An exploration of associations between separation anxiety in childhood and complicated grief in later life.

Recent studies have suggested that the vulnerability to complicated grief (CG) may be rooted in insecure attachment styles developed in childhood. The aim of this study was to examine the etiologic relevance of childhood separation anxiety (CSA) to the onset of CG relative to major depressive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder in bereaved individuals. The Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV, Inventory of Complicated Grief-Revised, and CSA items from the Panic Agoraphobic Spectrum Questionnaire were administered to 283 recently bereaved community-

Course and short-term outcomes of separation anxiety disorder in a community sample of twins.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the course and short-term outcomes associated with separation anxiety disorder (SAD) in a community setting. METHOD: The subjects were 161 of 2,061 8- to 17-year-old twins with SAD from a community-based twin study. Subjects were born between 1974 and 1983. Subjects and parents were personally interviewed about the subject's current psychiatric history between 1990 and 1993. A follow-up interview was conducted, on average, 18 months later. Logistic regression was used to identify predictors and outcomes of persistent SAD. RESULTS: Of the 161 subjects with SAD at time 1,

The DSM-5 Dimensional Anxiety Scales in a Dutch non-clinical sample: psychometric properties including the adult separation anxiety disorder scale.

With DSM-5, the American Psychiatric Association encourages complementing categorical diagnoses with dimensional severity ratings. We therefore examined the psychometric properties of the DSM-5 Dimensional Anxiety Scales, a set of brief dimensional scales that are consistent in content and structure and assess DSM-5-based core features of anxiety disorders. Participants (285 males, 255 females) completed the DSM-5 Dimensional Anxiety Scales for social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobia, agoraphobia, and panic disorder that were included in previous studies on the s

Psychometric properties of the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and separation criterion between Spanish youths with and without subtypes of social anxiety.

In this study, we analyzed the reliability and validity of the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) and propose a separation criterion between youths with specific and generalized social anxiety and youths without social anxiety. A sample of 1012 Spanish youths attending school completed the SIAS, the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale, the Social Avoidance and Distress Scale, the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale, the Youth Self-Report for Ages 11-18 and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent. The factor analysis suggests the existence of three factors in the SIAS, the firs

Biased attention to threat in paediatric anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, specific phobia, separation anxiety disorder) as a function of 'distress' versus 'fear' diagnostic categorization.

BACKGROUND: Structural models of emotional disorders propose that anxiety disorders can be classified into fear and distress disorders. Sources of evidence for this distinction come from genetic, self-report and neurophysiological data from adults. The present study examined whether this distinction relates to cognitive processes, indexed by attention bias towards threat, which is thought to cause and maintain anxiety disorders. METHOD: Diagnostic and attention bias data were analysed from 435 children between 5 and 13 years of age; 158 had principal fear disorder (specific phobia, social pho

Traits of separation anxiety in childhood: a retrospective study of Samoan men, women, and fa'afafine.

Gender Identity Disorder in Childhood (GIDC) and Separation Anxiety Disorder have been found to be co-morbid for boys in Western populations. In a Samoan cultural context, fa'afafine are defined as androphilic males (i.e., biological males who are sexually attracted to and aroused by adult males) who are effeminate or transgendered and occupy an "alternative" gender role category, which is distinct from the gender normative categories of "man" and "woman." Because some Western clinicians would likely conclude that many of the fa'afafine had GIDC, we examined whether adult fa'afafine would also

Factors Affecting Separation Anxiety Disorder in Adolescent Earthquake Survivors: The Case of Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes (2023).

OBJECTIVE: The Kahramanmaras Earthquakes (2023) are the largest and most devastating earthquakes in the history of the Republic. The effects of these earthquakes are particularly deeply felt among younger generations and trigger various psychological factors. Therefore, the aim of this study is to measure the levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social phobia (SP), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and depression on separation anxiety disorder (SAD) among adolescent earthquake survivors affected by the Kahramanmaras Earthquakes (2023). METHODS: In the study, the data were obtain

Distinct ACC Neural Mechanisms Underlie Authentic and Transmitted Anxiety Induced by Maternal Separation in Mice.

It is known that humans and rodents are capable of transmitting stress to their naive partners via social interaction. However, a comprehensive understanding of transmitted stress, which may differ from authentic stress, thus revealing unique neural mechanisms of social interaction resulting from transmitted stress and the associated anxiety, is missing. We used, in the present study, maternal separation (MS) as a stress model to investigate whether MS causes abnormal behavior in adolescence. A key concern in the analysis of stress transmission is whether the littermates of MS mice who only wi

Systematic review and meta-analysis: effects of maternal separation on anxiety-like behavior in rodents.

The mechanisms by which childhood maltreatment increases anxiety is unclear, but a propensity for increased defensive behavior in rodent models of early life stress (ELS) suggests that work in rodents may clarify important mechanistic details about this association. A key challenge in studying the effects of ELS on defensive behavior in rodents is the plethora of inconsistent results. This is particularly prominent with the maternal separation (MS) literature, one of the most commonly used ELS models in rodents. To address this issue we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, examinin

A multivariate genetic analysis of specific phobia, separation anxiety and social phobia in early childhood.

