A monitoring programme, in place since 2006, continues to recover radioactive particles (<2 mm diameter) and larger objects from the beaches of West Cumbria. The potential risks to members of the public using the beaches are mainly related to prolonged skin contact with or the inadvertent ingestion of small particles. At present, there is widespread interest in developing new, biocompatible microparticles made from polymers such as poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) that could have applications ranging from diagnostic imaging to drug delivery. In these experiments, there were two primary objectives: (1) to stabilize a suspension of iron (III) oxide (alpha-Fe(2)O(3); mean diameter = 100 nm) nanoparticles in a solution of PMMA by using an emulsifier and different mixtures of two miscible solvents; and (2) to fabricate PMMA-alpha-Fe(2)O(3) microparticles by using an oil-in-water (o/w) solvent evaporation method.

Fast repair in diploid yeast cells Saccharomyces cerevisiae XS800 exposed to the combined irradiation (alpha-particles + high-velocity electrons) was studied. It has been shown that fast repair was significantly more effective after combined irradiation with high doses than after exposure to high-velocity electrons or alpha-particles alone. The regions of radioresistance in the cell survival curves after combined irradiation can be explained by fast post-irradiation repair.

Polysterene particles bearing on its surface recombinant protein receptor domain of protective antigen anthrax exotoxin, exposed in different orientations have been constructed.
