Perspectives of staff and administrators on active aging among older inpatients: a qualitative descriptive study of an Ontario hospital.

Older adults in Canadian hospitals often experience prolonged stays, leading to high volumes of sedentary time and social isolation, both of which negatively impact recovery. This qualitative descriptive study explored how healthcare workers and hospital leadership perceive these challenges and the opportunities to address them. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 participants (12 health care workers and 6 leaders) at a mid-sized Ontario hospital, using the Social Ecological Model to guide design and analysis. Thematic analysis revealed four interrelated themes: role-related ambi

Aging in South Korea: the first penguin of the fastest aging nations.

South Korea is experiencing the world's most rapid demographic transition, having officially become a super-aged society in December 2024, with individuals aged 65 and older exceeding 20% of the total population. This shift-driven by record-low fertility rates and increasing life expectancy-presents unprecedented socioeconomic and policy challenges. This spotlight provides a critical overview of Korea's demographic shift and reviews 5 key issues related to population aging: (a) pensions and social insurance, (b) healthcare and caregiving, (c) employment and retention of older workers, (d) pove

The changing epidemiology of the ageing thalassaemia populations: A position statement of the Thalassaemia International Federation.

Therapeutic advances in β-thalassaemia have gradually lead to a significant improvement in prognosis over the past few decades. As a result, patients living in areas where disease-specific programmes offering access to modern therapy are in place experience a new era of prolonged survival that tends to reach that of the normal population. This ageing thalassaemia population, however, faces a new spectrum of comorbidities resulting from increasing age that may jeopardise the advances in prognosis provided by current therapy and thus poses new challenges in diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. García Márquez's 'last' female protagonist: Ageing, sexuality, and transgression.

The article focuses on the portrayal of a middle-aged woman, Ana Magdalena Bach, as depicted in Gabriel García Márquez's posthumously published work Until August (2024). It analyses the complexities of female ageing, with a particular focus on the intersection of ageism and sexism. What makes the examination of García Márquez's 'last' work particularly compelling is that, for the first time in his literary career, he chose to write from a female perspective. Ana Magdalena's travel to a remote Caribbean island serves as a liberating journey of self-discovery and an exploration of femininity and

Social Identity and Power: Older Adults as "Care Recipients" in Media Content on Family Care.

In the context of normalized forms of elder abuse and neglect in Canada, it is important to examine how constructions of family caregivers in the public sphere (re)produce potentially harmful assumptions. In this paper, we examine mainstream media construction of the "caregiver" identity in advocacy-related coverage over a 6-year time period (2016-2021). Relying on abductive formal analysis, we explore how care for older adults is presented as largely burdensome and linked to what are labeled the "complex care needs" of a growing aging population that is erroneously presented as largely incapa

[Peculiarities in the management of arterial hypertension in the elderly: Consensus document of the Central American and Caribbean Society of arterial hypertension].

Arterial hypertension is one of the most prevalent diseases in the field of geriatrics and is also a risk factor for pathologies that frequently result in hospital admissions, such as heart failure and stroke. This article addresses both pharmacological and non-pharmacological diagnosis and treatment strategies, focusing on the role of frailty as a guiding principle in determining the most appropriate course of treatment, emphasizing patient-centred prescribing. Furthermore, the article reviews other frequent topics, such as polypharmacy and orthostatic hypotension. Moreover, a concise overvie

Is It "Aging" or Immunosenescence? The COVID-19 Biopsychosocial Risk Factors Aggravating Immunosenescence as Another Risk Factor of the Morbus. A Developmental-clinical Social Work Perspective.

COVID-19 has proliferated ageism. The impetus of this article is to show that immunosenescence is a risk factor to COVID-19 and not aging per se. Based on the idea that some older people are also healthier than younger ones, the emphasis of this article is on immunosenescence and not aging as a risk factor of COVID-19 complications. The paper utilizes a biopsychosocial approach to expound on the link between immunosenescence and COVID-19 risk factors. The article explores biological factors such as malnutrition, comorbidities, substance abuse, and sex. It also expands on psychosocial factors s

Empowering older adults-a strength-based and culturally inclusive framework for enhancing mental health outcomes.

Background: Despite the rapid growth of the older adult population and the increasing need to address mental health disparities in older adults, ageism and the embodiment of age stereotypes have negatively impacted their mental health. Both the Decade (2021-2030) of the Healthy Ageing Report from the World Health Organization and the Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Older Adults from the American Psychological Association call for greater attention to focus on the strengths of older adults, positive aspects of aging, and recognition of how cultural contexts influence their psychologi

An alternative approach to developing guidelines for the management of an anticipated extremely preterm infant.

Objectives To identify the probability of survival and severe neurodevelopmental impairment (sNDI) at which perinatal physicians would or would not offer or recommend resuscitation at birth for extremely preterm infants. Methods A Delphi process consisting of five rounds was implemented to seek consensus (>80% agreement) amongst British Columbia perinatal physicians. The first-round consisted of neonatal and maternal-fetal-medicine Focus Groups. Rounds two to five surveyed perinatal physicians, building upon previous rounds. Draft guidelines were developed and agreement sought. Results Based o

How Are Dehumanizing Perceptions of Homelessness Associated With Age?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Increasing numbers of unhoused older individuals in the United States underscores the urgency for tailored services and support. Previous studies demonstrate prevalent negative attitudes and dehumanizing perceptions toward unhoused people. Additionally, past research highlights the influence of ageism and dehumanization on the care older adults receive. However, limited work addresses the layered dehumanization faced by unhoused aging individuals. This study investigated how dehumanizing perceptions of homelessness were associated with age. Do Beliefs That Older Adults Are Inflexible Serve as a Barrier to Racial Equality?

