Evaluating the effectiveness of limestone and eggshell waste as cement replacements - a review.

The increasing focus on environmental sustainability has sparked global interest in substituting cement with materials derived from industrial and agricultural waste. As cement manufacturing is a major source of CO₂ emissions, and waste generation continues to rise, repurposing these byproducts as Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) presents an eco-friendly solution. This approach not only reduces environmental harm and conserves natural resources but also improves the properties of cement-based composites. This review explores the potential of Waste Limestone Powder (WLP), an industri

Unexpected morphological variability in the eggshells of the South American caimans Caiman latirostris and Caiman yacare.

Eggshell morphology is a valuable indicator of the local conditions within the nests of modern crocodilians and birds. In contrast to these latter, the anatomical structure of the eggshells of most crocodilian species is practically unknown. Here, we provide the first characterization of crocodilian eggshells, using x-ray micro-CT scans. We studied eggshells of Caiman latirostris and Caiman yacare from various developmental stages that coincide with the beginning of embryonic ossification. The new 3D renderings revealed complex ornamentation, unique among crocodilians, and amphora-shaped pore

Selectivity of SO2 and H2S removal by ethanol-treated calcined eggshell at low temperature.

Eggshell is a food waste produced worldwide in substantial amount with very limited recycling activity. In this study, the potential of ethanol-treated calcined eggshell was tested as sorbent for SO2 and H2S. Three variables were selected in the preparation of sorbents via response surface methodology (RSM), i.e., concentration of ethanol in water (50%, 70%, 90%), reaction temperature (20 °C, 40 °C, 60 °C), and contact time (30, 60, 90 min). Central composite design (CCD) was used to develop a quadratic model to correlate the operating variables with the adsorption capacity. Analysis of varian

A critical evaluation of the utility of eggshells for estimating mercury concentrations in avian eggs.

Eggshells are a potential tool for nonlethally sampling contaminant concentrations in bird eggs, yet few studies have examined their utility to represent mercury exposure. We assessed mercury concentrations in eggshell components for 23 bird species and determined whether they correlated with total mercury (THg) in egg contents. We designed a multi-experiment analysis to examine how THg is partitioned into eggshell components, specifically hardened eggshells, material adhered to the eggshells, and inner eggshell membranes. The THg concentrations in eggshells were much lower than in egg content

Distinctive Neuroanatomic Regions Involved in Cocaine-Induced Behavioral Sensitization in Mice.

The present study aimed to characterize the phenomenon of behavioral sensitization to cocaine and to identify neuroanatomical structures involved in the induction and expression phases of this phenomenon. For this, in experiment 1 (induction phase), mice were treated with saline or cocaine every second day for 15 days (conditioning period), in the open-field or in their home-cages. In experiment 2 (expression phase), the same protocol was followed, except that after the conditioning period the animals were not manipulated for 10 days, and after this interval, animals were challenged with cocai

The controlling role of nitric oxide within the shell of nucleus accumbens in the stress-induced metabolic disturbance.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVES: The involvement of the nitricergic system within the shell part of the nucleus accumbens (NAc) was evaluated in the metabolic disturbances due to stress. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Wistar rats were cannulated in the shell of the left NAc. They received either saline or different doses of L-arginine and/or L-NAME five minutes before each stress session, for four days. Plasma cortisol concentration, food and water intake, time elapsing for eating, animal weight changes and adrenal gland weight were recorded. RESULTS: The L-arginine 1 μg/rat decreased the level of corti

Caenorhabditis elegans body mechanics are regulated by body wall muscle tone.

Body mechanics in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans are central to both mechanosensation and locomotion. Previous work revealed that the mechanics of the outer shell, rather than internal hydrostatic pressure, dominates stiffness. This shell is comprised of the cuticle and the body wall muscles, either of which could contribute to the body mechanics. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the muscles are an important contributor by modulating muscle tone using optogenetic and pharmacological tools, and measuring animal stiffness using piezoresistive microcantilevers. As a proxy for muscle tone,

A Comparative Experimental and Computational Study on the Nature of the Pangolin-CoV and COVID-19 Omicron.

