We found multiple aneurysms in the intracranial arteries and abdominal aorta of an 87-year-old Korean female cadaver, whose cause of death was reported as "cholangiocarcinoma." An abdominal aortic aneurysm was observed in the infrarenal aorta, where the inferior mesenteric artery arose. The intracranial aneurysms were found in the A3 segment of the anterior cerebral artery and at the bifurcation of the middle cerebral artery. This case provides an example of the very rare association of peripheral intracranial aneurysms with an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Clinicians as well as anatomists should…

Anatomical variations in relation to coronary artery and its branches will help cardiac surgeons for refining imaging techniques and coronary artery bypass grafting. A heart was detected with multiple anomalies of coronary arteries in a cadaver. The anomalies of coronary arteries in terms of origin, number of ostia, courses, and presence of myocardial bridges were described, and related clinical implications were highlighted in the present study. The knowledge of variant anatomy may be of paramount importance to anatomists for variant anatomy and to cardiac surgeon for proper diagnosis and tre…

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most common operations in a junior surgical resident's postgraduate training. Short recall courses can improve junior residents' anatomy knowledge and results in better surgical outcomes. We aimed to investigate the effect of a short course on anatomical competency during inguinal hernia repairs.
METHODS: During the first 25 inguinal hernia repairs, two junior residents were asked to identify iliohypogastric, ilioinguinal, and genital branch of genitofemoral nerves. Then, the residents were given a short recall course by anatomists. Aft…

Filippo Pacini was an Italian anatomist whose work significantly contributed to sensory physiology and microbiology. He first described specialized mechanoreceptors, later termed Pacinian corpuscles, recognizing their connection to nerves and role in tactile perception. Although initially overlooked, his findings became fundamental to modern aesthesiology. Pacini also identified Vibrio cholerae as the cause of cholera, anticipating key developments in epidemiology. This article contextualizes his discoveries within 19thcentury scientific debates and highlights the originality and lasting impac

Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond syndrome (OMIM 260400) was identified in 1964 by pediatricians Harry Shwachman, a leader in cystic fibrosis, and Louis K. Diamond, a hematologist, along with pediatrician and morbid anatomist Martin Bodian. Initially the syndrome's clinical presentation included exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (lipomatous replacement of the pancreas) and neutropenia. In 1967 skeletal changes of metaphyseal chondrodysplasia were also described, completing the triad of findings; these abnormalities are present in all affected children and should be viewed as an integral feature of the

The extensor digitorum brevis manus is a supernumerary muscle of the dorsum of hand and is a relatively rare finding during dissection. Only 2-3% of the cases are found world wide. Here we report the case of extensor digitorum brevis manus in an approximately 65-year-old Indian male cadaver. This report discusses the variant anatomy, morphology, review of literature and clinical implications of this muscle. We believe that it is of importance to report the observation of this muscle as the variation reported herein should be of interest to clinicians, surgeons and anatomists for academic purpo…

Since the initial zoological description of "Trichina spiralis" (later renamed "Trichinella spiralis") by Owen in 1835 several other scientists had observed trichinas in human muscles, when an inglorious dispute about priorities arose between the anatomists Kobelt and Bischoff at the Heidelberg University in 1840 because of one of those findings. The genesis of trichinosis was only to be explained in 1860 by Zenker, while Bischoff, who was among the leading 19th century embryologists, then still believed in a "generatio spontanea" as it has been described in the context of the chronological ou…

Although the cephalic vein follows a fairly consistent course, numerous variants have been reported. We found a rare anatomical presentation of the cephalic vein in a 43-year-old Korean male cadaver. The cephalic vein had anastomosed with the basilic vein and brachial vein at the level of the elbow, perforated the pectoralis major muscle between the clavicular and sternal heads, and then entered into one of the double axillary veins. Knowledge of the variations on the cephalic vein is important for clinicians as well as anatomists since the approach through the axillary base is favoured in man…

In the following review, the development of the thorax and abdomen, as described by embryologists and anatomists in modern embryological text books, is compared with sonoanatomic descriptions from 2D and 3D ultrasound studies, week by week in the first trimester. The anatomic descriptions are limited to details that are of interest for the understanding of ultrasound examinations. For the second and third trimester, the description of the sonographic development of the thorax and abdomen is divided into thoracic skeleton, diaphragm, lungs, oesophagus, stomach, liver, spleen, bowel and gall bla…

