Apologising in Saudi Arabic: A sociopragmatic analysis.

This study describes how Saudi Arabic speakers apologise across socially varied situations. A written discourse completion task was completed by 102 male Saudi undergraduates. It yielded 811 responses to eight scenarios differing in social distance, power relationship, and severity of offence. Responses were coded for the five apology strategies of the CCSARP tradition. Because the scenarios vary in several respects at once, the study compares apology behaviour across situation types rather than isolating single variables. Saudi apologies emerged as elaborate, multi-move acts anchored in the e

Plague outbreak in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.

Plague is circulating regularly in localised areas worldwide, causing sporadic cases outside Africa and remains endemic or causes limited outbreaks in some African countries. Furthermore, some notable outbreaks have been reported in Asia in the last 20 years. A limited outbreak with five cases has recently been notified by the health authorities of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.

Hyperimmunoglobulinemia D syndrome in an Arab child.

Hyperimmunoglobulinemia D syndrome (HIDS) is newly recognized and resembles familial Mediterranean fever (FMF). It is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. Mutation of the gene coding for mevalonate kinase is responsible for the disease. The gene is located at chromosome 12q24. The patients initially described were of Dutch ancestry. Other cases from Turkey and Armenia were reported. The case we present is the first from Arab countries to be registered in the International HIDS Registry and to our knowledge the first to be reported.

Kenny-Caffey syndrome: an Arab variant?

We describe 2 unrelated Bedouin girls who met the criteria for the diagnosis of Kenny-Caffey syndrome. The girls had some unusual features--microcephaly and psychomotor retardation--that distinguish the Kenny-Caffey syndrome profile in Arab children from the classical Kenny-Caffey syndrome phenotype characterized by macrocephaly and normal intelligence. The 2 girls did not harbor the 22q11 microdeletion (the hallmark of the DiGeorge cluster of diseases) that we previously reported in another Bedouin family with the Kenny-Caffey syndrome (Sabry et al. J Med Genet 1998: 35(1): 31-36). This indic

The erythrocyte effects of haemoglobin O(ARAB).

To test the hypothesis that HbOARAB induces an increase in red cell mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), we studied members of four Tunisian families who were either homo- or heterozygous for HbOARAB or were double heterozygotes for HbS and HbOARAB. The alpha-gene status was also tested. The findings included: (1) Distinctive variation in red cell density (MCHC) as determined by separation of red cells on isopycnic gradients: (a) All red cells from patients homozygous for HbOARAB were denser than normal red cells, as is observed for homozygous HbC patients. (b) In patients hetero

Juvenile Behçet's disease in Arab children.

Behçet's disease is a chronic, relapsing, multisystem disease characterized by the clinical triad of genital ulcers, oral ulcers and ocular involvement. Twelve Saudi children are presented, all of whom satisfied the international criteria for the classification of Behçet's disease and whose initial manifestations appeared at or before the age of 16 years. The male-to-female ratio was 1.4:1. The mean age at onset was 11.5 years (range 7-16 years) and the mean duration of disease was 6.5 years (range 3-13 years). Oral ulcers were present in all patients (100%), genital ulcers in 11 patients (91%

Selective impairment in manipulating Arabic numerals.

This paper describes an acalculic patient (B.A.L.) with an unusual selective deficit in manipulating arabic numerals. The patient was unimpaired in reading aloud letters, words and written number names but unable to read aloud single arabic numerals. Furthermore, his ability to produce the next number in the sequence and his ability to produce answers to simple addition and subtraction was relatively spared when the stimuli were presented as number names but impaired when the stimuli were presented as arabic numerals. Using magnitude comparison tasks it was demonstrated that his knowledge of c

Autosomal recessive osteopetrosis in Arab children.

