This paper attempts to identify the sources and evaluate the prevalence of halitosis in children with adenoid hypertrophy. The study included pediatric patients admitted for adenoidectomy due to obstructive symptoms. Patients with possibly other causes of halitosis, were excluded from the study. Halitosis was detected in 30 out of 136 children (22.1%). The effect of adenoid hypertrophy on halitosis was confirmed by the significant reduction in the organoleptic score rated according to the Rosenberg scale (on average by 2°) and the levels of volatile sulfur compounds (on average 84 ppb) post-ad

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare tumor arising from the minor salivary glands;, the palate being the commonest site. Distant metastasis and perineural invasion areis common in adenoid cystic carcinoma. Diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma is made usually with the help of clinical features, radiographic features and histologic features. We reported a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of palate involving left maxillary sinus. The diagnosis of the case and brief review of literature of adenoid cystic carcinoma is discussed. The aim here is to highlight the importance of diagnosis, treatment and

OBJECTIVE: To review the clinical presentation and imaging findings of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of the period between January 1990 and July 2004, comprising five cases of ACC of the breast, all in women, among 4,036 malignant lesions diagnosed (0.12%). We reviewed the available imaging studies (mammography in all five cases, ultrasound in four, and magnetic resonance in one). We also reviewed the clinical presentation and evolution in all patients.
RESULTS: Three patients presented with palpable lesions. Mammographic findings co

The adenoid cystic carcinoma represents less than 1% of all the malignant tumours located in the larynx. Only about 80 cases have been described so far in world literature. In contrast with the epidermoid carcinoma of the larynx, the adenoid cystic carcinoma is not apparently related to common risk factors such as smoking. However the prognosis is much worse, with survival rates of less than 20% after 15-20 years. Treatment is surgical, although radiotherapy may be of help. In this paper a new case of adenoid cystic carcinoma located in the supraglottis of a 26-years-old woman is reported and

Diseases of the adenoids and tonsils are a frequent cause for patients to seek medical attention. A thorough understanding of the disease processes reflected in the adenoids and tonsils and their diagnosis and treatment is an important part of routine care delivery. Diagnostic methodologies and timing of surgical intervention are reviewed along with general considerations relating to the differential diagnosis in adult and pediatric patients.

Twelve cases of pure adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast were reviewed. Patients ranged in age from 34 to 69 years. Seven carcinomas were in the right breast, and five in the left; five of the 12 were located in the central region of the breast, five in the upper outer quadrant, and the two in the upper inner and lower inner quadrants, respectively. Average diameter of the primary tumors was 2.5 cm (range, 0.7 to 6.0). We graded the tumors according to a system used for adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary gland: five tumors were grade I, six were grade II, and one was grade III. An ave

Nasopharyngeal adenoid hypertrophy (NAH) is a typical benign lesion. Due to involution, nasopharyngeal lymphatic tissue usually is not found in adults beyond the 30th to 40th year of life. However, occasionally NAH has been recognized after the 50th or 60th year. The aim of this study is to identify the frequency of NAH and to analyze its MRI findings in different age groups. From 2007 to 2011, 6693 MR investigations of the head were performed at our institution. MRI was obtained with a 1.5 T MRI device. NAH was identified in 18.0% of the patients. The frequency of NAH varied from 60.3% to 1.0

BACKGROUND: Few cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the scalp have been described in the literature. Herein, we report a new case illustrating the difficulties of diagnosis and treatment of this rare form of tumour.
CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old man consulted for a large ulcerated scalp tumour. The biopsy sample exhibited an aspect of cystic adenoid carcinoma. Bone invasion had occurred. Extremely wide surgical excision was carried out, extending down to the dura mater, with covering by means of a frontal flap with left temporal pedicle. Since the edges of the resection were also tumoural, post

A 20-year-old male, presented with cough, haemoptysis, breathlessness and wheezing for the past one month. Contrast enhanced computerised tomographic (CECT), scan of chest and fibreoptic bronchoscopy revealed an endotracheal mass that on histopathological examination showed adenoid cystic carcinoma of trachea. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of chest confirmed involvement of adjacent prevertebral, para-oesophageal and subcarinal lymph nodes rendering the tumour inoperable.

Persistent hypernasality after adenotonsillectomy is not an uncommon complication, occurring in approximately 1 in 1,500 procedures. The primary aetiological factor is an underlying congenital abnormality of the palate which is unmasked by removing the adenoidal tissue. It is possible to identify many of those at risk by careful history taking and clinical examination. For those patients in whom this complication occurs spontaneous improvement can be expected for up to one year afterwards, and speech therapy may be useful. Surgical intervention is necessary in up to 50% of cases.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx is rare. Only 7 cases have been treated in our hospital from 1959 to 1986, which comprised 0.7% of all laryngeal malignancies in the same period. Of the 7 cases, there were 5 males and 2 females with the average age of 47. The symptoms at the time of diagnosis varied according to the size and location of the tumor. Three lesions were considered as supraglottic and one as subglottic. Six cases were treated by surgery and one by radiotherapy alone. The most common site of distant metastasis was the lung. The average survival was long even in those with pulm

Adenoid cystic carcinoma, or cylindromas, constitute a large and distinct group of neoplasms with characteristic microscopic features recognizable in tissues as varied as the nasal passages, tongue, and bronchi. Cylindromas of the larynx are rare and only 60 cases have been reported in a review of the literature in 1977. In this report, a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma originating in the subglottic area of the larynx is discussed, with emphasis on the clinical and pathologic characteristics. In the past, the histogenesis of cylindroma has been the subject of considerable controversy, but rec

Over the past several years the indications for adenoidectomy have become increasingly controversial. Attempts to justify the operation in recurrent otitis media by correlating cultures of the nasopharynx with cultures of middle ear fluid have been inconclusive. Using quantitative bacteriologic techniques, we have studied the levels of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria per gram of tissue in adenoids removed from 48 patients. In seven patients, adenoidectomy was performed for nasal obstruction alone, in 17 patients for chronic serous otitis media, and in 24 patients for recurrent suppurative and s…

Burkitt Lymphoma(BL) is a highly aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma characterized by extremely rapid proliferation and specific genetic alterations, representing the fastest-growing human malignancy. Early detection is associated with high treatment success rates, while advanced stages carry a poor prognosis. Our department admitted a pediatric patient with BL primarily originating in the adenoids. The child was initially hospitalized for adenoid hypertrophy and underwent surgical resection, with routine postoperative pathology showing no significant abnormalities. Three weeks postoperativ…
