Organophosphate Esters and Their Metabolites in Commercially Available Preprepared Dishes: Occurrence, Migration from Food Contact Materials, and Dietary Exposure.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are used as flame retardants and plasticizers and may enter preprepared dishes through raw materials, processing, and migration from food contact materials (FCMs). In this study, 28 OPEs and 13 mOPEs were determined in 347 commercially available preprepared dish samples purchased in Beijing, China, and migration experiments were conducted using 42 independent FCM samples. OPEs were widely detected in preprepared dishes (median: 9.04 ng/g wet weight (ww)), while mOPEs had much lower levels (median of 1.40 ng/g ww). Compared with fresh animal-origin foods, the dishe

Population-level impacts of reducing artificial light at night across an entire migratory corridor.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is a widespread anthropogenic pollution that poses challenges for wildlife in nearly every ecosystem on planet Earth. Although there has been substantial progress on understanding the effects of ALAN on animal physiology and behaviour, few studies have estimated its population-level impacts in the wild, leaving the potential conservation benefits of ALAN reduction unresolved. Here, we evaluated the population-level effect of ALAN reduction through its impact on juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) vulnerability to predation during oceanward migrat

Navigator-3, a modulator of cell migration, may act as a suppressor of breast cancer progression.

Dissemination of primary tumor cells depends on migratory and invasive attributes. Here, we identify Navigator-3 (NAV3), a gene frequently mutated or deleted in human tumors, as a regulator of epithelial migration and invasion. Following induction by growth factors, NAV3 localizes to the plus ends of microtubules and enhances their polarized growth. Accordingly, NAV3 depletion trimmed microtubule growth, prolonged growth factor signaling, prevented apoptosis and enhanced random cell migration. Mathematical modeling suggested that NAV3-depleted cells acquire an advantage in terms of the way the

FTY720, a sphingosine-1 phosphate receptor modulator, improves liver fibrosis in a mouse model by impairing the motility of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells.

FTY720 is a novel immunosuppressant that modulates sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) receptors for the treatment of several diseases. Several hallmarks of liver fibrosis are influenced by S1P, and the interference of S1P signaling by treatment with FTY720 results in beneficial effects in various animal models of fibrosis. However, whether these treatment strategies suppress liver fibrosis progression is incompletely understood. Here, we investigated the effects and mechanisms by which FTY720 improves liver fibrosis in the carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced mouse model. FTY720 treatment significan

Characterizing Cell Migration Within Three-dimensional In Vitro Wound Environments.

Currently, most in vitro models of wound healing, such as well-established scratch assays, involve studying cell migration and wound closure on two-dimensional surfaces. However, the physiological environment in which in vivo wound healing takes place is three-dimensional rather than two-dimensional. It is becoming increasingly clear that cell behavior differs greatly in two-dimensional vs. three-dimensional environments; therefore, there is a need for more physiologically relevant in vitro models for studying cell migration behaviors in wound closure. The method described herein allows for th

Inhibitory effects of salmosin, a disintegrin, on posterior capsular opacification in vitro and in vivo.

The proliferation, migration and transdifferentiation of the remaining lens epithelial cells (LECs) after cataract surgery are a major cause of posterior capsular opacification (PCO). It has previously been reported that salmosin, a novel disintegrin, significantly inhibits solid tumor growth in mice by perturbation of tumor-specific angiogenesis via blocking alpha v beta 3 integrin expressed on vascular endothelial cells. In this study, the inhibitory function of salmosin in PCO was investigated and was found that salmosin inhibits the attachment of bovine LECs and rabbit lens cells (N/N1003A

The diagnostic roles of neutrophil in bloodstream infections.

Bloodstream infections remain a leading cause of death worldwide, despite advances in critical care and understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment strategies. No specific biomarkers or therapy are available for these conditions. Neutrophils play a critical role in controlling infection and it is suggested that their migration and antimicrobial activity are impaired during sepsis which contribute to the dysregulation of immune responses. Recent studies further demonstrated that interruption or reversal of the impaired migration and antimicrobial function of neutrophils improves the outc

Effect of animal venom toxins on the main links of the homeostasis of mammals (Review).

The human body is affected by environmental factors. The dynamic balance between the organism and its environment results from the influence of natural, anthropogenic and social aspects. The factors of exogenous origin determine development of adaptive changes. The present article summarises the mechanisms of animal venom toxins and homeostasis disruption in the body of mammals. The mechanisms underlying pathological changes are associated with shifts in biochemical reactions. Components of the immune, nervous and endocrine systems are key in the host defense and adaptation processes in respon

SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling factor BAF60b restrains inflammatory diseases by affecting regulatory T cell migration.

Regulatory T (Treg) cells play a critical regulatory role in the immune system by suppressing excessive immune responses and maintaining immune balance. The effective migration of Treg cells is crucial for controlling the development and progression of inflammatory diseases. However, the mechanisms responsible for directing Treg cells into the inflammatory tissue remain incompletely elucidated. In this study, we identified BAF60b, a subunit of switch/sucrose nonfermentable (SWI/SNF) chromatin remodeling complexes, as a positive regulator of Treg cell migration that inhibits the progression of

Immunosuppression promotes endogenous neural stem and progenitor cell migration and tissue regeneration after ischemic injury.

Recent work has demonstrated that self-repair in the adult brain can be augmented by the infusion of growth factors to activate endogenous neural precursor cells that contribute to new tissue formation and functional recovery in a model of stroke. Using both a genetic model and drug treatment, we demonstrate that immunosuppression mimics the effects of growth factor activation, including tissue regeneration, neural precursor cell migration and functional recovery following ischemic injury. In the absence of growth factor treatment, mice with a functional immune system develop a prominent cavit

Contralaterally transplanted human embryonic stem cell-derived neural precursor cells (ENStem-A) migrate and improve brain functions in stroke-damaged rats.

