Near vision stress: vergence adaptation and accommodative fatigue.

Changes in the visual system following prolonged near work were investigated. Fifteen young, normal subjects undertook a severe, two hour long, binocular near visual task at 20 cm without any breaks. Fusional stress was assessed by near 'phoria change. Refractive change was measured with an autorefractometer to investigate whether transient myopia occurred and its subsequent recovery. The near task caused vergence adaptation which was primarily due to the fusional stress of the task (accounting for 67% of its variance). The 'phoria change was to a lesser extent (40%) dependent on the accommoda

Neuroadaptation of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Advances in the design of intraocular lenses give options to patients for some return to the optical accommodation needed to focus on objects at different distances. Technology is only improving these options for presbyopic-correcting intraocular lenses. Surgeons must consider the possible neuroadaptation abilities in patients that may help in the success of using these lenses. RECENT FINDINGS: The hierarchy of the visual system allows two disparate retinal images to combine to form a single picture with depth. Attempts to correct presbyopia with intraocular lenses add comp

The effects of a spaceflight analog with elevated CO2 on sensorimotor adaptation.

Aboard the International Space Station (ISS), astronauts must adapt to altered vestibular and somatosensory inputs due to microgravity. Sensorimotor adaptation on Earth is often studied with a task that introduces visuomotor conflict. Retention of the adaptation process, known as savings, can be measured when subjects are exposed to the same adaptive task multiple times. It is unclear how adaptation demands found on the ISS might interfere with the ability to adapt to other sensory conflict at the same time. In the present study, we investigated the impact of 30 days' head-down tilt bed rest c

Conserved optical adaptations enable amphibious vision in compound eyes.

The visual systems of amphibious animals must perform in two optically distinct environments: air and water. Little is known about how diffraction-limited, arthropod compound eyes maintain optical function across the air-water interface, aside from one commonality: flat corneas. Since the external shape of a lens is only one of several properties that influence optical performance, we examined how the corneal optics of compound eyes varied with amphibious ecology across two biological transects: developmentally in one insect species and comparatively among multiple species. Both analyses revea

[Edge filters : Medical indications and clinical application].

Edge filters are used in aphakic eyes as a substitute of the natural cut-off filter of the intact eye or in other causes of a lack of light absorption in the eye itself. Furthermore, they can remedy light adaptation disturbances, especially in hereditary retinal diseases and retinal dystrophy. They enhance contrast and reduce glare. In order to choose an adequate cut-off filter it is necessary to let the participants test various filters before prescription. Because of the (absolute) absorption of blue light, cut-off filters normally lead to a loss of ability to drive.

Combining coma with astigmatism can improve retinal image over astigmatism alone.

We demonstrate that certain combinations of non-rotationally symmetric aberrations (coma and astigmatism) can improve retinal image quality over the condition with the same amount of astigmatism alone. Simulations of the retinal image quality in terms of Strehl Ratio, and measurements of Visual Acuity under controlled aberrations with adaptive optics were performed, varying defocus, astigmatism and coma. Astigmatism ranged between 0 and 1.5D. Defocus ranged typically between -1 and 1D. The amount of coma producing best retinal image quality (for a given relative angle between astigmatism and c

Effect of orthoptics upon the ability of patients to adapt to prism-induced heterophoria.

In a previous study we showed that subjects with abnormal binocular vision either lacked or had a deficient ability to adapt their oculomotor systems to a prism-induced heterophoria. In this study we report on the results of an experiment designed to establish whether the adaptation ability improves in patients who are successfully treated, by means of orthoptics, for convergence insufficiency. In all seven patients examined, we found an improved ability to adapt. Whereas at the beginning of the experiment only two patients fell within the 95% confidence limits of the norm, at the end five pat

Double-masked randomised placebo-controlled trial of the effect of prismatic corrections on rate of reading and the relationship with symptoms.

