Human desmocollin (Dsc) 1 is an autoantigen in the subcorneal pustular dermatosis type of IgA pemphigus. Moreover, Dscs, particularly bovine Dscs, are recognized by IgG antibodies in certain sera of various types of pemphigus by immunoblotting. The change of subspecies of protein kinase C (PKC) was studied in 3T3-L1 cells in terms of their differentiation to adipocytes. 3T3-L1 cells feasible to differentiate to adipocytes by exposure to 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) and dexamethasone had both alpha- and beta-PKC. However, 3T3-L1 cells unfurnished with such feasibility had only alpha-PKC. alpha-PKC, therefore, seems to be more deeply involved in differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells to adipocytes than alpha-PKC.

Human CD44 standard isoform (hCD44s) cDNA regulated by a high-expressing promoter was transfected into Balb/c 3T3 cells and the tumorigenic and metastatic capacities of the transfectants were investigated in nude mice at the subcutaneous site. DNA samples from 5 out of 15 stomach cancers and from 5 out of 15 colon cancers showed transforming activity in NIH 3T3 cells upon transfection. A transforming gene from an NIH 3T3 transformant induced by transfection of DNA from a stomach cancer was cloned, and showed transforming activity amounting to 120 focus-forming units/micrograms. The transforming gene was identified as hst. The hst gene was also responsible for acquisition of the transforming activity in DNA samples from 2 other stomach cancers and one colon cancer.