The transplantation of neural precursor cells (NPCs) is known to be a promising approach to ameliorating behavioral deficits after stroke in a rodent model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo). Previous studies have shown that transplanted NPCs migrate toward the infarct region, survive and differentiate into mature neurons to some extent. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics of NPC migration following transplantation into stroke animals have yet to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the fates of human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived NPCs (ENStem-A) for 8 weeks following tr

Epstein-Barr virus induces aberrant B cell migration and diapedesis via FAK-dependent chemotaxis pathways.

Infection with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a major risk factor for the development of cancer and autoimmune disorders. The virus enters the body in the pharynx, but EBV causes disease in distant organs, including the gut and the brain. Here we show, using in vitro culture and mouse infection models, that EBV-infected B cells display features of homing cells. Infected B cells undergo migration following paracrine CCL4 release and CCR1 induction, while CCR1 deficiency inhibits migration and, unexpectedly, proliferation of infected B cells. Furthermore, migrating EBV-infected B cells undergo

Hif-1α/Slit2 Mediates Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Phenotypic Changes in Restenosis of Bypass Grafts.

Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are involved in restenosis of bypass grafts and cause artery graft occlusion. This study aimed to explore the role of Slit2 in phenotypic switching of VSMCs and its effect on restenosis of vascular conduits. An animal model of vascular graft restenosis (VGR) was produced in SD rats and assessed by echocardiography. The expression of Slit2 and Hif-1α was measured in vivo and in vitro. After Slit2 overexpression, the migration and proliferation of VSMCs were detected in vitro, and the restenosis rates and phenotype of VSMCs were tested in vivo. The arteries o

Cryptosporidium parvum-induced ileo-caecal adenocarcinoma and Wnt signaling in a mouse model.

Cryptosporidium species are apicomplexan protozoans that are found worldwide. These parasites constitute a large risk to human and animal health. They cause self-limited diarrhea in immunocompetent hosts and a life-threatening disease in immunocompromised hosts. Interestingly, Cryptosporidium parvum has been related to digestive carcinogenesis in humans. Consistent with a potential tumorigenic role of this parasite, in an original reproducible animal model of chronic cryptosporidiosis based on dexamethasone-treated or untreated adult SCID mice, we formerly reported that C. parvum (strains of a

Chimeric analysis of hemopoietic cells after cross-sex parabiosis.

Anemia or polycythemia was induced in male rats. These males were conjugated with healthy, untreated female litter mates by FANG'S method of aortic parabiosis that resulted in complete cross circulation of blood between the two animals. The sex chromosomes of cells in erythropoiesis in various hemopoietic organs were examined in the treated male animals. The anemic parabionts indicated sharp increases in chimerical rates with erythroid marrows being evident. Polycythemic parabionts indicated marked decreases in chimerical rates with evidence of myeloid marrows. These findings suggested that th

Cell-mediated immune response to products of Actinomyces viscosus cultures.

Hartley strain guinea pigs were sensitized with 0.5 ml of concentrated cell-free Actinomyces viscosus culture supernatant fluids mixed with Freund complete adjuvant. Fourteen to 16 days later the animals were challenged by intradermal injection with 0.1 ml of the culture supernatant, and the reactions were observed at 4, 8, 16, 24, and 48 h. Peritoneal exudate cells from sensitized animals were used for determination of migration inhibition factor, and guinea pig peripheral blood served as a source of cells for determining the induction of mitogenesis by antigenic material. Skin responses were

Poly-ADP-ribose polymerase inhibition enhances ischemic and diabetic wound healing by promoting angiogenesis.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic nonhealing wounds are a major health problem for patients in the United States and worldwide. Diabetes and ischemia are two major risk factors behind impaired healing of chronic lower extremity wounds. Poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) is found to be overactivated with both ischemic and diabetic conditions. This study seeks a better understanding of the role of PARP in ischemic and diabetic wound healing, with a specific focus on angiogenesis and vasculogenesis. METHODS: Ischemic and diabetic wounds were created in FVB/NJ mice and an in vitro scratch wound model. PARP inhib

Emigration of silver eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) from the Great Masurian Lakes complex in the southeastern Baltic region.

Obstacles encountered by downstream migrating European eels during their spawning migration are among the primary causes of their population decline. River regulation and hydrotechnical infrastructure play a crucial role in this process. Fish reaching migration barriers often interrupt their journey, while those passing through hydroelectric turbines frequently suffer fatal injuries. Using acoustic telemetry, the downstream migration of silver eels from a large lake complex in northern Poland was tracked. Along their route, the fish encountered small hydropower plant (SHP) equipped with Kaplan

Space weather disrupts nocturnal bird migration.

Space weather, including solar storms, can impact Earth by disturbing the geomagnetic field. Despite the known dependence of birds and other animals on geomagnetic cues for successful seasonal migrations, the potential effects of space weather on organisms that use Earth's magnetic field for navigation have received little study. We tested whether space weather geomagnetic disturbances are associated with disruptions to bird migration at a macroecological scale. We leveraged long-term radar data to characterize the nightly migration dynamics of the nocturnally migrating North American avifauna

Morphology, biochemistry and connectivity of Cluster N and the hippocampal formation in a migratory bird.

The exceptional navigational capabilities of migrating birds are based on the perception and integration of a variety of natural orientation cues. The "Wulst" in the forebrain of night-migratory songbirds contains a brain area named "Cluster N", which is involved in processing directional navigational information derived from the Earth´s magnetic field. Cluster N is medially joined by the hippocampal formation, known to retrieve and utilise navigational information. To investigate the connectivity and neurochemical characteristics of Cluster N and the hippocampal formation of migratory birds,