The relationship between pangolin-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 has been a subject of debate. Further evidence of a special relationship between the two viruses can be found by the fact that all known COVID-19 viruses have an abnormally hard outer shell (low M disorder, i.e., low content of intrinsically disordered residues in the membrane (M) protein) that so far has been found in CoVs associated with burrowing animals, such as rabbits and pangolins, in which transmission involves virus remaining in buried feces for a long time. While a hard outer shell is necessary for viral survival, a harder inner sh

Isolation, identification and characterization of Aeromonas jandaei from diseased Chinese soft-shell turtles.

Aeromonas jandaei is a gram-negative bacterium commonly found in aquatic environments and can induce illnesses in amphibians, reptiles and aquatic animals. In this study, a strain of bacteria was isolated from the diseased Chinese soft-shell turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis), then named strain JDP-FX. This isolate was identified as A. jandaei after analysis of morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics, as well as 16S rRNA and gyrB gene sequences. Virulence genetic testing further detected temperature-sensitive protease (eprCAI), type III secretion system (TTSS) (ascv), nuclease (

Habitat rather than phylogeny may explain exoskeleton composition of three common land crabs from Christmas Island.

Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean hosts large populations of land crabs, including the gecarcinids Gecarcoidea natalis and Tuerkayana celeste and the grapsid Geograpsis grayi. All three have transitioned into terrestrial habitats via marine environments, but through different evolutionary routes, and with different life history traits. These species provide an opportunity to investigate the incorporation of chitin, protein and minerals (particularly calcium and magnesium carbonates) into the arthropod exoskeleton given their shared terrestrial transition, but different evolutionary historie

Dead Matter, Living Machines: Repurposing Crustaceans' Abdomen Exoskeleton for Bio-Hybrid Robots.

Bio-hybrid robots utilize living organisms for robot design, however, their use of living bodies makes maintenance, control, and fabrication of robot challenging. As an alternative, exoskeletons stand out for retaining mobility after the organism's death, making them an accessible candidate. In particular, crustacean exoskeletons, often discarded as food waste, provide both structural strength and flexibility from their segmented rigid shell. By repurposing dead animals' part from bio-waste, a sustainable cyclic design process is proposed in which materials can be recycled and adapted for new

Genome of the enigmatic watering-pot shell and morphological adaptations for anchoring in sediment.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we present the first chromosome-scale genome of Verpa penis (Linnaeus, 1758), and the first for the bivalve clade Anomalodesmata. The present study has two separate foci. Primarily, we provide the genetic resource to bridge further studies from genome to phenome and propose hypotheses to guide future empirical investigations. Secondarily, based on morphology, we outline a conceptual exploration to address their adaptation. Watering-pot shells have been called "the weirdest bivalves" for their fused tubular shell resembling the spout of a watering can. This adventitio

In Vitro and In Vivo Bone Regeneration Assessment of Titanium-Doped Waste Eggshell-Derived Hydroxyapatite in the Animal Model.

In this work, a titanium-doped hydroxyapatite (HAp) scaffold was produced from two different sources (natural eggshell and laboratory-grade reagents) to compare the efficacy of natural and synthetic resources of HAp materials on new bone regeneration. This comparative study also reports the effect of Ti doping on the physical, mechanical, and in vitro as well as in vivo biological properties of the HAp scaffold. Pellets were prepared in the conventional powder metallurgy route, compacted, and sintered at 900 °C, showing sufficient porosity for bony ingrowth. The physical-mechanical characteriz

Improvement of eggshell quality by dietary N-carbamylglutamate supplementation in laying chickens.

