BACKGROUND: Pharmacologic testing by indirect acting sympathomimetics like hydroxyamphetamine may determine the site of the lesion in Horner's syndrome. Pholedrine is chemically similar to hydroxyamphetamine. Therefore we examined if it shows the same effects in normal subjects and in patients with Horner's syndrome.
METHODS: Pupil diameter was measured by means of standardized photography before and after single and with different intervals repeated administration of pholedrine eye drops in normal subjects. In 18 patients with Horner's syndrome and known hydroxyamphetamine test results, a ph

1. Experiments were undertaken to examine the mechanisms involved in the reorganization of sympathetic efferent pathways to the urinary bladder of the cat following chronic unilateral, parasympathetic preganglionic denervation of the bladder. 2. Electrical stimulation (10-30 Hz) of the hypogastric nerve in cats with an intact bladder innervation or on the normally innervated side of the bladder in unilaterally denervated preparations elicited low-amplitude (10-25 cmH2O) transient (10-30 s) bladder contractions and non-synaptic axonal volleys on bladder postganglionic nerves. However, after chr

1 In anaesthetized rats electrical stimulation of the intact cervical sympathetic nerve produced frequency-dependent lower eyelid contractions and tachycardia. 2 The tachycardia was caused by excitation of efferent fibres since it was equally evident in the pithed rat preparation, and the right nerve was more effective than the left. By contrast, no differences were seen between the responses to right and left vagal stimulation in either rats or rabbits. 3 Guanethidine inhibited both cardiac and eyelid responses, propranolol only the former and phentolamine only the latter, therby revealing th

Previous work has suggested that cerebellum may control the size of the pupil and transmission in the pathway mediating the pupillary light reflex. In this work we found that electrical stimulation of the cerebellar nuclei (nucleus fastigius and nucleus interpositus bilaterally) evoked a discharge in the short ciliary nerves which innervate the intraocular muscles. The latency was 5.7 msec, which is short enough for a direct excitatory connexion from cerebellar efferents onto the preganglionic neurones in the Edinger-Westphal nucleus. These neurones are controlling the ciliary muscle of the le

Sympathetic efferents regulate the “fight-or-flight” response and sympathetic and vagal fibers have been suggested to retrogradely and centrally spread pathogens associated with Parkinson’s disease. To examine the arrangement of the vagal and sympathetic motor fibers in the celiac ganglion (CG), gastrointestinal tract, and along the superior mesenteric artery and its sub-branches, we double-labeled the vagal efferents by injecting Dextran-Texas Red into the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus and the sympathetic postganglionics with tyrosine hydroxylase immunohistochemistry in male Sprague-Dawle

Previous reports have suggested that a peripheral pressure-modulated reflex operates at the level of the superior cervical ganglion to alter evoked activity in the postganglionic nerves of the ganglion in both the cat and rabbit. In the present study we have examined if spontaneous activity of the external and internal carotid nerves of the rabbit superior cervical ganglion can be modulated during changes of the carotid bifurcation pressure (CBP), independent of central nervous system (CNS) integration. For external carotid nerve recordings increases in CBP resulted in a reduction in spontaneo

Two sisters whose parents shared a grandfather had cold-induced sweating. Since childhood they had sweated profusely from the back and chest when exposed to environmental temperatures of 18 degrees to 7 degrees C. They had additional abnormalities--e.g., high palate and inability fully to extend the elbows--which neither their parents nor their sibs shared. The cold-induced sweating, which could not be stopped by a beta-adrenergic blocking agent, was abolished by postganglionic blockade with atropine sulphate. This indicates the possibility of a peripheral mechanism.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether autonomic dysfunction in neurosarcoidosis is associated with anti-ganglionic acetylcholine receptor (gAChR) antibodies, which are detected in autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy.
METHODS: We retrospectively extracted cases of sarcoidosis from 1787 serum samples of 1,381 patients between 2012 and 2018. Anti-gAChR antibodies against the α3 and β4 subunit were measured by luciferase immunoprecipitation to confirm the clinical features of each case. We summarized literature reviews of neurosarcoidosis with severe dysautonomia to identify relevant clinical features

The best-known peripheral neuropathies are those affecting the large, myelinated motor and sensory fibers. These have well-established immunological causes and therapies. Far less is known about the somatic and autonomic "small fibers"; the unmyelinated C-fibers, thinly myelinated A-deltas, and postganglionic sympathetics. The small fibers sense pain and itch, innervate internal organs and tissues, and modulate the inflammatory and immune responses. Symptoms of small-fiber neuropathy include chronic pain and itch, sensory impairment, edema, and skin color, temperature, and sweating changes. Sm

