Acanthocephalans of the genus Corynosoma infect pinnipeds as definitive hosts, using amphipods and decapods as intermediate hosts and various marine fishes as paratenic hosts. Human infection is associated with the consumption of raw marine fishes from Hokkaido, Japan. Widespread distribution of Hokkaido-sourced marine fishes to the greater Tokyo metropolitan area raises concerns about exposure outside Hokkaido. However, data on the prevalence of Corynosoma cystacanths in marine fish marketed in this region remain limited. A total of 473 individuals (24 species) from Hokkaido and 52 individual

In the late 1990s, the San Miguel Island fox (Urocyon littoralis littoralis) faced near-extinction. Fourteen of the 15 remaining foxes were placed into an island-based captive breeding program used to repopulate the island. Although the fox population in San Miguel reached pre-decline numbers by 2010, a second decline started around 2014, coincidental with a newly observed acanthocephalan parasite. To identify this introduced acanthocephalan species and determine the pathologic consequences of its infection on the health of foxes, we used an extensive record of island fox necropsies and associ

The tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) is a species of great economic importance for fish farming in the Brazilian Amazon, and acanthocephaliasis caused by Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae (Golvan 1956) represents an obstacle to its production due to it causing severe morphological damage to the intestinal mucosa, thus impairing the absorption of nutrients and causing weight loss in the fish. Therefore, the establishment of in vitro protocols for evaluation of anthelmintic drugs is the first step to development of effective measures for in vivo control of this endoparasite. The present study evaluated

Marsupials have been the subject of experimental and natural parasitological studies on helminths in the Americas. Brazil has a significant proportion of the American marsupial fauna, with approximately 15 genera and 69 species out of 95 extant. Helminths have been reported for approximately one-third of the Brazilian marsupial species. Consequently, an update of this information is necessary to ensure the correct identification of the species. This work represents the first comprehensive review of the helminths of the Brazilian marsupials, including taxonomic information on both parasites and

In case of nonspecific, not constantly occurring abdominal symptoms the investigator should be aware of invermination, especially when immigrants or tourists returning from far regions complain about diarrheal tendency, stomach ache, nausea or hepatic and biliary symptoms. Intestinal helminthism is spread all over the world. Some of these diseases are limited to warm regions, but they are more and more often seen in our gastroenterological outpatient departments. Nematodes are found most frequently, with a predominance of Ascaris, Trichuris, and Enterobius. But Ancylostoma and Strongyloides ar

BACKGROUND: Corvidae birds are ecologically significant and host a diverse range of helminth parasites; however, data on their parasitic fauna in Türkiye remain limited. Here, we examined 44 individuals of three corvid species (39 Coloeus monedula, 3 Garrulus glandarius and 2 Corvus corax) from Bursa Province through necropsy and microscopic identification. RESULTS: We detected helminth infections in 79.5% of the birds, identifying 12 species across Digenea (Brachylaima fuscata, Brachylecithum lobatum, Lyperosomum longicauda), Cestoda (Choanotaenia macracantha, Passerilepis stylosa), Nematoda

Parasites are ubiquitous in natural environments, yet their role in shaping host responses to chemical stressors remains largely underexplored in ecotoxicology. We investigated how natural infections by cystacanths of the acanthocephalan Polymorphus minutus and microsporidians modulate the toxicity of the chloroacetamide herbicide metazachlor (MTZ) in Gammarus fossarum during a high-exposure scenario. We exposed P. minutus- and/or microsporidia-infected and uninfected G. fossarum to 1 and 10 mg/L MTZ, assessing behavioral and physiological responses. We observed significantly higher mortality

A species of acanthocephalan collected from the hindgut of Larimichthys crocea was identified as Longicollum pagrosomi Yamaguti, 1935 based on morphological characteristics. The complete mitochondrial genome of this parasite was sequenced. The mitogenome exhibited a circular structure with a total length of 14 632 bp, containing 12 protein coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs) and 2 major non-coding regions. The most frequently used start codon was GTG, and the most abundant amino acid was valine. The phylogenetic analyses of the mitogenome using Bayesian infe

Fish infected with intestinal helminths or pathogenic bacteria can pose a serious risk of foodborne disease, threatening human and animal health, and require high attention. The current study investigates the diversity and composition of the microbiota in the midgut of rabbit fish Siganus rivulatus naturally infected with helminths. Six species of helminth parasites, including the digeneans Hexangium sigani and Gyliauchen volubilis, the acanthocephalans Sclerocollum rubrimaris and Neorhadinorhynchus macrospinosus, and the nematodes Procammalanus elatensis, and Ascaridoid larvae were recorded i