More than 60 years ago an anatomist, Dudley Morton, and an orthopaedic surgeon, Paul Lapidus, independently published similar theories that implicated excessive mobility of the first metatarsal in forefoot dysfunction. Morton first studied in detail the evolution of the foot leading to bipedal gait and then examined the feet of many of his students in an attempt to correlate his tentative assumptions with the presence of or lack of symptoms. Morton's analysis of forefoot dysfunction provides the foundation of modern surgical procedures that restore normal forefoot balance and function to asymp

Edward Jenner is renowned for developing a vaccination for smallpox. He trained as a surgeon and was an ardent anatomist and naturalist. Part of his formal training was directed by John Hunter, the father of scientific surgery. Jenner diagnosed Hunter as suffering from angina pectoris and correctly identified the cause of angina pectoris from a series of autopsies he conducted. After Hunter died during an altercation in committee, his postmortem examination proved Jenner correct. Jenner can be recognized as the first to correctly ascribe the etiology of angina pectoris to coronary atherosclero

Standard cutaneous innervation maps show strict midline demarcation. Although authors of these maps accept variability of peripheral nerve distribution or occasionally even the midline overlap of cutaneous nerves, this concept seems to be neglected by many other anatomists. To support the statement that such transmedian overlap exists, we performed an extensive literature search and found ample evidence for all regions (head/neck, thorax/abdomen, back, perineum, and genitalia) that peripheral nerves cross the midline or communicate across the midline. This concept has substantial clinical impl…

Freeze-etch preparations of mesothelial cells taken from the peritoneum of mouse reveal the presence of vesicles invaginating the apical and … heory advanced by physiologists and the "stomata" concept observed by early German and contemporary anatomists. "Occludens" junctions of the leaky type are seen though their macular or zonular nature is yet to be established.

The presentation and management of two bizarre congenital cephalic curiosities at the two extremes of the clinical spectrum are discussed herewith. Case 1: presented to us as a neonate with a scalp swelling mirror-imaging her head and face. The journey from clinics to wards and to the operation theatre and to her home is introspected. Case 2: presented to us as dicephalous dibrachius dipus parapagus conjoined twins. The detailed work-up of individual organ systems, the multidisciplinary approach to management and the final outcome are discussed. This is an unsolved mystery for the anatomists, …

Bell palsy, named after the Scottish anatomist Sir Charles Bell, is the most common acute mononeuropathy, or disorder affecting a single nerve, and is the most common diagnosis associated with facial nerve weakness/paralysis. In the past 2 years, both the American Academy of Neurology and the Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation have published clinical practice guidelines aimed at improving the quality of care and outcomes for patients diagnosed with Bell palsy. This commentary aims to address the similarities and differences in the scope and final recommendations made by

Sir Astley Paston Cooper (1768-1841) was a successful and influential British surgeon during the early decades of the 19th century. He was a dedicated anatomist, an accomplished researcher, an inspiring teacher, and a skillful surgeon. Cooper published about the cause and treatment of Dupuytren's disease 10 years before Dupuytren. His contributions were widespread and substantially advanced the understanding and treatment of breast disease, vascular aneurysms, and abdominal wall hernias, along with orthopedic, otologic, and hand surgery. His contributions to surgical science have endured and a

To the anatomist, the antecubital fossa is the space through which the principal vascular and nervous trunks pass into the forearm. To the surgeon it is also the site of possible injury to the brachial artery in fractures around the elbow, with the risk of Volkmann's ischaemic contracture constantly in mind. It is here where the surgeon is tempted to use the large superficial veins for venous access, but knows only too well the dangers of inadvertent intra-arterial or intraneural injection - something that may well be encountered in a 'main-line' drug addict. It is also a convenient site for a

The first true anatomical descriptions of the normal anatomy of the palate and pharynx were published by Von Luschka in 1868, and then in 1935 anatomist James Whillis described pharyngeal sphincter. Later, in 1941 Michael Oldfield noted that the muscular elements of the soft palate have a sling-like function. Although there have been conflicting descriptions of the role of the palatopharyngeus, multiple function such as speech, swallowing, and respiration, it could role in all this function. Although, the palatopharyngeus muscle has many important functions, but it remains the missing muscle t
