Research suggests exercise may reduce eosinophilic airway inflammation in adults with asthma. The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) quantifies the inflammatory potential of the diet and has been associated with asthma outcomes. This study aimed to determine whether the DII of a meal consumed either before or after exercise influences exercise-induced changes in airway inflammation. A total of 56 adults with asthma were randomised to (1) 30-45 min moderate-vigorous exercise, or (2) a control group. Participants consumed self-selected meals, two hours pre- and two hours post-intervention. Energy

OBJECTIVES: Exercise induced bronchospasm (EIB) represents a common feature of childhood asthma which is most commonly revealed during free running. On the other hand aerobic exercise shows significant beneficial effects in asthmatics especially on the reduction of the level of systemic inflammation and is recommended as part of its treatment. The aim of this study was to test how mandatory mouth breathing influences the exercise induced level of decrease in lung function according to the level of severity of allergic rhinitis (AR).
METHODS: Free 6-minute running test preceded and followed by

A 47 years-old woman suffering from baker's asthma for several years developed anaphylaxis when she was walking hard after taking wheat. On the provocation test, neither wheat alone nor exercise alone induced any symptoms. The combination of exercise, wheat and aspirin induced urticaria and marked elevation of blood gliadin levels. According to the high titer of omega-5 gliadin specific IgE in her serum and the result of challenge test, we diagnosed wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA). By means of western blotting of soluble and insoluble wheat proteins, we detected several ba

The relationship of airway cooling during exercise to changes in airway caliber, plasma histamine levels, and circulating basophils was investigated in eight allergic asthmatic and eight normal subjects. In asthma matched RHE during exercise and ICH produced almost identical bronchoconstriction with maximum falls in SGaw of 61.0 +/- 4.5% and 57.9 +/- 5.2%, respectively. A similar RHE in normal subjects was associated with a 7.9 +/- 3.3% fall in SGaw. The resting plasma-histamine levels were higher in the asthmatic (0.52 +/- 0.06 ng/ml) than in the normal (0.31 +/- 0.07 ng/ml, p less than 0.05)

A number of drugs are known to inhibit exercise-induced asthma (EIA), but the results in some cases have been difficult to interpret due to the techniques employed. A comparative study was carried out in a group of children to investigate the effects of salbutamol, choline theophyllinate, cromolyn sodium, atropine, and placebo. The exercise test took the form of six minutes of standardized treadmill running. All the drugs, but not the placebo, were able to inhibit EIA ti a significant degree, the effect being most marked with salbutamol. Cromolyn sodium caused no bronchodilatation at rest, whi

Asthma is characterized by reversible airway narrowing, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and other symptoms driven by chronic inflammatory processes, commonly triggered by allergens. In 90% of asthmatics, most of these symptoms can also be triggered by intense physical activities and severely exacerbated by environmental factors. This condition is known as exercise-induced asthma (EIA). Current theories explaining EIA pathogenesis involve osmotic and/or thermal alterations in the airways caused by changes in respiratory airflow during exercise. These changes, along with existing airway

INTRODUCTION: Exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) and exercise-induced asthma can cause troublesome respiratory symptoms that can be difficult to distinguish between. Further, there is now a growing appreciation that the two conditions may coexist, complicating the interpretation of symptoms. The primary aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of EILO in patients with asthma. Secondary aims include evaluation of EILO treatment effects and investigation of comorbid conditions other than EILO in patients with asthma.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study will be conducted at Hauk

PURPOSE: Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) affects approximately 50% of young asthma patients, impairing their participation in sports and physical activities. Eucapnic voluntary hyperpnea (EVH) is an approved surrogate challenge to exercise for objective EIB diagnosis, but the required minimum target hyperventilation rates remain unexplored in this population. This study aimed to evaluate the association between the achieved ventilation rates (VRs) during a challenge and EIB-compatible response (EIB-cr) in young asthma patients.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 72 asthma