This study was carried out to demonstrate the neuroanatomical bases of pain in non inflamed appendices. Fifty human cecal appendices were examined by means of an immunohistochemical method utilizing antibodies for S100 protein, Neuron Specific Enolase, Chromogranin A and Serotonin. In all samples histological analysis did not demonstrate inflammatory alterations. The neuroendocrine pattern was investigated. Results show numerous nerve fibers and ganglions around the muscle layers and within the submucosa and the lamina propria. Large neuroendocrine cell population shows immunohistochemical sta

Of 100 consecutive, adult, hospitalized inpatients with acquired unilateral oculosympathetic palsy, in 63 the central neuron was involved-usually due to strokes; in 21, tumor or trauma affected the preganglionic neuron; and in 13, postganglionic damage was sustained from a variety of causes. The preponderance of first neuron involvement by stroke is in part a reflection of patient sampling, but emphasizes the fact that central causes of Horner's syndrome are common.

Microneurography is a method using metal microelectrodes to investigate directly identified neural traffic in myelinated as well as unmyelinated efferent and afferent nerves leading to and coming from muscle and skin in human peripheral nerves in situ. The present paper reviews how this technique has been used in clinical neurophysiology to elucidate the neural mechanisms of autonomic regulation, motor control and sensory functions in humans under physiological and pathological conditions. Microneurography is particularly important to investigate efferent and afferent neural traffic in unmyeli

The authors relate the data on vegetative sweating fibers studied by the method of evoked skin sympathetic potentials in patients with diabetes mellitus, Charcot-Marie atrophy, spinal amyotrophy, Guillain-Barre syndrome, essential hyperhidrosis, and in those with Raynaud's phenomenon and thyrotoxicosis. A remarkable decrease of conduction by sweating fibers was revealed in patients with diabetes mellitus, Charcot-Marie atrophy and Raynaud's phenomenon; a moderate decrease was shown by the patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome and by those with spinal amyotrophy. The conclusion is made about th

Femoral blood flow was measured electromagnetically in chloralose-anaesthetised dogs pretreated with atropine and pancuronium, during preganglionic stimulation of the ipsilateral lumbar sympathetic chain. Circulation to the paw pads was occluded with a ligature. Trains of 10 stimuli at frequencies of 4 or 40 Hz elicited vasoconstrictor responses, the recovery phases of which were prolonged during temporary occlusion of the circulation to the leg below the knee, and shortened in the presence of low doses of the ganglion blocking drug hexamethonium (0.5-3 mg/kg i.v.). The Ca2+ entry blockers diltiazem, nifedipine and verapamil produced dose-dependent increases in atrioventricular conduction time (A-H interval), while decreasing heart rate and mean arterial pressure in anesthetized dogs previously subjected to ganglionic blockade to prevent hypotension-induced reflex changes in sympathetic tone. Nifedipine and verapamil, but not diltiazem, also reduced (P less than 0.05) the tachycardia produced by electrical stimulation of the cardioaccelerator nerve at doses which did not alter the heart rate response to direct beta-adrenoceptor stimulation by isoprotereno

We measured distal sympathetic and vagal function in 73 consecutive patients with diabetic neuropathy seen at the Mayo Autonomic Reflex Laboratory. Postganglionic sympathetic failure measured proximally within the foot occurred as commonly as vagal failure (58% and 55%, respectively) and occurred much more frequently than did orthostatic hypotension (26%). Either vagal or distal sympathetic abnormalities occurred in isolation in about one in six patients with diabetic neuropathy. We conclude that distal sympathetic failure and vagal failure occur with equal frequency when sensitive and quantit

Chronic administration of guanethidine to adult rats induces a selective autoimmune adrenergic neuropathy. Physiological and biochemical features of this disorder in the peripheral nervous system were explored in young adult Sprague-Dawley rats given daily intraperitoneal guanethidine monosulfate for 5 weeks. Control rats received daily saline injections. The guanethidine-treated animals gained less weight, had ptosis, and had a lower mean arterial blood pressure in the supine and upright tilted positions. Norepinephrine was depleted in the peroneal, sural, tibial, and vagal nerves, the nutrie
