The aim of the study was to investigate ammonia recovery from high strength agro industry effluents involving significant amounts of ammonia, by applying magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) precipitation technology. Two types of industrial effluents have been tested in the study. The first plant was an opium alkaloid processing industry and the second one was a baker's yeast industry. High chemical oxygen demand (COD), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and unacceptable dark brown color characterized effluents from both industries. Effluents from the biologically treated opium alkaloid and baker's y…

1. Juvenile chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) were injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) with 0.25 M mannitol followed 1 hr later by an i.p. challenge of ammonium acetate. 2. At 10.75 mmol ammonium acetate/kg body weight, 98% of the fish showed signs of ammonium toxicity and 69% died. 3. Substitution of L-carnitine (10-16 mmol/kg) for mannitol afforded striking protection from the subsequent challenge with ammonium acetate; 67% showed no signs of ammonia toxicity and only 4% died. 4. Of other quaternary amines tested, trimethylamine oxide also afforded protection, but betaine and choline d…

Ammonia (NH3) plays a crucial role in the agricultural sector as a fertilizer and is a dense hydrogen carrier that offers a potential renewable and carbon-free energy source. These significant advantages necessitate the development of efficient NH3 synthesis and separation systems. Conventionally, the Haber-Bosch (HB) process involves synthesis at high temperature (>673 K, 100-200 bar) and separation of NH3 from the equilibrium-limited reaction mixture through condensation at low temperatures. Among various alternative NH3 separation techniques, adsorption approaches in porous solids have been…

The cation exchanger, Na+/H+ exchanger isoform 4 (NHE4), has been thought to have a central role in renal ammonia metabolism and handling by acting in a Na+ for NH4+ exchange mode at the basolateral plasma membrane in the thick ascending limb (TAL) of the loop of Henle. These studies aimed to determine the effect of NHE4 deletion on ammonia metabolism under basal conditions and in response to metabolic acidosis. Constitutive NHE4 deletion resulted in increased urine ammonia excretion associated with significantly lower urine pH; this increase did not lead to metabolic alkalosis. In response to…

Ammonia is a byproduct of the metabolism of nitrogen-containing micro and macromolecules. The key source of bodily ammonia in humans is the small intestine, from diet, luminal bacterial activity, and deamination of glutamine in enterocytes. It is disposed of from the system, mainly in the liver, through the urea cycle. Physiologically, ammonia plays a minor role in acid-base homeostasis. It is the critical molecule implicated in the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy. Liver disease is the most common cause of hyperammonemia, while others include urea cycle defects, infections, and drugs. T…

Natural nitrogen cycle has been severely disrupted by anthropogenic activities. The overuse of N-containing fertilizers induces the increase of nitrate level in surface and ground waters, and substantial emission of nitrogen oxides causes heavy air pollution. Nitrogen gas, as the main component of air, has been used for mass ammonia production for over a century, providing enough nutrition for agriculture to support world population increase. In the last decade, researchers have made great efforts to develop ammonia processes under ambient conditions to combat the intensive energy consumption …

Searching for an economical and highly efficient electrocatalytic reduction catalyst for ammonia synthesis under controllable conditions is a very attractive and challenging subject in chemistry. In this study, we systematically studied the electrocatalytic performance of BC3 nanosheets as potential NO reduction reaction (NORR) electrocatalysts using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It was found that BC3 two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit excellent catalytic activity with a very low limiting potential of -0.29/-0.11 V along three reaction paths. The total reaction is NO (g)+5H…

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a dreadful, devastating and incurable motor neuron disease. Aetiologically, it is a multigenic, multifactorial and multiorgan disease. Despite intense research, ALS pathology remains unexplained. Following extensive literature review, this paper posits a new integrative explanation. This framework proposes that ammonia neurotoxicity is a main player in ALS pathogenesis. According to this explanation, a combination of impaired ammonia removal- mainly because of impaired hepatic urea cycle dysfunction-and increased ammoniagenesis- mainly because of impaired…

Ammonia can accumulate in highly stocked sheep accommodation, for example during live export shipments, and could affect sheep health and welfare. Thus, the objective of this experiment was to test the effects of 4 NH(3) concentrations, 4 (control), 12, 21, and 34 mg/m(3), on the physiology and behavior of wether sheep. Sheep were held for 12 d under a micro-climate and stocking density similar to shipboard conditions recorded on voyages from Australia to the Middle East during the northern hemispheric summer. Ammonia increased macrophage activity in transtracheal aspirations, indicating activ…

This review addresses the ammonia fatigue theory in light of new evidence from exercise and disease studies and aims to provide a view of the role of ammonia during exercise. Hyperammonemia is a condition common to pathological liver disorders and intense or exhausting exercise. In pathology, hyperammonemia is linked to impairment of normal brain function and the onset of the neurological condition, hepatic encephalopathy. Elevated blood ammonia concentrations arise due to a diminished capacity for removal via the liver and lead to increased exposure of organs, such as the brain, to the toxic …

Brain edema, due largely to astrocyte swelling, is an important clinical problem in patients with acute liver failure. While mechanisms underlying astrocyte swelling in this condition are not fully understood, ammonia and associated oxidative/nitrosative stress appear to be involved. Mechanisms responsible for the increase in reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS) and their role in ammonia-induced astrocyte swelling, however, are poorly understood. Recent studies have demonstrated a transient increase in intracellular Ca2+ in cultured astrocytes exposed to ammonia. As Ca2+ is a known inducer …

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with severe liver disease. Although the mechanisms responsible for HE remain elusive, ammonia is generally considered to be involved in its pathogenesis, and astrocytes are thought to be the principal target of ammonia neurotoxicity. Altered bioenergetics and oxidative stress are also thought to play a major role in this disorder. In this paper, we present data invoking the mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) as a factor in the pathogenesis of HE/hyperammonemia. The MPT is a Ca2+-dependent, cyclosp…

Klebsiella oxytoca, isolated from cyanide-containing industrial wastewater, was shown to be able to biodegrade cyanide to non-toxic endproducts using cyanide as the sole nitrogen source. In this study, ammonia was one of the detected endproduct of cyanide biodegradation by the concentrated resting cells of K. oxytoca. Moreover, cyanide has been shown to be biotransformed to methane through the actions of concentrated resting cells. Biodegradation of cyanide by cell-free extracts was not observed, which might be due to the inactivation of nitrogenase (an oxygen-labial enzyme) caused by the oxyg…

There appears to be a consensus that hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a metabolic encephalopathy with a multifactorial pathogenesis. One of the factors considered to be important in the pathogenesis of HE is ammonia. However, the mechanisms by which ammonia contributes to the manifestations of HE remain poorly defined. Ammonia could be more definitively implicated in the pathogenesis of HE if its effects can be shown to lead to an enhancement of inhibitory neurotransmission. In this context the effects of ammonia on the GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) neurotransmitter system may be relevant. Ammo…
