Social anxiety among East Asians in North America: East Asian socialization or the challenge of acculturation?

North American research has consistently reported higher social anxiety among people of Asian heritage compared to people of Western heritage. The present study used a cross-national sample of 692 university students to explore explanatory hypotheses using planned contrasts of group differences in social anxiety and related variables. The East Asian socialization hypothesis proposed social anxiety would show a linear relation corresponding to the degree of exposure to East Asian cultural norms. This hypothesis was not supported. The cultural discrepancy hypothesis examined whether bicultural E

Insights into the pan-microbiome: skin microbial communities of Chinese individuals differ from other racial groups.

Many studies have characterized microbiomes of western individuals. However, studies involving non-westerners are scarce. This study characterizes the skin microbiomes of Chinese individuals. Skin-associated genera, including Propionibacterium, Corynebacterium, Staphylococcus, and Enhydrobacter were prevalent. Extensive inter-individual microbiome variations were detected, with core genera present in all individuals constituting a minority of genera detected. Species-level analyses presented dominance of potential opportunistic pathogens in respective genera. Host properties including age, gen

Genetic ancestry of the Mulam ethnic group: admixture from ancient Yellow River, southern native, and Austronesian populations.

The Mulam people, an ethnic minority group native to southern China, primarily inhabit the Guangxi region. Systematic whole-genome studies on the Mulam population remain limited. In this study, we analyzed genome-wide genotyping data comprising over 700,000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) derived from 107 saliva samples of Mulam individuals in Guangxi, to investigate their genetic origins and relationships with other southern East Asian populations. Based on ancestry inference and population genetic analysis, we identified three major ancestral components in the Mulam genome: ancient Ye

Use of fixed-ratio combination of basal insulin and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) in Asians with type 2 diabetes.

People with type 2 diabetes in Asia have heterogeneous phenotypes but share common features of young age-at-diagnosis, low body mass index, low pancreatic beta-cell capacity, rapid decline in insulin secretion as well as visceral and ectopic fat excess. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of mortality in people with diabetes. In clinical trial settings, despite receiving protocol-driven care, Asians had higher risk of chronic kidney disease than non-Asians. Aging and improved survival in people with diabetes continue to drive the epidemic of diabetes. People with old age, long disea

Unpacking the root causes of gambling in the Asian community: Contesting the myth of the Asian gambling culture.

INTRODUCTION: Problem gambling is a public health issue both in the United States and internationally and can lead to mental health and socioeconomic concerns for individuals, families, and communities. Large epidemiological studies on problem gambling have neglected to include working-class, immigrant Asian Americans, who are at higher risk for problem gambling. The lack of data on Asian American gambling may explain a subsequent lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate treatment and prevention services. Additionally, the invisibility of Asian American data in published literature ha

Cosmetic approach to the Asian population.

The types of cosmetic procedures favored by Asian individuals are unique and tailored to their anatomical differences. Thus, a customized approach is taken for different cosmetic procedures, ranging from neurotoxins and fillers to nonablative fractional resurfacing. The purpose of this review article is to identify the different types of cosmetic procedures commonly sought by Asian individuals and to understand how these different procedures are customized toward their aesthetic preferences. This review integrates the findings from multiple clinical trials available on PubMed. The procedures l

Review: keratoconus in Asia.

Keratoconus is an ectatic corneal disorder for which exciting therapeutic and diagnostic technologies are emerging. However, its pathogenesis is still heterogeneous and elusive. We researched overlooked Asian keratoconus data by literature review of databases (PubMed, MEDLINE, Ovid, Google Scholar, Cornea, and Cochrane) using key words "keratoconus, Asia, epidemiology, treatment, risk factors, genes" and names of Asian countries. Articles and their references were analyzed. Studies showed that keratoconus may be more prevalent, have earlier onset, and have greater disease progression in certai

Microanatomical and neuroendoscopic studies of the internal auditory meatus and its surrounding structures.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the morphology of the internal auditory meatus in relation with its surrounding structures in Chinese people, for the purpose of providing microanatomical reference for surgeries adopting retro-sigmoid approach. METHODS: The retro-sigmoid surgical approach was simulated on 5 fresh specimens of human head, in which the internal auditory meatus and its surrounding structures were observed through a neuroendoscope and a surgical microscope. The distances from the posterior inferior edge of the internal auditory meatus to the central point of the posterior edge of the sigmoi

Racial and Ethnic Differences in the Relationship of SARS-CoV-2 Infection and the COVID-19 Pandemic Period With Perinatal Health in California.

BACKGROUND: In this article, we test the hypothesis that SARS-CoV-2 infection and the COVID-19 pandemic period had stronger adverse implications for perinatal outcomes among marginalized racial and ethnic groups in California. METHODS: We used California birth certificates and hospital data from 2019 to 2021 to estimate marginal risk differences for SARS-CoV-2 infection and the COVID-19 pandemic period in relation to perinatal outcomes for Asian, Black, Hispanic, Multiracial, and White pregnant people using targeted maximum likelihood estimation. RESULTS: Among 849,401 deliveries, there were

Should cross-sex hormone treatment of transsexual subjects vary with ethnic group?

Guidelines for cross-sex hormone treatment of transsexual people have been developed, but no attention has been paid to the specifics of ethnic groups. South East (SE) Asian male-to-female (MtoF) transsexual people may be able to transition to the female sex with lower doses of estrogens/progestins than Caucasians thus reducing health risks. Female-to-male (FtoM) may virilize less profoundly with standard doses of androgens, but this is probably sufficient to pass acceptably as men in view of the less pronounced sex differences in physique in Asians compared with Caucasians. It is timely that
