This study was aimed to investigate one case with rare type B(A) in ABO blood group by using serological and molecular biological methods, and analyze the cause of inconsistency resulting from multiple detections. The serological method was used to identify the serum type of ABO blood group, at the same time the PCR sequencing method was used to detect the genotypes. Immunological safety of red blood cell transfusions implies both prevention of hemolytic reactions and prevention of red cell alloimmunization. A review of clinical, etiologic and immunohematological aspects of hemolytic hazards of blood transfusion is presented and the main conclusions regarding their prevention are emphasized. BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Little data are available regarding the frequencies of the blood group antigens other than ABO and RhD in the Indian population. Knowledge of the antigen frequencies is important to assess risk of antibody formation and to guide the probability of finding antigen-negative donor blood, which is especially useful when blood is required for a patient who has multiple red cell alloantibodies. INTRODUCTION: ABO discrepancies caused by weak A subgroups are uncommon but clinically important because they can lead to mistyping and inappropriate transfusion management.

BACKGROUND: The ABO blood group system categorizes human blood according to the inherited characteristics of erythrocytes, which are defined by the presence or absence of antigens A and B located on the surface of red blood cells. In the absence of these antigens, the body produces natural antibodies.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report, we present a 42-year-old man of Iranian (Persian) ethnicity who was a blood donor at the Arak transfusion center. Forward and reverse typing showed a discrepancy, with AB as the cell type and O blood group as the back type results.

PURPOSE: To determine whether blood groups are genetic markers for primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).
METHODS: ABO, rhesus, and Kell and Duffy blood groups were analyzed in 114 POAG cases and in a control group of age- and sex-matched patients (96 cases).
RESULTS: AB groups are significantly more frequent in POAG cases (10.5%) than in the control group (2%). However, no association was found between POAG and ABO, rhesus, and Kell and Duffy blood groups even when men and women were studied separately.