Practitioners' decisions on when to intervene in decompensated heterophoria are often based on symptoms, which are in some cases an unreliable indicator of whether an intervention will be helpful. The aim of our study was to determine when prismatic corrections improve performance at a measure of dynamic visual function: the Wilkins Rate of Reading Test (WRRT). All participants manifested an aligning prism (associated heterophoria) on the near Mallett Unit of 0.5Delta or greater. There were 80 participants, of whom 58 had exophoria, 15 esophoria, and seven hyperphoria. The effect of the aligni

Suppression of vestibular nystagmus by forced convergence in normal human subjects.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that the principal mechanism of nystagmus suppression in the nystagmus blockage syndrome is either adduction of the eye or convergence. We examined this issue using the nystagmus of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) as a model. METHODS: A motorized, computer-controlled rotary chair was used to produce VOR in darkness, using either sinusoidal or velocity step stimulation. Left eye position was monitored and horizontal slow-phase eye velocity was calculated. Subjects were cued to converge or perform other gaze tasks. RESULTS: Convergence suppressed nystagmus.

Vergence adaptation and the order of clinical vergence range testing.

When measuring horizontal relative vergence ranges, the conventional clinical procedure is to assess the base-in (or divergence) range before the base-out (or convergence) determination. The rationale for this order of testing is that the convergence responses stimulated during the base-out measurements may produce vergence adaptation (i.e., a fusional aftereffect), which may temporarily bias the subsequent base-in values in the base-out direction. However, the effect of reversing this order of testing (i.e, base-out before base-in) has not been directly evaluated. Accordingly, the present stu

Heterophoria.

With the large number of factors that contribute to the "position of rest" or fusion-free posture, it might be expected that heterophoria would be normally distributed. Data from a large sample of symptom-free subjects (N = 925) show that this is not so. Furthermore, the difference in the prism adaptation response in orthophoria, esophoria, and exophoria suggests that the presence of heterophoria in normal subjects is due to the partial saturation of prism adaptation.

Early receptor potential evidence for the existence of two thermally stable states in the barnacle visual pigment.

The early receptor potential (ERP) in the barnacle photoreceptor is shown by intracellular recording to exhibit a strong dependence on the color of the stimulus and of the preceding adaptation. The adaptation effects appear to be stable for at least 3 h in the dark. Most strikingly, the ERP is positive after red adaptation and mainly negative after blue adaptation. The simplest hypothesis which accounts for these observations is that two thermally stable pigment states with different absorption spectra contribute to the ERP. All ERP responses appear to be consistent with the sums of different

Characteristics and variability of vertical phoria adaptation in normal adults.

We evaluated the characteristics of phoria adaptation for vertically induced retinal disparity. An adaptive change in the fusion-free ocular alignment, phoria adaptation, was measured with a computer-aided mirror haploscope at 10, 30, and 60 minutes after the start of wearing of a 3-prism-diopter base up prism by 35 normal subjects ranging in age from 21 to 67 years (mean: 37 years). The relationships between phoria adaptation and the subjects' age, the vertical fusional amplitude, the amount of heterophoria, and the starting time of the examination were evaluated. All subjects showed phoria a

Gaze-dependent phoria and vergence adaptation.

Incomitance is a condition with gaze-dependent deviations of ocular alignment and is common in strabismus patients. The physiological mechanisms that maintain equal horizontal ocular alignment in all gaze directions (concomitance) in healthy individuals are poorly explored. We investigate adaptive processes in the vergence system that are induced by horizontal incomitant vergence stimuli (stimuli that require a gaze-dependent vergence response in order to re-establish binocular single vision). We measured horizontal vergence responses elicited after healthy subjects shifted their gaze from a p

The pupil can control an artificial lens intuitively.

PURPOSE: After cataract surgery, the ability to accommodate is lost. For this reason, a mechatronic IOL is being developed at the moment: The Artificial Accommodation System. This device requires an easily measureable indicator of the distance of the observed object to determine the demand of accommodation. As the pupil constricts with near vision, pupil size might be such an indicator. Our research focused on whether the pupil can control an artificial lens. METHODS: A study with 14 healthy subjects aged between 24 and 64 years was conducted. An artificial lens with variable refractive power

Custom-Made Ocular Prosthesis for Atrophic Anophthalmic Cavity.

The ocular prosthesis is a modality of facial prosthesis that acts on the repair of loss or deformity of the ocular globe. Prosthetic rehabilitations destined to anophthalmic cavities that suffered cicatricial retraction represent a challenge during fabrication since they often need to be reduced due to atrophic of the cavity and simultaneously need to have a good esthetic appearance regarding the contour and artificial iris. This clinical report describes the ocular prosthetic rehabilitation of a 77-year-old man with anophthalmic atrophic cavity due to herpes zoster-induced loss. The treatmen
