We report human infections with Necator gorillae and Strongyloides fuelleborni, zoonotic helminths from nonhuman primates, in Gabon. We also detected a cryptic Ancylostoma species helminth. Infections occurred in settings of localized deforestation and environmental degradation, which increase human-animal contact. Surveillance to clarify the extent of human infections is needed.

Human activities such as habitat degradation and fragmentation threaten biodiversity in Neotropical areas. This work proposes an analytical methodology to identify natural areas in Central America with anthropogenic impact, analyzing the presence of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in accordance with their theoretical relationship with human-related activities. Sixteen ARGs were quantified in feces of different individuals of 13 jaguars (Panthera onca) and 13 pumas (Puma concolor) in three conservation areas in Costa Rica by real-time PCR. At least one ARG was detected in all samples. Of

Rabies is a globally prevalent viral zoonosis that causes 59,000 deaths per year and has important economic consequences. Most virus spread is associated with the migration of its primary hosts. Anthropogenic dissemination, mainly via the transportation of rabid dogs, shaped virus ecology a few hundred years ago and is responsible for several current outbreaks. A systematic analysis of aberrant long-distance events in the steppe and Arctic-like groups of rabies virus was performed using statistical (Bayesian) phylogeography and plots of genetic vs. geographic distances. The two approaches prod

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are present in all ecosystems and encode the defences that microorganisms have naturally evolved to defend themselves against antimicrobial agents. The use and synthesis of antibiotics by humans, however, has led to a proliferation of ARGs, resulting in their consideration as emerging environmental pollutants, even in some of the most pristine terrestrial ecosystems on Earth. Here we used shotgun metagenomics to characterise the abundance and diversity of ARGs in 29 maritime Antarctic soils collected in the 2007-2008 austral summer that varied in edaphic cond

About 70 % of zoonotic infectious diseases originate from wildlife reservoirs, particularly bats, primates, and rodents. Bats comprise about 20 % of all known mammal species worldwide and have been identified as reservoir and carrier hosts of various viral disease outbreaks. They also play a crucial role in viral adaptation and evolution. Given this inherent risk, this review focuses on how anthropogenic activities (habitat destruction, agricultural intensification, bushmeat hunting, and occupational exposure) and climate change are increasing the frequency and intensity of bat-human contact.

The growing recognition of the adverse health impacts posed by ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) has driven global efforts to implement stricter regulations on reactive nitrogen emissions, including nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia (NH3). Nevertheless, effective mitigation strategies remain constrained by the gap between precursor emissions and health effects, especially in regions facing compounded PM2.5-O3 pollution. This work models the synergistic health burden from PM2.5-O3 co-exposure and its complex responses to anthropogenic nitrogen emission controls. Our modelin

Anthropogenic disturbances are posing unprecedented challenges to the persistence of ecosystems worldwide. The speed at which these disturbances reach an ecosystem's tolerance thresholds will determine the time available for adaptation and conservation. Here, we aim to calculate the year after which a given environmental stressor permanently exceeds the bounds of an ecosystem's tolerance. Ecosystem thresholds are here defined as limits in a given stressor beyond which ecosystems have showed considerable changes in community assembly and functioning, becoming remnants of what they once were, bu

BACKGROUND: Peru presents a paradigmatic case of hydrological asymmetry, where national water abundance (56,887 m 3/capita/year) masks acute regional scarcity. The Pacific basin, hosting 66.4% of the population, possesses only 1.9% of renewable water resources (1,628 m 3/capita/year), falling below the Falkenmark water stress threshold (1,700 m 3/capita/year). Conversely, the Amazon basin holds 97.8% of resources for 30.4% of the population (183,142 m 3/capita/year). This 112.5-fold asymmetry ratio exceeds comparable international cases (Egypt: 49.2; China: 8.0), yet Peru lacks systemic redist

The Anthropocene is tightly associated with a drastic loss of species worldwide and the disappearance of their key ecosystem functions. The orders Testudines (turtles and tortoises) and Crocodilia (crocodiles, alligators, and gharials) contain numerous threatened, long-lived species for which the functional diversity and potential erosion by anthropogenic impacts remains unknown. Here, we examine 259 (69%) of the existing 375 species of Testudines and Crocodilia, quantifying their life history strategies (i.e., trade-offs in survival, development, and reproduction) from open-access data on dem

The presence of many pathogens varies in a predictable manner with latitude, with infections decreasing from the equator towards the poles. We investigated the geographic trends of pathogens infecting a widely distributed carnivore: the gray wolf (Canis lupus). Specifically, we investigated which variables best explain and predict geographic trends in seroprevalence across North American wolf populations and the implications of the underlying mechanisms. We compiled a large serological dataset of nearly 2000 wolves from 17 study areas, spanning 80° longitude and 50° latitude. Generalized linea

