The in vivo canine model of the larynx was used to measure transglottic pressures and airflow during phonation. Conditions of supraglottal resistance were also simulated. Pressure drop-flow curves were compared with data on collapsible tubes. The in vivo in canine model of the larynx demonstrates a number of features similar to oscillation in collapsible tubes.

An enclosed flow-through system using airborne ozone for disinfection and which removes the ozone with a catalytic converter was tested with a strain of Escherichia coli. Petri dishes containing the microorganisms were inserted in a chamber and exposed for 10-480 min to ozone concentrations between 4 and 20 ppm. Death rates in excess of 99.99% were achieved. White mice were used to isolate H. capsulatum from the air in the Aguas Buenas Caves, Puerto Rico. Based on the infection of mice, the ten test sites yielded positive results for the presence of the fungus. Air currents through this cave are believed to be the most important factor responsible for the even distribution of H. capsulatum. Cultural differences concerning spore concentrations were observed. Age and sex of the exposed mice do not seem to play a role in acquiring histoplasmosis.

In recent years, machine learning-based handwriting analysis has emerged as a valuable tool for supporting the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and predicting its progression. AIM: The primary purpose of an avalanche airbag is to prevent burial during an avalanche. Approximately twenty percent of avalanche victims deploying airbags become critically buried, however. We report a case in which ultrasonography (US) examination was used in the Emergency Department to reveal and diagnose gas contamination of a penetrating wound. Air microbubbles are extremely small and their typical distribution and movement are like those of "sparkling-wine microbubbles". US assessment of spontaneous disappearance of the air bubbles can distinguish a harmless traumatic nature of the wound from a life-threatening gas-producing bacterial infection.
