Phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from zoo and wild animals.

Antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus aureus is a major problem in human and veterinary medicine. The aim of this study was to characterise S. aureus isolates from wild and zoo animals mainly associated with bacterial infections. In total, 23 S. aureus isolates, including nine from wild animals and 14 from zoo animals, were obtained during routine diagnostics. All isolates were subjected to multilocus sequence typing (MLST), spa typing, macrorestriction analysis with subsequent SmaI pulsed-field gelelectrophoresis (PFGE), antimicrobial susceptibility testing and S. aureus-specific DNA-mic

Wild and domestic animals likely involved in rickettsial endemic zones of Northwestern Colombia.

Between 2006 and 2008, three outbreaks of human rickettsiosis occurred in Northwestern Colombia (municipalities of Necoclí, Los Córdobas and Turbo), with case fatality rates between 27% and 54%. The aim of this study was to determine previous exposure of wild and domestic animals to spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae through serological tests, to detect rickettsial evidence in their ectoparasites, and to analyze their possible role in the epidemiology of rickettsial diseases in this zone of the country. A cross-sectional association study was performed from 2010 to 2011. Blood and ectoparas

Unusual injuries on the right hand and forearm caused by unidentified wild animals.

An old man was found dead in a rice paddy with his face down in the water. His right forearm and hand were severely injured and the shapes of injuries were unusual. It was initially suspected that the injuries had been caused by a cultivator placed at the site. However, they proved to be postmortem injuries because vital reactions were not observed. The skin was widely torn away. Some edges of the injuries looked like a bite mark and other parts looked like scratches. There were many parallel injuries on the right forearm and hand and footmark-like injuries on the right hand. They were probabl

Traumatic myiasis in wild animals admitted to a rehabilitation center in southeastern Turkey.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Traumatic myiasis develops when dipteran larvae colonize pre-existing wounds and may complicate the management of injured wildlife. Wildlife-associated cases remain insufficiently documented, particularly in reptiles and wild ungulates. This study aimed to characterize traumatic myiasis in wild animals admitted to a rehabilitation center in southeastern Turkey and to identify the causative dipteran species using integrated morphological and molecular approaches. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight wild animals with traumatic myiasis admitted between December 2020 and Septe

A novel coproparasitological diagnostic technique in wild animals: agreement with established reference methods.

Coproparasitological examinations are essential non-invasive tools for detecting endoparasites in wild animals; however, the lack of methodological standardization and the variable performance of available techniques remain important challenges. This study evaluated the agreement and comparative performance of the Simplified Parasite Detection Method (SPDM) relative to three routinely used coproparasitological comparator methods: spontaneous sedimentation, Willis-Mollay flotation, and Mini-FLOTAC®. A total of 143 pooled fecal samples from mammals, birds, and reptiles were analyzed. Overall, SP

Identification of parasitic arthropods collected from domestic and wild animals in Yucatan, Mexico.

The morphological characterization of ectoparasites from domestic and wild animals is crucial to distinguish those that may be involved in the transmission of zoonotic pathogens. The objectives of this work were to identify parasitic arthropods collected from several hosts in Yucatan State, Mexico and to determine the prevalence of the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi in sylvatic specimens of Triatoma dimidiata. Morphological traits and scanning electron microscopy were used to confirm some parasitic identities. In total, 834 parasitic arthropods of various taxa were identified. Amblyomma americanum

Ophthalmological abnormalities in wild European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus): a survey of 300 animals.

In this study we aimed to examine wild European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) in rescue centres and to determine ocular abnormalities in this animal population. Three hundred animals varying in age from 2 months to 5 years were examined, 147 being male and 153 female. All animals were evaluated with direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy and slit lamp biomicroscopy in animals where lesions were detected. Tonometry using the Tonovet rebound tonometer was undertaken in selected animals as was assessment of tear production using the Schirmer I tear test. Four animals were affected by orbital infect

Molecular identification of Spirometra spp. (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) in some wild animals from Brazil.

Species of the genus Spirometra are diphyllobothriid tapeworms with complex life cycles and are involved in human sparganosis, a neglected disease that affects individuals worldwide. Although some species were reported in wild felids and human cases of sparganosis were described in Brazil, the biology and taxonomy of these parasites are poorly understood. In the present study, samples of diphyllobothriids (eggs and/or proglottids) obtained from the stools of wild carnivores (Leopardus pardalis and Lycalopex vetulus) and plerocercoid larvae found in a snake (Crotalus durissus) from Brazil were

Monitoring of rabies in wild animals in the Kirov region after oral immunization.

This work presents the results of the molecular genetic research on genomes of field isolates of the rabies virus circulating in the territory of the Kirov region in order to analyze the phylogenetic relationship between the wild isolate genomes and to determine the possible reversion of the vaccine strain of the rabies virus used in the oral vaccine to virulent variant. We studied 24 brain samples from wild carnivores shot after oral immunization of the area with Rabivak-O/333. A bait with the vaccine provided by the Veterinary Service of the Kirov was also studied. All samples were found to

Prevalence and genotype identification of Toxoplasma gondii in wild animals from southwestern Spain.

We used PCR to detect Toxoplasma gondii in the principal game species in southwestern Spain. We detected T. gondii in 32.2% of animals tested. Prevalences varied from 14.7% in wild boar (Sus scrofa) to 51.2% in red fox (Vulpes vulpes). The most prevalent genotype was type II (50.0%), followed by type III (20.6%) and type I (5.9%). Mixed infections (11.8%) were detected in wild boar (types I+III) and red fox (types II+III). Polymorphic strains (11.8%) were detected in several species. The high prevalence and the genetic variability shown could have implications for infection of farm animals and

Pollution and its impact on wild animals: a meta-analysis on oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress is the unifying feature underlying the toxicity of anthropogenic pollution (e.g., heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and nitrogen-oxides) and the ultimate culprit in the development of many diseases. Yet, there has been no attempt to summarize the published data on wild terrestrial animals to reveal general trends regarding the effects of pollution on oxidative stress. The main findings of this meta-analysis reveal that, as predicted, there is an overall increase in oxidative stress when exposed to pollution. This is mainly due to a weak overall increase of oxidat

Wild pigeons and pheasants--a source of Chlamydophila psittaci for humans and animals.

The authors present results of serological examination in 275 pheasants (Phaisanus colchicus) and 273 pigeons (Columba livia f. domestica) for the presence of Chlamydophila (Ch) psittaci IgG antibodies. Using micromethod of complement fixation (CF) test with genus-specific antigen Ch. psittaci (Bioveta, Ivanovice na Hané, Czech Republic), the seropositivity in pheasants oscillated between 31.5-40.4 %. No clinical signs of chlamydiosis were detected in pheasants under study. The seropositivity in pigeons ranged between 33.1-85.1%. Total 77.1% positivity with maximal 1:1024 antibody titre was fo
