Safety and efficacy of ant rush immunotherapy in children.

BACKGROUND: The Rush Immunotherapy (RIT) protocol is a valid alternative in order to reach the maintenance phase early. However, there are s … arding age, gender, an atopic history, or the levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE) sensitization to the ants. Among the 14 patients who experienced a field ant re-sting, 4 (28.5%) patients developed Grade 3 SRs. These Grade 3 reactions were resolved after an increase of the maintenance dose to 0.5 ml of a 1:50 wt/vol. There was a significant difference in …

The Biochemical Toxin Arsenal from Ant Venoms.

Ants (Formicidae) represent a taxonomically diverse group of hymenopterans with over 13,000 extant species, the majority of which inject or spray secretions from a venom gland. The evolutionary success of ants is mostly due to their unique eusociality that has permitted them to develop complex collaborative strategies, partly involving their venom secretions, to defend their nest against predators, microbial pathogens, ant competitors, and to hunt prey. Activities of ant venom include paralytic, cytolytic, haemolytic, allergenic, pro-inflammatory, insecticidal, antimicrobial, and pain-producin…

Environment: early ant plagues in the New World.

The identity and origin of the West Indian plague ants of the early sixteenth and late eighteenth centuries have long been a mystery. By reviewing historic accounts with an analysis of the present-day Caribbean ant fauna, I have narrowed the list of suspects to two species and their insect symbionts.

THE RETTENMEYER ARMY ANT GUEST COLLECTION: A MULTIFACETED RESOURCE FOR INVESTIGATING THE FUNDAMENTAL NATURE OF THE ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN ARMY ANTS AND THEIR "GUESTS".

Less well known in the parasitological community than in the entomological community are the wonderfully complex systems of army ants and the multitude of taxa that associate with them, collectively termed guests. Guests include vertebrates such as antbirds, but also a diversity of arthropods such as beetles, flies, wasps, millipedes, thysanurans, and collembolans. In addition, a wide variety of mites live on the bodies of army ants and appear to have become modified in form to conform with a particular site on their ant host. The nature of the relationships between army ants and many of their…

Effects of gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist (GnRH-ant) cessation on trigger day in a GnRH-ant protocol: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist (GnRH-ant) protocol is associated with few oocytes retrieved, few mature oocytes and poor endometrial receptivity. Omission of GnRH-ants on trigger day seems unlikely to induce preovulation and may improve outcomes in the GnRH-ant protocol. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the effects of GnRH-ant cessation on trigger day on in vitro fertilisation outcomes following the GnRH-ant protocol. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Ovid/MEDLINE, Wanfang, VIP, CNKI and ClinicalTrials.gov databases. The last search was conducted on 10 Decembe…

A comparison of insecticide susceptibility levels in 12 species of urban pest ants with special focus on the odorous house ant, Tapinoma sessile.

BACKGROUND: Many ant species are pests in urban, agricultural, and natural habitats around the world. The primary means of reducing or eliminating ant infestations utilizes chemical control, mainly applications of residual insecticides. Control failures with residual insecticides are common, driven in part by a lack of understanding of basic biological and life history characteristics, including interspecific variation in susceptibility to insecticides. The current study evaluated the susceptibility of 12 species of urban pest ants to three classes of insecticides. RESULTS: Results show signi…

Novel killer yeasts and toxins from the gardens of fungus-growing ants.

UNLABELLED: Killer toxins are proteinaceous antifungal molecules produced by yeasts, with activity against a wide range of human and plant pathogenic fungi. Fungus gardens of attine ants in Brazil were surveyed to determine the presence of killer toxin-producing yeasts and to define their antifungal activities and ecological importance. Our results indicate that 10 out of 59 yeast species isolated from fungal gardens are killer yeasts. Killer yeasts were less likely to inhibit the growth of yeasts isolated from the same environment but more effective at inhibiting yeasts isolated from other en…

Independent Evolution of Linear and Branched Cuticular Hydrocarbons in Ants: A Hypothesis.