We review some of the evidence that supports the existence of psychosomatic triggers to bronchospasm in asthmatics, and hypothesize that it may also be possible to consciously reverse bronchospasm using trachea-noise biofeedback. We precipitated significant levels of bronchospasm in 16 asthmatics using exercise or eucapnic-hyperventilation challenges on five occasions, and administered four different treatments and a no-treatment control. The treatments were trachea-noise biofeedback (TNBF), wrong-information TNBF, an inhaled adrenergic bronchodilator, and a placebo inhaler, all given double b

BACKGROUND: Exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) is frequent among asthmatic children. However, opinions differ on the relation between EIB and rhinitis in the absence of asthma.
OBJECTIVES: We assessed the relationship between EIB and various phenotypes of rhinitis according to asthmatic status at the general population level in the Six Cities Study.
METHODS: Of 7781 schoolchildren with a mean age of 10 years underwent an EIB test and skin prick test to assess allergic sensitization. Their parents completed a standardized questionnaire recording asthma-like symptoms and past-year rhinoconjun

Exercise-induced respiratory symptoms describe acute airway narrowing that occurs as a result of exercise. It includes exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) and exercise-induced asthma (EIA) issues. To provide clinicians with practical guidelines, a multidisciplinary panel of stakeholders was convened to review the pathogenesis of EIB/EIA and to develop evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment. Recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of EIB were developed. High-intensity exercise in polluted environment (cold air, humidity, contamination, allergens) may increase t

Exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) and asthma in barrel racing horses is a common disease across the United States. Limited information is available on non-infectious respiratory diseases in this population, the interaction between these two diseases, and the occurrence of both EIPH and asthma in the horse. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid cytological results of barrel racing horses with EIPH, asthma, or both. A retrospective study was conducted using the medical records of horses that presented with cough and decreased athletic perform

Physical exercise is not hazardous to asthmatics. Some asthmatics may benefit from physical training, and almost all asthmatics can perform any kind of physical exercise. Free running was earlier thought to induce more asthma than swimming, for example; however, when ventilation is identical during running and swimming, the exercise-induced asthma will also be the same. Hyperventilation alone is as good as physical exercise to induce exercise-induced asthma. If the physical exercise provokes an asthmatic attack, this is most often easily reversed by inhaled beta 2-agonists. Pretreatment of exe

Exercise-induced dyspnea in children and adolescents can occur for many reasons. Although asthma is the common cause, failure to prevent exercise-induced asthma by pretreatment with a bronchodilator, such as albuterol, indicates that other etiologies should be considered. Other causes of exercise-induced dyspnea include exercise-induced vocal cord dysfunction, exercise-induced laryngomalacia, exercise-induced hyperventilation, chest wall restrictive abnormalities, cardiac causes, and normal physiologic limitation. When exercise-induced dyspnea is not from asthma, cardiopulmonary exercise testi

Although asthma is the most common cause of cough, wheeze, and dyspnea in children and adults, asthma is often attributed inappropriately to symptoms from other causes. Cough that is misdiagnosed as asthma can occur with pertussis, cystic fibrosis, primary ciliary dyskinesia, airway abnormalities such as tracheomalacia and bronchomalacia, chronic purulent or suppurative bronchitis in young children, and habit-cough syndrome. The respiratory sounds that occur with the upper airway obstruction caused by the various manifestations of the vocal cord dysfunction syndrome or the less common exercise

There are two apparently conflicting theories on the pathogenesis of exercise-induced asthma. One view is that exercise-induced asthma is directly related to respiratory heat exchange and that mast cells are not involved. The other theory explains exercise-induced asthma on the basis of a temperature-independent release of mast-cell mediators. A theory is put forward here that airway cooling in asthmatic subjects during exercise leads directly to mast-cell degranulation and that this explains the association between exercise, respiratory heat exchange, and mediator release.

Rationale: Exercise is associated with improvements in asthma; however, the mechanisms responsible are not clear. Exercise induces changes in systemic inflammation, and it is possible that these inflammatory effects extend to the airways of people with asthma. Studies in healthy adults suggest inflammatory responses are dependent on exercise intensity: Although acute moderate exercise is antiinflammatory, acute vigorous exercise appears to be neutral or proinflammatory. The effect of exercise intensity on inflammation has not been investigated in people with asthma. Objectives: To compare acut