Understanding natural hydrogeochemical processes and anthropogenic disturbances is essential for sustainable groundwater management. This study investigated groundwater hydrogeochemical evolution in Xingtai, North China, using hydrochemical data from three campaigns (2016: n = 61; 2022: n = 89; 2024: n = 48) via integrated approaches including Piper and Gibbs diagrams, ion ratios, chloro-alkaline indices (CAI), principal component analysis (PCA), and nitrate-based health risk assessment. Groundwater was predominantly Ca-HCO3 type but shifted toward Ca-SO4, with Ca-HCO3 decreasing from 83.6% to

Understanding how anthropogenic CO2 emissions (ACE) respond to large-scale systemic disruptions is essential for climate mitigation and environmental management. Here, we develop an interpretable machine learning framework that integrates an XGBoost model with SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) to diagnose how the key drivers of the ACE inventory's spatiotemporal variability evolved in mainland China, using the COVID-19 period as a natural experiment. The framework reliably reproduces spatial and temporal patterns of the inventory and enables systematic diagnostic analysis of predictor impor

Over the years, urban rivers have suffered from environmental degradation due to anthropogenic activities, becoming a public concern. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the spatiotemporal evolution of water quality in the Apodi-Mossoró River, in the urban section of Mossoró-RN, during the dry and rainy seasons. To this end, the physical-chemical and microbiological attributes of water samples collected at six points along the urban stretch of the Apodi-Mossoró River were characterized. Using the water quality data, the Water Quality Index was calculated, and multivariate statist

The interaction between CO2 enrichment and nitrogen uptake under anthropogenic nitrogen inputs in the tropical coastal seas remains poorly understood. In this experimental study, we investigate the effects of elevated CO2 and impacts of various nitrogen sources such as river runoff, submarine groundwater discharge, industrial effluents, and atmospheric deposition, adding on NH4+ and NO3-uptake in tropical coastal waters. Using microcosm experiments along the west coast of India, a representative model system for tropical coastal ecosystems experiencing rapid anthropogenic development, we show

The spatiotemporal variations of five heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, and Zn) in the beach sediments along the Tamil Nadu coast sourced from various anthropogenic activities were assessed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). Various pollution monitoring indices were computed to clearly understand the metal pollution status along the Tamil Nadu coastline. The metal concentrations in sediments were typically higher in the summer season than in the monsoon season. In the monsoon season, metal concentration followed a decreasing order of Zn > Cr > Cu > Pb > Cd, and in the summer season,

The Indo-China Peninsula is a global biodiversity hotspot harboring a high diversity of endemic evergreen tree species, many of which are increasingly threatened from the combined effects of climate change and anthropogenic pressure; yet their future conservation status remains poorly understood. We used an Ensemble of Small Models (ESM) framework to project current and future climatically suitable habitats for three range-restricted evergreen tree species (Quercus austrocochinchinensis, Q. kingiana, and Q. rex) under CMIP6 scenarios, and integrated projections with the Human Footprint Index a

Plastic pollution is pervasive, as it has infiltrated every corner of the planet and the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a depletion in the production, consumption, and disposal of plastics. To find out the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, a comparative assessment of microplastics (MPs) observed before and after the pandemic was evaluated in surface water and sediment from the major rivers of Goa, i.e. Mandovi and Zuari. To comprehend the relative difference in the abundance, characteristics, and source of MPs, samples were examined in both the dry and wet seasons. We found a sharp decrease in th

Groundwater is considered the primary source of agricultural irrigation and drinking water in many regions of the world. La Comarca Lagunera in Mexico is one of the most important metallurgical centers and farming regions. The extensive and intensive agricultural activity in the area has led to a significant increase in pesticide use, resulting in the presence of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides in environmental and biological matrices. This research aims to evaluate the presence of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides in La Comarca Lagunera groundwater and their relati

Excessive nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) inputs from intensive agriculture and rapid urbanization have become major drivers of persistent eutrophication in large lake basins worldwide, posing significant challenges to water quality management even under strict nutrient control on contemporary anthropogenic input. Using the Poyang Lake basin as a case study, we calculated Net Anthropogenic Nitrogen Input (NANI) and Net Anthropogenic Phosphorus Input (NAPI) for 32 sub-basins during 2020-2023 and estimated corresponding riverine nutrient exports. A multifactor mixed-effects regression model was