Past research has demonstrated that older adults are stereotyped as less malleable than young adults. Moreover, beliefs that people are less malleable are associated with lower confrontations of prejudice, as perpetrators are seen as less capable of changing their (prejudiced) behavior. The present research sought to integrate these lines of research to demonstrate that endorsement of ageist beliefs that older adults are less malleable will lead to a lower confrontation of anti-Black prejudice espoused by older adults. Across four experimental studies (N = 1,573), people were less likely to co

Trends in elder abuse and age discrimination during the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong: Findings from a two-wave representative telephone survey study.

OBJECTIVES: Empirical evidence about the heightened risks of elder abuse and age discrimination during the COVID-19 pandemic is scarce. This study aimed to track the changes in rates of both, and investigated their associated factors in the community-dwelling older population in Hong Kong. METHODS: In this two-wave, cross-sectional telephone survey, we interviewed a population-based sample of individuals (≥55 years), and captured the situation of elder abuse and age discrimination before the COVID-19 outbreak (n = 1209, Wave 1: October-December 2019) and during the pandemic (n = 891, Wave 2:

Psychometric testing of the Chinese version of Workplace Age Discrimination Scale and its short-form among Taiwanese teachers.

Workplace age discrimination is a widespread issue that particularly affects older adults. The present study aimed to examine age discrimination within the educational context by validating the Chinese version of the Workplace Age Discrimination Scale (WADS) among Taiwanese teachers. A total of 671 teachers (mean age = 41.0 years; 74% female) completed an online survey. Both full-form (26-item) and short-form (9-item) versions of the WADS were translated using a forward-backward method. All participants were required to complete the Chinese version of WADS and the following external measures:

Aging beauty matters: Normative and resistant narratives on female aging bodies.

This article examines how older women navigate beauty work and anti-aging norms within contemporary Western aesthetic regimes. Rather than centering menopause as a biological transition, the study foregrounds beauty work as a key site where ageism and sexism intersect in shaping women's embodied experiences. Drawing on feminist sociology, cultural gerontology, embodiment theory, and scholarship on decline narratives, visibility and temporal governance, anti-aging norms are conceptualized as a form of gendered biopolitical regulation that frames visible aging as aesthetic and moral failure.Base

Stress and coping among gay men: age and ethnic differences.

Previous studies suggest that perceived stigmatization of sexual minority status, ethnicity, and age are associated with negative mental health outcomes, and other studies suggest that coping styles may influence these outcomes. However, no studies have examined these relationships among gay men of varying ethnicities and age groups. Three hundred eighty-three Black and White, younger, middle-aged, and older adult gay men completed measures of perceived stigmatization, coping style, and mental health outcomes. Black older adult gay men reported significantly higher levels of perceived ageism t

The Japan Geriatrics Society 2025 Position Statement on End-of-Life Care for Older Adults: English Translation of the Japanese Article.

This paper presents the official position statement of the Japan Geriatrics Society (JGS), updating the "2012 JGS Position Statement" regarding end-of-life (EOL) care for older adults. The "2025 JGS Position Statement," which was recently published in Japanese, introduces an original definition of EOL, conceptualizing it in two stages: first, based on the individual's medical condition, and subsequently, from the perspective of the individual's life story. In this statement, EOL care refers to medical treatment and care provided at the end of life, grounded in appropriate medical judgment, res

Global ageing: successes, challenges and opportunities.

The world's population is ageing rapidly, with significant increases in the numbers of the oldest old. This places great pressure on societies to adapt to this changing demography. Pertinent issues include provision of education and resource for long-term conditions. The priorities older people hold need to be fully understood and their contributions to society, often diverse and far-reaching, recognised with sincerity. Currently, health systems for older people can often feel reactive, fragmented and disjointed. These systems can harbour inequity and ageism, and leave both patients and health

In search of existential health in Swedish primary care: perspectives from older adults who took part in an existential group treatment.

BACKGROUND: Although interest in existential perspectives on health is growing, little is known about how such perspectives are experienced by older adults in primary care. The aim of this study was to understand how older adults who took part in a primary care-based existential group treatment describe the role of existential challenges in relation to their health and in primary care. METHODS: Seventeen patients (75+) with psychological distress who had completed a 7-week existential group treatment took part in individual interviews. Transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis. RESUL

Social Participation Among Older Immigrants: A Cross-Sectional Study in Nine Cities in Canada.

Background/Objectives: Social participation is important for healthy aging but challenging for older immigrants because of factors such as the loss of cultural community, language and transportation barriers, ageism, and racism. This study aimed to examine (1) the type of social activities in which older immigrants from Arabic (Arab), Mandarin (East Asian), and Punjabi-speaking (South Asian) communities in Canada engage; (2) their desire for more participation in social activities; and (3) factors they perceive as preventing their engagement in more social activities.
