A 23-year-old African native male patient presented with fever, lumbalgia and dysuria after returning from a trip to Togo. His physical examination revealed pain over the pubic symphysis and rectal tenderness on digital exam. The C-reactive protein (CRP) level was elevated along with positive blood and urinary cultures for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. An magnetic resonance imaging that has been performed to rule out arthritis/osteomyelitis in the pubis revealed edema of the symphysis. An 18F-FDG positron emission tomography/computed tomography supported the diagnosis of prostat

The authors examine the problem of the differential diagnosis of spontaneous hematoma of the abdominal rectus muscles versus "surgical" or "non-surgical" acute abdomen and other conditions. The clinical characteristics and investigative methods used are reviewed with a view to avoiding diagnostic errors. In addition, the authors discuss 6 clinical cases which they have observed personally.

BACKGROUND Abdominal hollowing selectively targets deep abdominal muscles, whereas abdominal bracing emphasizes global activation of the superficial musculature. This study aimed to compare the effects of abdominal bracing and abdominal hollowing on abdominal muscle thickness and activation during trunk stabilization tasks in healthy adults. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighteen healthy adults (9 males, 9 females) participated in a randomized crossover study. Abdominal bracing and hollowing were performed in random order with a 1-week wash-out period. Muscle thickness of the rectus abdominis (RA), ext…

Diverticulitis may lead to intra-abdominal abscesses; however, extra-abdominal complications such as abdominal muscle wall abscesses are exceedingly rare. These abscesses can present weeks after conservative treatment, often with nonspecific symptoms that delay diagnosis. Understanding rare extension pathways of diverticular inflammation is essential for early recognition and management. We report a case of a 48-year-old male with grade III obesity who presented with a painful abdominal mass one month after an episode of sigmoid diverticulitis. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a

Unilateral paralysis of the oblique abdominal muscles is commonly linked to non-malignant conditions, such as herniated discs, shingles, and phrenic nerve injury, each leading to localized muscle weakness through nerve impairment. However, oblique abdominal muscle paralysis caused by malignant tumors is exceedingly rare. This report presents a unique case of left oblique abdominal muscle paralysis induced by malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), demonstrating a distinct pattern of position-dependent abdominal bulging and umbilical displacement. The patient, a male in his 70s, was initially tre…

Primary abdominal wall closure after intestinal and multivisceral transplantation may not be possible because of loss of abdominal domain and/or graft size/abdominal cavity mismatch. Traditional closure techniques for the open abdomen may not be valid in these circumstances because of severe scarring of the abdominal wall from multiple previous surgeries in this particular group of patients. We present our initial experience with the use of non-vascularized abdominal rectus muscle fascia in two patients who underwent deceased donation and living-related combined liver and small bowel transplan

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Seat belt syndrome (SBS) is a rare condition described as injuries sustained due to thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic compression in the context of traffic accidents. These injuries can range from minor skin abrasions to large lesions of internal organs and spinal cord involvement. Traumatic abdominal wall hernias (TAWH) are one of the injuries that can be associated.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old male suffered a severe injury, resulting in complete transection of all abdominal wall musculature due to SBS, with associated visceral injury. Emergency surgery includ

Complete thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI) results in a loss of innervation to the abdominal muscles, which affects trunk stability and performance of activities of daily living from a sitting position. Respiratory function is also affected, leading to frequent pulmonary complications. Given the importance of trunk stability and respiratory function, we investigated the effects of electromyography triggered electrical stimulation (EMG-ES) applied to the abdominal muscles on sitting balance, respiratory functions and abdominal muscle thickness in individuals with complete thoracic SCI. This ran…

BACKGROUND: Trunk stabilization is essential in rehabilitation and sports training, relying on anticipatory activation of deep trunk muscles … liability for oblique muscles.
CONCLUSIONS: Global training led to hypertrophic changes in lateral abdominal muscles. Local training showed a trend toward increased transverse abdominis thick-ness but without statistical significance. Ultrasound measurements may be less reliable when the transducer is positioned parallel to the body midline.

Pain in the lower part of the back is one of the most common chronic illnesses globally. This work aimed to determine the impact of the rein … physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA). Simulations used decreasing or increasing PCSA values of abdominal muscles and the erector spinae. The analysis involved component and resultant force values on the lumbosacral joint (L5-S1) of the spine and intra-abdominal pressure values. The highest reduction of the resultant reaction value in L5-S1 was observed in the …

Pelvic floor hypertonicity and narrowing of the levator ani hiatus is traditionally assumed in women with dyspareunia and considered a therapeutical target by physical therapists. However, accurate pre-treatment assessment of pelvic floor muscles is difficult to perform in clinical sites. In addition, the abdominal musculature has not been evaluated in this population, despite its relationship with pelvic floor disfunctions. The purpose of this study was to determine the existence of differences in the length of the anteroposterior diameter of the levator ani hiatus (APDH), the thickness of th

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is the most common aortic disease occurring below the renal arteries, caused by multiple etiologies. Currently, no effective drug treatment exists, and the specific pathogenesis remains unclear. Due to its insidious onset and diagnostic challenges, AAA often culminates in aortic rupture, which has a high mortality rate. During AAA development, vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) undergo significant pathological alterations, including contractile dysfunction, phenotypic modulation, cellular degradation, and heightened inflammatory and oxidative stress responses.

BACKGROUND: Hepcidin is a liver-derived hormone that controls systemic iron homeostasis, by inhibiting the iron exporter ferroportin in the gut and spleen, respective sites of iron absorption and recycling. Hepcidin is also expressed ectopically in the context of cardiovascular disease. However, the precise role of ectopic hepcidin in underlying pathophysiology is unknown. In patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), hepcidin is markedly induced in smooth muscle cells (SMCs) of the aneurysm wall and inversely correlated with the expression of LCN2 (lipocalin-2), a protein implicated in AA

Handgrip strength (HGS) is a well-established indicator of muscle strength and a reasonable clinical predictor of metabolic health and diseases. This study explores the association between relative muscular strength and abdominal obesity (AO) in healthy Chilean adults. A convenience sample was recruited (n = 976) between 2018 and 2020. The HGS was determined by dynamometry. The anthropometry (weight, height, waist, and mid-arm circumference) and physical activity were also measured. The relative HGS (RHGS) was calculated by dividing the maximum HGS of the dominant hand by the body mass index.