The composition and structure of the helminth fauna in the intestine of the anostomid fish Rhytiodus microlepis was studied during two distinct periods in a floodplain lake in Central Amazonia. Additionally, the tissue damage in the infected intestine caused by the endoparasites was observed. Of the 38 fish analysed, a high prevalence of infection by Digenea (metacercariae) and Acanthocephala (> 90%) was observed; the metacercariae preferred the initial portions of the intestine, with a high frequency of occurrence in the lamina propria of the mucosa (75.9%), while the acanthocephalans occurre

A total of 35 common garfish, Belone belone (Linnaeus, 1761), were studied for metazoan parasites on their spawning grounds in the western Baltic Sea. Nine parasite species were found, and six new locality records could be established for German coastal waters (Axine belones, Monogenea; Proteocephalus sp., Cestoda; Anisakis simplex (s.s.), Contracaecum rudolphii A and Hysterothylacium aduncum, Nematoda; Echinorhynchus gadi, Acanthocephala). For the first time, the marine ectoparasite A. belones was recorded from the gills of garfish inside the Baltic Sea, indicating its ability to survive the

Specimens of Neoechinorhynchus (Neoechinorhynchus) poonchensis sp. n. are described from Schizothorax richardsonii (Gray) in the Poonch River, Jammu and Kashmir. Specimens are thick-walled with dissimilar dorsal and ventral para-receptacle structures, anteriorly manubriated hooks, two giant nuclei in each lemniscus and many subcutaneousy. The lemnisci barely overlap the larger anterior testis, the cement gland has eight giant nuclei, and the seminal vesicle is large with thin walls. The vagina is unremarkable but the long uterus is made up of four specialised regions. Neoechinorhynchus rigidus

Feral swine (Sus scrofa) are an introduced species to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), US, and serve as carriers of several diseases that are considered a threat to other wildlife, domestic animals, and humans. During 2013 and 2015, fecal samples from 67 feral swine from the GSMNP within both Tennessee and North Carolina, US, were opportunistically collected as part of a feral swine removal program and submitted to the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, Knoxville, Tennessee, for parasite screening by centrifugal sugar flotation. Ten taxa from the phyla Acan

Gastrointestinal (GIT) parasites of domestic cats (Felis catus) not only cause morbidity but are also potential zoonotic agents. The current study aimed at establishing the prevalence of GIT parasites in cats kept by households in Thika region, Kenya. Fecal samples were collected randomly from 103 cats and analyzed for presence of parasites using standard parasitological methods. In descending order, the prevalence of the detected protozoa parasites was Isospora spp. 43.7% (95% CI: 40.4-47%), Cryptosporidium spp. 40.8% (95% CI: 37.5-44.1%), Toxoplasma gondii 7.8% (95% CI: 4.5-11.1%), and Entam

BACKGROUND: Swine species are an important source of meat production worldwide, except in Islamic countries where pig breeding and pork consumption are forbidden. Hence, they are often neglected in these regions. A considerable number of wild boars (Sus scrofa) inhabit Iranian territories, particularly in dense forests of north, west and southwest of the country, but our knowledge regarding their parasites is very limited.
OBJECTIVE: The lack of a comprehensive record in this connection encouraged us to review the whole works of literature in the country.
METHODS: The current review presents

The histopathology and ultrastructure of the intestine of mullets, Liza ramada and Liza saliens, from Comacchio lagoons (northern Italy) naturally infected with myxozoans and helminths were investigated and described. Sixty-two (80.5%) of 77 mullets harboured one or more of the following parasites species: Myxobolus mugchelo (Myxozoa), Neoechinorhynchus agilis (Acanthocephala), Haplosplanchnus pachysomus and Dicrogaster contractus (Digenea). Co-occurrence of helminths with myxozoans was common. The main damage caused by digeneans was destruction of the mucosal epithelium of the villi, necrosis

Distribution of Leptorhynchoides thecatus (Acanthocephala: Rhadinorhynchidae) among the pyloric caeca and the relationship between site and rate of maturation were studied in laboratory infections of 10, 25 and 40 cystacanths fed to green sunfish, Lepomis cyanellus. After 1 week fish fed at each intensity had significantly different numbers of worms. By the 3rd week post-infection, parasites disappeared from the anterior portion of the intestine. At this time the mean numbers of worms recovered from 25 and 40-cystacanth infections were not significantly different. At the end of the 1st week, t

The egg is one of the fundamental parts of the life cycle of Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae, and this stage involves the acanthor larva. It is also the infection phase for the intermediate host. Under normal conditions, the larva inside the egg can survive for months in the environment; however, information regarding this phase of life of the parasite is scarce. In addition, there is no quantitative information about the structural composition of the parasite's body from a histological point of view. Such information is essential in order to support decisions aimed at controlling infestations by
