 psychiatric care patients with ICD-10-DCR depressive or bipolar disorders about lifetime suicidal behaviour, developmental history and attachment style, personality and psychological traits, current and lifetime symptom profiles, and life events. Psychiatric records were used to confirm diagnosis and

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine racial-ethnic differences in use of mental health treatment for a comprehensive range of specific disorders over time.
METHODS: Data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey and the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey were used to examine adult outpatient mental health visits to U.S. physicians from 1993 to 2008 (N=754,497). Annual visit prevalence for three racial-ethnic groups was estimated as the number of visits divided by the group's U.S. population size. Visit prevalence ratios (VPRs) were calculated as the minorit

Aggression in mental health units is a significant and pervasive problem. However, the characteristics of patients associated with increased aggression propensity remain unclear and there are few attempts to expand understanding of these characteristics by drawing upon contemporary aggression theory. This study assessed the influence of interpersonal (hostile-dominance) and personality (psychopathy), General Aggression Model-specified (aggressive script rehearsal, attitudes towards violence, and trait anger), and clinical (psychiatric symptoms) factors on aggression during psychiatric hospital

Individuals who engage in sexual offending behavior represent a heterogeneous population. Recent research has found some success in categorizing sexual offenders based on a number of variables, particularly the type of victim. For example, differences have been found between those offenders who victimize adults when compared with those who victimize children. However, the research in this area has been conducted predominantly with adult samples. As the adult sex offender literature has progressed, it has become evident that risk assessment, treatment effectiveness, and risk management are depe

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is often characterized by multiple low lethality suicide attempts triggered by seemingly minor incidents, and less commonly by high lethality attempts that are attributed to impulsiveness or comorbid major depression. The relationships among life events, impulsiveness, and type of suicidal behavior has hardly been studied in BPD and mood disorders. This study compared depressed attempters with and without BPD to identify specific suicide precipitants and risk factors in BPD and their relationship to severity of suicidal behavior. Attempters with comorbid B

The present study explored cognitive processes in judgments of drunkenness relative to legally allowable blood alcohol levels for driving. Judgments were based on the manipulation of three cues in hypothetical scenarios in a 3 X 4 X 3 factorial design (Type of Drink X Number of Drinks X Time to Consume). In addition, personality and behavioral characteristics influencing the accuracy of judgments of drunkenness relative to true blood alcohol levels were examined. Results indicated the presence of several misperceptions and inappropriate response tendencies that potentially can be modified with

Complex clinical psychophysiological as well as neurophysiological examinations of 210 children with migraine, chronic tension headache (CTH) and chronic posttraumatic headache (CPH) were carried out. Detailed comparative description of cephalalgia types is presented. In a CPH structure, predominates CTH (77.5%), combined type (14.1%); migraine (5.7%) and cervicogenic cephalalgia (2.7%) occur less often. CPH development mechanisms do not principally differ from non-traumatic cephalalgia pathogenesis. Trauma plays a role of a non-specific trigger in realization of these mechanisms. Chronic ceph