The epicuticle of Cataglyphis niger is endowed with hydrocarbons comprising both linear and branched alkanes. For linear alkane, it is hypothesized that the primary driving force for their evolution was acquiring means for attaining cuticular impermeability that protects the ants from desiccation, and, secondarily, was co-opted as cues and signals. For example, being more abundant in foragers, they signal colony foraging intensity and, accordingly, adjust task allocation. Branched alkanes serve mostly in communication, but their evolution is less clear. Studies of the biosynthesis of both clas…

Multimodal signal detection in ants: Evidence for lateralization in antennal electrophysiological responses.

Social insects rely on multimodal communication systems to coordinate both individual and colony-level responses, yet the sensory foundations underlying the perception of combined signal components remain poorly understood. In ants, alarm communication often integrates chemical and vibroacoustic cues, but how these modalities are detected and processed by individual workers is still largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated the peripheral detection of multimodal alarm signals in Myrmica scabrinodis, examining how workers detect concurrent alarm pheromones and stridulations. Our electr…

Juvenile hormone as a key regulator for asymmetric caste differentiation in ants.

Caste differentiation involves many functional traits that diverge during larval growth and metamorphosis to produce adults irreversibly adapted to reproductive division of labor. Investigating developmental differentiation is important for general biological understanding and has increasingly been explored for social phenotypes that diverge in parallel from similar genotypes. Here, we use Monomorium pharaonis ants to investigate the extent to which canalized worker development can be shifted toward gyne (virgin-queen) phenotypes by juvenile hormone (JH) treatment. We show that excess JH can a…

Functional morphology and efficiency of the antenna cleaner in Camponotus rufifemur ants.

Contamination of body surfaces can negatively affect many physiological functions. Insects have evolved different adaptations for removing contamination, including surfaces that allow passive self-cleaning and structures for active cleaning. Here, we study the function of the antenna cleaner in Camponotus rufifemur ants, a clamp-like structure consisting of a notch on the basitarsus facing a spur on the tibia, both bearing cuticular 'combs' and 'brushes'. The ants clamp one antenna tightly between notch and spur, pull it through, and subsequently clean the antenna cleaner itself with the mouth…

Mandibular gland chemistry of grass-cutting ants: species, caste, and colony variation.

The compositions of the alarm pheromones of two species of grass-cutting ant, Atta bisphaerica and A. capiguara, were examined, and caste and colony variations quantified. The pheromones of A. bisphaerica and A. capiguara were remarkably similar and were composed of a complex mixture of volatiles in which 4-methyl-3-heptanone and 2-heptanone were the most abundant compounds. Small but consistent intraspecific differences were found between the worker castes and between individual colonies. The results support the view that alarm pheromones are rarely species specific. The possible importance o

Direct Evidence for Cannibalistic Necrophagy as a Way of Nitrogen Recycling in Ants.

Adequate nitrogen sources are indispensable for the development and reproduction of most animals. Some observations suggest that eusocial insects, such as termites or ants, can cover the protein requirements of their growing larvae by consuming the corpses of their own nestmates, a behavior known as cannibalistic necrophagy. While termites commonly utilize this food source, its occurrence in ants remains controversial and has so far been supported only by indirect observations (e.g., substantial weight loss of corpses or the presence of gnawed-out holes on the abdomen of the corpses). This beh…

Genomic signatures of adaptation in native lizards exposed to human-introduced fire ants.

Understanding the process of genetic adaptation in response to human-mediated ecological change will help elucidate the eco-evolutionary impacts of human activity. In the 1930s red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) were accidently introduced to the Southeastern USA, where today they are both venomous predators and toxic prey to native eastern fence lizards (Sceloporus undulatus). Here, we investigate potential lizard adaptation to invasive fire ants by generating whole-genome sequences from 420 lizards across three populations: one with long exposure to fire ants, and two unexposed popul…

Curcuma longa essential oils: toxicity and repellency against imported fire ants (Formicidae: Hymenoptera).

Curcuma longa L. (Zingiberales: Zingiberaceae) leaf and rhizome essential oils were evaluated for their toxicity and repellency against invasive fire ants: red imported fire ants (RIFA), Solenopsis invicta Buren, black imported fire ants (BIFA), Solenopsis richteri Forel, and a reproductively functional hybrid (HIFA). Ar-turmerone was the major constituent of leaf (42.4%) and rhizome (40.4%) essential oils. A range of concentrations starting from 156 µg/g until the failure of treatment were used. Removal of treated sand in digging bioassay was used as a criterion for repellency. Leaf essential…