Egg quality defects seriously reduce the quality grade and increase egg breakage in egg marketing activities. In this study, the effect of N-carbamylglutamate (NCG) on eggshell quality was investigated by evaluating calcium absorption and calcification in laying hens. A total of 30 newly hatched female Hy-Line chicks were randomly assigned to the control group (basal diet) and treatment group (basal diet supplemented with 1% NCG). At 25 wk, eggs from each group were obtained to assess egg quality parameters. Blood samples were collected for analysis of mineral, hormone, and amino acids levels

Sensitivity of pteropod calcification to multi stressor variability in coastal habitats.

Comprehensive understanding of environmental multiple stressors on calcification in marine calcifiers remains an important topic of study, especially under ocean global change associated with multiple stressors. We explore the impact of multiple stressor on pteropod calcification in the southern Salish Sea (Washington, U.S.), a coastal estuarine system that exhibits a high degree of spatial and temporal variability in multiple environmental parameters across sampling locations. We hypothesized that such variability is associated with differences in pteropod calcification. Shell thickness and s

Biomineral crystallographic preferred orientation in Solenogastres molluscs (Aplacophora) is controlled by organic templating.

Aplacophoran molluscs are shell-less and have a worm-like body which is covered by biomineralized sclerites. We investigated sclerite crystallography and the sclerite mosaic of the Solenogastres species Dorymenia sarsii, Anamenia gorgonophila, and Simrothiella margaritacea with electron-backscattered-diffraction (EBSD), laser-confocal-microscopy and FE-SEM imaging. The soft tissue of the molluscs is covered by spicule-shaped, aragonitic sclerites. These are sub-parallel to the soft body of the organism. We find, for all three species, that individual sclerites are untwinned aragonite single cr

Physical and Chemical Interactions with Conspecifics Mediate Sex Change in a Protandrous Gastropod Crepidula fornicata.

The protandrous marine snail Crepidula fornicata has been a theoretical and empirical model for studies of sex change for many decades. We investigated the social conditions under which sex change occurs in this species by manipulating physical and chemical contact with conspecifics. Male snails were either in physical and chemical contact with females or in chemical contact with, but physically isolated from, females. Males were tested both with living females and with empty, sterilized shells. Males that were physically touching a living female were less likely to change sex than the isolate

Gene transfer of GLT-1, a glutamate transporter, into the nucleus accumbens shell attenuates methamphetamine- and morphine-induced conditioned place preference in rats.

Several lines of evidence have suggested that the glutamatergic system in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) plays an important role in the conditioned rewarding effect of drugs of abuse. In addition, it is recognized that extracellular glutamate is rapidly removed from the synaptic cleft by Na+-dependent glutamate transporters in neurons and glial cells, thereby maintaining physiological levels of glutamate. We previously reported that activation of glutamate uptake by a glutamate transporter activator attenuated the acquisition of conditioned place preference induced by methamphetamine and morphine

Sustained release of bupivacaine for post-surgical pain relief using core-shell microspheres.

Core-shell polymer microspheres with poly(d,l-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) core and poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) shell were developed for sustained release of bupivacaine for postoperative pain relief after knee surgery. The PLLA-rich shell acted as a diffusion barrier, allowing linear release of bupivacaine in a goat model over an extended period of 2 weeks post-surgery. In vivo bupivacaine concentrations in the goat synovial fluid remained within therapeutic levels for the 2 weeks, whereas bupivacaine concentrations in the blood plasma remained safely below toxic levels. All animals survive

Isolation of 16 strains of Coxiella burnetii from patients by using a sensitive centrifugation cell culture system and establishment of the strains in HEL cells.

Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, may be acute or chronic. Only a few strains of C. burnetii have been isolated due to the difficulty and hazard of isolation. We report here the isolation using a centrifugation shell vial technique of 16 new strains from patients suffering chronic Q fever. Twenty-four samples were inoculated onto human embryonic lung (HEL) fibroblast cell monolayers growing in shell vials. C. burnetii was detected 6 days later by using immunofluorescence. Samples from valves (n = 10), arterial prostheses (n = 2), bone (n = 3), skin biopsy (n = 1), bone marrow (n = 1), and
