This study examines the validity of labeled parameters of aphakia-correcting soft contact lenses. The Nikon Projection Lensometer (NPL) and the Hydro-Vue Soft Lens Analyzer (HSLA) were used by two independent inspectors to measure 51 aphakia-correcting lenses. The contact lens power, diameter, and base curve were measured by each of the inspectors and compared to the labeled parameters. All parameter relations that were analyzed revealed that measurements made by the inspectors were not statistically different (p greater than 0.05) from each other and that their combined measurements were not

Because spectacle lenses are fixed in position relative to the eyes, the visual axes during convergence pass nasal to the optical centers, and create a prismatic effect. The eye rotates less than 25 degrees before the head is turned; therefore for central vision, only an area of the lens about 13 mm wide is used. A reading addition of +6.00 D is probably the maximal power bifocal addition that can be prescribed for comfortable binocular vision in a high plus correction. The distance correction produces a base-out effect of at least 4 delta for each eye at the reading distance, even though the

A cataract operation in a young Siberian tiger is reported. This 5-month-old tiger, presenting with blindness, showed bilateral residual pupillary membranes and anterior polar cataracts combined with nuclear cataracts. After unilateral intracapsular extraction of the lens, the tiger adapted well to the improvement in sight and behaved almost like an animal with normal vision. The animal died 3 months post-operatively from unknown cause. Histological examination of the aphakic eye showed, at the site of operation on the cornea, an intact epithelium with discrete infiltration of the stroma toget

The cause of aphakic glaucoma should always be determined because treatment must be directed towards the aetiological mechanism. We have defined early aphakic glaucoma as that occurring within the first 6 postoperative weeks and late aphakic glaucoma as occurring at any later time. Of the various causes of glaucoma in each category, among the most serious and challenging to treat are pupillary block and angle closure. These emanate from postoperative shallow or empty anterior chambers which are associated with wound fistula, choroidal detachment, or a combination of both. Other mechanisms prod

PURPOSE: To assess different approaches in the management of aphakia in adults in Indian ophthalmologists via an online survey.
METHODS: A survey-monkey based online questionnaire was fielded to Indian ophthalmologists in accordance with the CHERRIES guidelines. We recorded participants' demographics, practice settings, and preferred surgical options including the type of intraocular lens (IOL) preferred when encountering a case of aphakia in adults with and without adequate capsular support. Differences between anterior segment (AS) surgeons and vitreoretinal (VR) surgeons as well as differe

An innovative intraocular lens (IOL), the CM-T Flex IOL, was used to correct surgical aphakia without disturbing a functioning filtering bleb. A 66-year-old man presented with aphakia in the left eye. Cataract extraction and trabeculectomy was performed in the left eye 2 years previously elsewhere. Corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) in the left eye was 6/18, and, on examination, it showed a filtering bleb that encroached on the limbus and superior cornea. The cornea was clear with a deep anterior chamber. Retinal examination was normal. Disc cupping was noted with a cup-to-disc ratio of 0

We prospectively studied for three years the optical correction by contact lenses of 83 aphakic infants (141 eyes) who generally also had systemic and other ocular anomalies: 85% of the patients tolerated the lens wear for the whole study period. Complications occurred in 46 eyes and led to cessation of lens wear in two cases. Ten patients abandoned the lenses for other reasons. Thirty-four eyes needed subsequent intraocular surgery, mostly minor, and nine patients had strabismus surgery. Contact lenses are a versatile, safe, successful, and cost effective treatment for aphakia in infancy agai

The paper presents a short history of the cataract intervention, starting from the lens luxation in vitreum and going to the implant of artificial lens. From the three classes of artificial lenses, up-to-date options are the posterior chamber artificial lenses. Today, in 80% of the cases, artificial lens implant is done, 80% of the implanted lenses being posterior chamber lenses. The paper also exposes various operatorial techniques, post-operatorial evolution and the results obtained.

Instruments for the production of non-freeze epikeratophakia lenticules allow the surgeon to produce his own live lenticules from -35 to +25 dptr using the Barraquer-Krumeich-Swinger set. 29 myopic cases differ to the refractive target plus/minus 15% and reach contact lens visual acuity values after 2-5 weeks. 58 consecutive cases off epikeratophakia correction of aphakia result between 5 and 15% of the target. Optimal visual acuity is generally reached between 4 and 8 weeks postop. In 6 cases the epikeratophakia lenticule had to be removed and replaced.
