Tularemia is increasing in Austria. We report Francisella tularensis subspecies holarctica isolated from 3 patients who had been bitten by arthropods. Next-generation sequencing showed substantial isolate similarity. Clinicians should consider bloodstream F. tularensis infections for patients with signs/symptoms of ulceroglandular tularemia, and surveillance of potential vectors should be intensified.

A large majority of Austrian citizens are aware of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), consequently reflected by a high vaccination rate of 85%. Between 1969 and 1996, transmissible spongiform encephalopathy was definitely diagnosed by autopsy and/or biopsy in 98 Austrian patients. The yearly incidence increased significantly in past years (1996: 1.41 cases per million inhabitants). In Austria 85 patients (1.10/100,000) were hospitalized with a tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in 1990, 77 patients (0.98/100,000) in 1991. A relatively low incidence is seen in the younger age groups. The regional distribution follows the distribution of infested areas, with the highest rates in the two provinces Kärnten and Steiermark provinces.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Non-polyglutamine CACNA1A variants underlie an extremely variable phenotypic spectrum encompassing developmental delay, hemiplegic migraine, epilepsy, psychiatric symptoms, episodic and chronic cerebellar signs. We report on a patient in Austria with scalp eschar and neck lymphadenopathy. Rickettsial etiology was excluded by culture, PCR, and serologic tests. Borrelia afzelii was identified from the eschar swab by PCR. Lyme borreliosis can mimic rickettsiosis; appropriate tests should be included in the diagnostic workup of patients with eschars.

In this study, we performed a survey of infantile and late-onset Pompe disease (IOPD and LOPD) in Austria. Paediatric and neuromuscular centres were contacted to provide a set of anonymized clinical and genetic data of patients with IOPD and LOPD.