Nineteen Arab children including six boys and 13 girls in ten sibships were diagnosed as having osteopetrosis over a 5-year period in various hospitals in Kuwait. Eighteen patients had an isolated autosomal recessive form and one had autosomal recessive osteopetrosis associated with renal tubular acidosis. The mean age of diagnosis was 24 months. Parental consanguinity was high amongst them (68%). Anaemia, hepatosplenomegaly, failure to thrive, recurrent infections and neurological manifestations were common. Associated congenital abnormalities were found in 26%. Deafness, hydrocephalus and de

Helicobacter pylori and dyspepsia in an Arab population.

To determine the incidence and significance of the detection of Helicobacter pylori in an Arab population, 116 patients with dyspepsia were studied. 89 percent of these patients had H. pylori detected by culture or/and histological definition of Campylobacter-like organisms. By the modified rapid urease test (RUT) 80% of the patients had H. pylori (sensitivity of 91%, specificity of 75%). Irrespective of the endoscopic diagnosis, the presence of H. pylori was associated with histologic evidence of gastritis. A heavy growth of H. pylori on culture was associated with active gastritis. There was

Barriers to liver transplantation in the Arab world.

Liver transplantation is a vital intervention for patients with end-stage liver disease; however, the Arab world faces significant barriers that hinder access to this life-saving procedure in terms of both practice and research. This narrative review explores the multifaceted challenges, including financial constraints, limited healthcare infrastructure, cultural factors, and the prevalence of infectious diseases. In the Arab countries, both culture and religion were found to play major roles in the acceptability of liver transplantation. High rates of misconceptions and financial strain on pa

The Reading of Deaf Arabic Children in Israel.

Studies on the reading acquisition of deaf children investigate the similarities and differences in the reading process between these readers and typical hearing readers. There is no consensus on the nature of the reading process among deaf readers, whether they use the same reading processing strategies as typical readers or depend on other strategies to close the gap. The present study aimed to test the types of strategies used to process written words by deaf Arabic readers with prelingual deafness, compared to their hearing peers, and to test the effectiveness of deaf readers' use of these

Usher syndrome in the United Arab Emirates.

PURPOSE: Usher syndrome, a common form of syndromic inherited retinal dystrophy in the Arabian Gulf, has not been molecularly defined in the United Arab Emirates. The current study addresses this gap in knowledge. METHODS: A retrospective case series of Emirati patients referred to the Ocular Genetics Clinic of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi who (1) were clinically diagnosed with Usher syndrome and underwent genetic testing (whole exome sequencing, 2019 to 2023, inclusive) and (2) were identified to have biallelic pathogenic variants in Usher syndrome genes during the same time period. RESULTS:

Electronegative Electroretinograms in the United Arab Emirates.

PURPOSE: An electronegative electroretinogram (ERG), defined as having a b:a wave ratio ≤1 in the scotopic flash ERG response, indicates relative inner retinal dysfunction. Causes vary depending upon the study population. In the Arabian Gulf, where inherited retinal disease is relatively prevalent, common diagnoses associated with electronegative ERGs have not been described. In this study, we report the frequency and causes of electronegative ERGs in a cohort of Emirati patients with inherited retinal disease. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of all full-field ERGs done for Emir

Prevalence of glaucoma in the Israeli Arab population.

We describe the prevalence and treatment of glaucoma in a Muslim Arab population in Israel. Based on the medical records of 15 122 persons, the overall prevalence of glaucoma was 3.9%. Prevalence rates of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) were 3.0% and 0.42%, respectively. Prevalence rates of women were 135% that of men considering all types of glaucoma, 143% for POAG, and 96% for PACG. Prostaglandin analogs and beta blockers, alone or combined with carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, were the preferred medications. Of 68 patients who underwent trabeculect

Siamese twins in the United Arab Emirates.

In the years 1985-1992, ten pairs of conjoined twins were born in the United Arab Emirates (UAE): one dicephalus, two teratopagi, and seven thoracoomphalopagi, one of which was still-born and three who were cared for in other hospitals. The first pair of thoraco-omphalopagus twins died of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia 6 months after successful separation. The management of the third set of twins gave rise to moral and ethical problems often encountered in such situations, while one of the teratopagi was a unique case of a parasite projecting from the mouth of the normal twin.