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity amongst anxiety disorders is very common in children as in adults and leads to considerable distress and impairment, yet is poorly understood. Multivariate genetic analyses can shed light on the origins of this comorbidity by revealing whether genetic or environmental risks for one disorder also influence another. We examined the genetic and environmental influences on the comorbidity between three common childhood anxiety disorders: Specific Phobia, Separation Anxiety and Social Phobia. METHODS: Using a two-phase design 4,662 twin-pairs were screened in the first phas

Adults who feared school: is early separation anxiety specific to the pathogenesis of panic disorder?

Although juvenile separation anxiety disorder is maintained to be a predisposing factor to adult panic disorder in DSM-III-R, past research has failed to clarify (a) whether it is separation anxiety per se or school refusal that is the pathogenic risk factor and (b) whether affected youngsters are specifically at risk of developing panic disorder rather than symptoms of general anxiety or phobias in later life. The present study of 74 adults who responded to media publicity found that a measure of early separation anxiety but not a history of school refusal was associated with risk of adult pa

Separation anxiety disorder in pregnancy: The relationship between attachment styles, childhood trauma, and prenatal attachment.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Separation anxiety, rooted in attachment theory, involves distress when separated from attachment figures. This study aims to investigate the prevalence Adult Separation Anxiety Disorder (ASAD) among pregnant women and to explore its associations with attachment styles, childhood trauma, and prenatal attachment. METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 106 third-trimester pregnant women, who were classified into ASAD (n = 51) and non-ASAD (n = 55) groups based on the Structured Clinical Interview for Separation Anxiety Symptoms (SAD-SCI). Participants were also assessed

Caregiver-mediated therapy for an adult with visual and intellectual impairment suffering from separation anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Separation anxiety among intellectually disabled (ID) persons with comorbid visual impairment could be rooted in a weak sense of person permanence. Technology-assisted Therapy for Separation Anxiety (TTSA) was used to address this problem. AIMS: The primary aim was to determine whether technology alone or including caregivers was the best option, and whether TTSA decreased separation anxiety and challenging behaviour. Also, how the caregivers and the client experienced TTSA. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: A pre-experimental, quantitative approach (AB1C1B2C2D) was used for this single-su

Are you gonna leave me? Separation anxiety is associated with increased amygdala responsiveness and volume.

The core feature of separation anxiety is excessive distress when faced with actual or perceived separation from people to whom the individual has a strong emotional attachment. So far little is known about the neurobiological underpinnings of separation anxiety. Therefore, we investigated functional (amygdala responsiveness and functional connectivity during threat-related emotion processing) and structural (grey matter volume) imaging markers associated with separation anxiety as measured with the Relationship Scale Questionnaire in a large sample of healthy adults from the Münster Neuroimag

Unstable maternal environment, separation anxiety, and heightened CO2 sensitivity induced by gene-by-environment interplay.

BACKGROUND: In man, many different events implying childhood separation from caregivers/unstable parental environment are associated with heightened risk for panic disorder in adulthood. Twin data show that the occurrence of such events in childhood contributes to explaining the covariation between separation anxiety disorder, panic, and the related psychobiological trait of CO(2) hypersensitivity. We hypothesized that early interference with infant-mother interaction could moderate the interspecific trait of response to CO(2) through genetic control of sensitivity to the environment. METHODO

Platelet 18 kDa Translocator Protein density is reduced in depressed patients with adult separation anxiety.

RATIONALE: Recent studies indicate that Adult Separation Anxiety Disorder (ASAD) may represent a discrete diagnostic entity worthy of attention. Adults with separation anxiety report extreme anxiety and fear about separations from major attachment figures (partner, children or parents). These symptoms affect individual's behavior, lead to severe impairment in social relationships and are not better accounted for by the presence of agoraphobia. In a previous study we found platelet expression reduction of the 18 kDa Translocator Protein (TSPO) (the new nomenclature for the peripheral-type benzo

Body dissatisfaction in women with eating disorders: relationship to early separation anxiety and insecure attachment.

OBJECTIVE: It has been suggested that an insecure style of attachment may be one of the factors implicated in the etiology of body dissatisfaction, which, in turn, is a risk factor for eating disorders. The present study analyzed the association among early separation anxiety, insecure attachment, and body dissatisfaction in a clinical sample of 96 women with anorexia nervosa (n = 31) or bulimia nervosa (n = 65). METHODS: Body dissatisfaction was measured using the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), early separation anxiety was measured using the Separation Anxiety Symptom Inventory (SASI), and

Separation anxiety as a mediator between acute morphine administration and PTSD symptoms in injured children.

Emerging evidence suggests that individuals who receive morphine while hospitalized demonstrate a decrease in symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the mechanisms of effects are not yet well understood. The goal of the current study was to examine three possible mediators for this effect. Sixty-one injured (burns, motor vehicle accidents, falls, and assaults) children were assessed during hospitalization and again 3 months post discharge. Assessment included acute and follow-up child report measures of pain, PTSD, and anxiety symptoms, as well as a medical record review fo

Neuro Emotional Technique as a Treatment for Separation Anxiety Related to Prenatal Stress: A Case Report.

Prenatal maternal stress (PNMS) is increasingly recognised as a contributor to early-life emotional dysregulation through mechanisms such as prenatal stress programming (PNSP). Separation anxiety disorder (SAD) is the most common childhood anxiety condition, with limited treatment options for cases linked to prenatal factors. Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) is a mind-body intervention that targets unresolved emotional stress patterns through physiological and semantic integration. While used clinically in stress-related disorders, NET's application in treating anxiety rooted in prenatal stress
